The current version of the manual
For your own safety and in order to ensure the correct application of our products, please check regularly whether a newer version of this document is already available. The issue date of your document is printed on the bottom right of the back page. You can view and download the current document and more instructions under www.rehau.com/ti.

Intended use

The RE.GUARD water control is only allowed to be installed and operated as described in the technical documentation „RE.GUARD water control“ (no. 410600). Observance of these instructions is part of the intended use.
Installation and maintenance are only allowed to be carried out by suitable and trained specialist personnel. These personnel are authorized and enabled by training and experience as well as instruction to carry out the corresponding installation work, to recognize and avoid possible dangers, and to observe the relevant applicable regulations (e.g. regulations on work safety, electrical safety, etc.)

Safety warnings

Ignoring the instructions can cause injury or property damage.
No liability is accepted for damage caused by nonobservance of the instructions. If you do not understand the safety warnings or individual instruction steps or find them unclear, please contact REHAU (see inside back cover).

Prevention of accidents
Observe the applicable national and international routing, installation, accident prevention, and safety regulations and the instructions in this document when installing piping systems and components of the drinking water installation.
Laws, standards and regulations
Observe the applicable laws, standards, guidelines, regulations (e.g. DIN, EN, ISO, DVGW, NEN, VDE, and VDI) as well as regulations on environmental protection, regulations of the trade associations and regulations of the local supply companies. The installation of the RE.GUARD water control system is a major change in the drinking water installation and, according to most national regulations, may only be carried out by an installation company registered in an installer register of a water supply company. Please check these national regulations before installation.

Electrical safety

Risk of death due to electric shock

In older buildings, check whether the metallic water pipe is used as earthing for the electrical installation. A domestic water meter bridged with cable would be a clear indication of this. Ensure alternative grounding before disconnecting the pipeline. Work on electrical equipment is only allowed to be performed by authorised and qualified electricians. Unauthorized and improper work can result in fatal electric shock.
Transport and storage
Store RE.GUARD water control in closed packaging and only remove it immediately prior to installation. Do not expose the device to frost or heating above 50 °C during transport and storage.

Installation

Installation is not permitted in

  • Hot water pipes
  • Circulation pipes
  • Nondrinking water pipes

Danger of crushing
The device has an electrically operated shutoff. Never insert objects or body parts into the pipe openings when voltage is present through the power supply unit or the emergency power batteries are inserted.

Malfunction possible due to the incorrect installation position
“Overhead” installation, i.e. installation with the display facing downwards, is not permitted. The following prerequisites must be met:

  • The mains pressure must not exceed 1,0 MPa (10 bar). In the event of a higher mains pressure, the RE.GUARD water control must only be installed after a pressure reducer set to a maximum of 1,0 MPa (10 bar).
  • If drinking water consumers are installed in the building it must not be shut off by the RE.GUARD water control system, their supply lines must be branched off beforehand. These could be:
  • the building which must not be shut off by the RE.GUARD water control system, their supply lines must be branched off beforehand. These could be:
  • Any type of extinguishing water system, e.g. wall hydrant for independent fire fighting, burnback protection for solid fuel boilers, sprinkler system
  • Any type of emergency cooling device such as a thermal discharge safety device
  • Any type of makeup device for relevant systems which, if they cease to function, would cause more damage than leaking water, e.g. the cooling system of a server room or the heating system for a greenhouse

Install the device correctly according to the flow direction (observe the flow direction arrows on the device). For the reliable detection of leakage events, in particular for the detection of micro leaks, it is necessary for all installed nonreturn valves (after the domestic water meter, after the branch for water provision, at the withdrawal fittings) to work correctly. Ensure their function by regular maintenance. Before installing the RE.GUARD water control, check that the drinking water installation has sufficient dimensions. If agents are added to drinking water (e.g. for hardness stabilization) or if softening or demineralization measures are taken, please contact REHAU. The RE.GUARD water control should preferably be installed immediately after the installation section of the domestic water meter in the drinking water installation, i.e. directly after the shutoff device with backflow preventer, directly after the water meter. Basically, no inlet section is required for the installation of the RE.GUARD water control directly after the water meter or other straight fitting. For installation directly after a deflection (e.g. 90° bend/angle), an inlet section of approx. 5 x DN is recommended in order to improve the measurement result for flow and pressure. For operation and maintenance above the RE.GUARD display, maintain a clearance of at least 20 cm so that the upper part can be removed without risk of damage. In the shell construction phase, the RE.GUARD water control can be replaced by a water meter fitting of length 190 mm with threaded connections G1“ male thread (to be procured on-site). Only use suitable flat gaskets suitable for drinking water. Do not use the housing or other parts of the RE.GUARD water control as counter holds when tightening threaded connections. After installation, flush the drinking water installation in accordance with national regulations and check all newly made threaded connections for leaks. If leak detection agents are used, the manufacturer of the agent must be consulted in advance as to the extent to which the materials of the RE.GUARD water control can be influenced. Only use leak detectors suitable for drinking water.

Electrical connection

Risk of death due to electric shock
During installation, water leakage may occur and this can result in a short circuit or electric shock. The socket-outlet and electrical appliances must not be located directly next to or below the RE.GUARD water control unit. A suitable power supply unit is included with the device for transforming from 110 to 230 V alternating current. Only this power supply is allowed to be used to connect the RE.GUARD water control unit. In the event of a defect in the power supply unit, a spare part is available which can be purchased separately. The RE.GUARD water control itself is operated with a safety extralow voltage of 12 V direct current. REHAU recommends that the RE.GUARD water control should be protected on a circuit with overvoltage protection to which, for example, a frequently used power consumer is connected (e.g. light). This allows the lack of mains current for the RE.GUARD water control to be detected more quickly when this circuit fuse is tripped. A free socket for Euro plug type C is required for a safe power connection. The total length of the cable from the power supply unit to the RE.GUARD is approx. 1.25 m and must not be extended or shortened. Avoid mechanical stresses on this cable. In order to increase the reliability of leakage detection, REHAU recommends inserting emergency power batteries.

Commissioning
After the RE.GUARD water control has been installed and the mains plug connected, the device performs a selftest and is ready for operation after a few seconds. From this point on, a leakage protection function for pipe bursts and droplet leaks is already available, but only within the preset factory settings. REHAU strongly recommends that the steps described in the technical documentation “RE. GUARD Water Control”, chapter “4 Operation” should be carried out – especially for operation via a smartphone app – and that all settings should be adapted to the specific building. This is the only way to ensure the best possible protection of the building against water damage.
