GENERAL SAFETY AND APPLICATION NOTES

These instructions for use contain important notes for proper practical use. These notes must be understood before use and be adhered to during use. The reseller must provide this document in the language spoken in the country of use and it must be kept together with the equipment during the entire service life. However, mere reading of the instructions for use cannot replace the experience, responsible action, and knowledge required for mountaineering, climbing, and working at height or depth; and it cannot free users from bearing their risk.

The product must be used exclusively by trained, experienced persons or after direct instruction and direct supervision by trained and experienced persons. The product must be used exclusively in connection with CE-marked components of personal protective equipment offering protection against falls. If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safety. The person using the equipment or supervising users is responsible for ensuring the compatibility of the components and anchorage points. Poor physical and/or mental health can jeopardize safety under normal conditions and in emergencies. Mountaineering, climbing, and working at a height or depth often entail hidden risks and hazards from external influences. Errors and carelessness may cause severe accidents, injuries, and even death.

The equipment must not be altered in any way not expressly recommended by the manufacturer in writing. The ready-for-use condition and proper function of the equipment must be checked and ensured before and after each use. If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately. In case of abuse and/or improper use, the manufacturer refuses any liability. The responsibility and risks lie with the users or persons responsible for the operation. It is recommended to additionally observe the national rules for the application of the product. Attention: Failure to observe these instructions for use may lead to severe injury or even death!

PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION, FIGURE CAPTIONS

The braking action generated by the device depends on the diameter of the rope, the karabiner used, the condition of the rope, humidity, and other factors (rain, temperature, weight of the person being secured, etc.). Familiarize yourself with these conditions before each use.

  1. Designations of parts: A – top-rope climber eye, B – eye for a top-rope climber, C – rope channel, D – thumb loop, E – wire loop (Attention: Not intended for any type of load). Compatibility: Approved diameter ranges for different rope types. Attention: The use of thin ropes requires increased vigilance and extensive practical experience in belaying techniques.

  2. A partner check must be performed before each operation to avoid dangerous errors during the use of the equipment. The belaying person should wear gloves. A knot should also be tied at the end of the belaying rope.

  3. Operation in lead climbing/top-rope climbing with belaying.

    • 3a Correct insertion of the rope and approved karabiner shapes for the brake karabiner. A gate-lock karabiner must be used.
    • 3b If a single rope is used for belaying, it should be inserted into the rope channel on the side of the brake karabiner that is farther away from the karabiner gate.
    • 3c Correct use for dealing out of rope. The device may only be tilted up for pulling out the rope; otherwise, it must be tilted downward to the parking position. Alternatively, the thumb can simply be removed from the thumb loop.
    • 3d Correct use for pulling in of rope. Ensure smooth movement ensuring that the braking hand with the brake rope is again held below the device level as soon as possible.
    • 3e Correct use for lowering.
    • 3f Faulty handling during belaying. The brake hand must never release the braking rope and must always be held below the device level to ensure full braking performance.
  4. Operation for belaying a top-rope climber. This variant is allowed only for the belaying of a top-rope climber with two ropes.

    • 4a Correct insertion of the rope. Ensure that the ropes only run across the areas of the karabiner marked, depending on its shape.
    • 4b If two top-rope climbers are belayed at the same time with this variant, or if only one single rope is used, especially with thin ropes the incoming and outgoing rope ends may twist inside the rope channel and thus cancel out the braking function.
  5. Operation for belaying one or more top-rope climbers. This variant is allowed only for the belaying of one or more top-rope climbers with any roping technique.

    • 5a Correct insertion of the rope. Ensure that the ropes only run across the areas of the karabiner marked, depending on its shape.
  6. Faulty setups of the unit for additional belaying of one or more top-rope climbers. Attention: These faults may lead to fatal accidents.

  7. Operation for lowering of one or more top-rope climbers.

    • 7a Option 1: As shown in the illustration, the brake karabiner can be deactivated.
      Attention: The brake line ends must be secured through redundant belaying. Lowering may then be done via the redundant belaying equipment.

    • 7b Option 2: An additional karabiner can be attached to the respective eye (B) and the device may then be tilted.

  8. Operation when belaying a lead climber in multiple rope-length courses.

    • 8a The belaying rope must always be attached to at least one intermediate anchor point between the lead climber and the belayer.
    • 8b Caution when belaying a lead climber with the half-rope technique. When the ropes are thin and/or the lead climber is heavy and/or the belay runs through a few intermediate anchor points, it may be very difficult to hold a fall. Only trained and experienced belayers may use this variant. Suitable measures compensating for the factors mentioned may have to be taken.
    • 8c Incorrect and correct installation for belaying a lead climber ascending from the belaying station.
  9. Operation for abseiling.

    • 9a Installation options with different brake force stages. The use of a Prusik knot as a backup system is recommended in any case.

MAINTENANCE, STORAGE, AND TRANSPORT

  • 10. Correct storage and transport
  • 11. Maintenance Commercial disinfectants based on alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if necessary.

SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT

  • 12. Maximum service life: Corresponds to the time from the date of manufacture to the discard state. Products made of synthetic fibers (Polyamide, Polyester, Dyneema®, Aramid, Vectran®) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic conditions they are exposed to.
  • 13. Maximum useful life providing proper use and no detectable signs of wear showing as well as under optimum storage conditions. The useful life of the product corresponds to the time from first use to discard state and mainly depends on the type and frequency of use as well as external influences. At the end of the useful life or latest at the end of the maximum service life, the product must be removed from use.

Frequent use or extremely high load may substantially reduce the service life. Therefore, before every use, check the device for possible damage and correct function. If any of the following points apply, immediately remove the product from use and turn it over to an adequately qualified person or the manufacturer for inspection and/or repair (we do not claim this list is complete):

  • if there are doubts concerning safe use;
  • if sharp edges have the potential to damage the rope or hurt the user;
  • if signs of damage are visible (e. g. fissures, plastic deformation);
  • if the material shows signs of strong corrosion or if it has come in contact with chemicals;
  • if sharp edges are located on the metal parts;
  • if the abrasion is extensive on metal parts, i.e., loss of material;
  • if a hard fall load has occurred;

INSPECTION AND DOCUMENTATION

  • 14. In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly, at least once a year, by the manufacturer, an adequately qualified person, or an approved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or removed from use. The legibility of the markings must be checked. Such inspections and services must be documented for each product. The following information must be recorded: product identification and name, manufacturer’s name and contact details, unique identification, date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use, date of next regular inspection, result of the inspection, and signature of the qualified person responsible.
