General Information
Thank you for choosing a Petermann product.
Please read the user manual carefully before using the product for the first
time!
The current understanding in modern occupational health and safety is that
people in nursing professions experience significant work-related physical
strain. Back injuries are common. There are many situations in which a patient
has to be transferred from a bed, a wheeled stretcher, ambulance stretcher, an
X-Ray table or a wheelchair to a different stretcher or seat. The strain on
the user and the patient / care-dependent can be reduced significantly through
the use of sliding mats.
The use of transfer aids should be conditional upon the user having learned to
use the equipment properly. The user has to decide for themselves what
equipment is suitable to the patient’s situation and the intended sequence of
movements.
The Sliding Mat Wheelchair is part of a product line which is used
specifically to aid in raising patients who have slid forward in the
wheelchair in home care settings, hospitals and other health care facilities.
The product may only be used for the specified purpose and under the specified
conditions. The Sliding Mats Wheelchair are a safe transfer aid, which allows
for a setup transfer which is pleasant and comfortable for the patient as well
as being simple and back-friendly for the users.
The information in this user manual is for the patient who is being
transferred and moved, as well as the user performing the transfer / position
change.

3.6 Application
The Support Belt Merlin consists of a padded inner belt with front-facing
buckle.
The Support Belt Merlin is continuously adjustable
➢ for girths of 70 – 160 cm
➢ the belt widens from 10 cm to 20 cm at the back,
➢ three horizontal handles are located on the belt.
The outer belt is equipped with four double handle loops per side. These can
be used both as pulling loops and as attachment loops. The loop closest to the
body on the outer belt can, if necessary, be used to attach a loop belt as
additional belt.
The Support Belt Merlin serves to assist the patient during the transfer or
respectively when transferring a patient to a wheelchair, toilet or a chair.
The user has very good control of the motion sequence and unstable and
insecure patients can be held safely. Anxious patients are given a sense of
safety.
Application
The Support Belt Merlin is placed around the hips of the patient and closed
with a size adjustable quick fastener.
3.6.1 Application of the Transfer Aid Merlin
The Transfer Aid Merlin PMM-1100 with the Support Belt Merlin (Set Item-
No.: PMM-1000) is used primarily for people who can no longer get up on their
own but still have sufficient muscle tone.
Use of the Support Belt is limited in patients with contracture of the legs.
➢ Position the patient’s feet on the base plate.
➢ Adjust the leg cushion to the correct height – upper edge approx. three
finger widths below the patella.
➢ The lower legs must be within the supports, otherwise safe use is
impossible!
➢ Determine the grasping height on the device – approx. shoulder height of the
upright sitting patient.
➢ The handle positioning allows for four different grasping heights.
➢ The lower the grasping height, the less force the patient can apply with
their arms.
➢ Ensure that the patient positions their hands correctly!
➢ The palms must face down while grasping, otherwise opposing movements
result.
➢ The patient pulls the device towards them.
➢ This brings the patient’s lower legs into an optimal position for standing
up.
➢ Place the Support Belt Merlin around the sitting patient’s waist.
➢ Close the inner part of the belt and pull it tight.
➢ Lay the outer belt onto the patient’s legs.
➢ Fasten the looped belt (PM-3010) if necessary. (see point 3.7)
➢ Once this position has been achieved, engage the two brakes on the Transfer
Aid Merlin (see 3.6.3).
➢ The assistant stands before the Transfer Aid Merlin.
➢ The assistant grasps the two outer belts of the Support Belt Merlin.
➢ The assistant places one foot on the inclined surface of the Support Belt
Merlin base plate.
➢ The assistant shifts their weight back and pulls the Support Belt towards
them.
➢ It is also possible to provide assistance from the side.
➢ Grasp the rear handle of the Support Belt Merlin with one hand.
➢ Use the other hand to generate opposing pressure from the upper handle on
the device.
➢ The patient’s movement is supported as they stand up.
➢ Hook the inner loops of the Support Belt Merlin onto the side hooks of the
Transfer Aid Merlin in the required position.
➢ Select the shortest possible belt adjustment for the transfer.
➢ Secure the standing patient with their pelvis as close as possible to the
device.
➢ Release the brakes
➢ Now the transfer aid can easily be pulled or pushed to a different location.
3.6.2 Assistance during sitting
➢ Push the Transfer Aid Merlin directly in front of the destination.
➢ Keep the distance between the patient’s calves and the destination low.
➢ Engage the brakes on the Transfer Aid Merlin.
➢ Bring the patient to the highest standing position by providing supporting
pressure in the lower back area.
➢ There is no tension on the loops of the Support Belt Merlin.
➢ If the belt slipping up is a concern, then the looped belt (PM-3010) must be
tightened.
➢ The assistant stands beside the patient.
➢ Unhook the loops of the Support Belt Merlin from the hooks, starting with
the outer loop.
➢ Support the patient in the standing position and during sitting.
➢ The belt is removed once the patient is sitting safely.
➢ Roll the Transfer Aid Merlin back about one foot.
➢ Engage the brakes
