Introduction
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to observe
and contribute to positive environmental work practices.
The skills and knowledge described in this unit underpin a broad range of
activities applicable to a variety of job roles throughout industries at
various levels.
This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision and
exercise limited autonomy with some accountability for own work.
No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known
to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Task 1: Written Assessment
Instructions for this task:
Answer all questions in the space provided.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- effects of wind and rain on wind chill
- effects of wind shear and wind chill exposure
- enterprise and industry policies for monitoring weather and climate conditions, and recording and reporting weather and climate conditions
- weather and climate conditions impact upon farming and grazing activities
- effects of wind chill on metabolism of animals
- effects of prolonged dry periods on pastures and animal production, and natural resources
- effects of extreme heat on animals, including during birthing, and effects of heat stress on neonates
- work health and safety requirements and practices, especially as they relate to weather and climate monitoring and preparations for hazardous weather
- sustainability practices in the context of own

You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Meteorology| Also called air pressure or barometric pressure; the pressure
asserted by the mass of the column of air directly above a specified point of
location.
Nimbus or Nimbo-| Strong winds concentrated within a narrow band.
Stratus| Amount of water vapour in the atmosphere.
Weather front| Heaped, piled or puffy shaped clouds
Wind| Clouds that are high in altitude
Normal| Overall increase in the Earth’s surface temperature which changes
global
climate pattern.
Anomaly| Curl, fringe, wispy shaped clouds

Assessment Task 2: Case Study – monitoring physical signs of weather
Student Instructions:
You are to prepare a report for the Farm Owners on the physical signs of
weather, the monitoring of the weather and possible preventative actions.
Read the scenario below, highlight important aspects and then read the tasks
you need to complete.
Your report can be in any format but must include all aspects of the task
presented below and relevant to the scenario provided. You need to present
your report to your class. The presentation should be no more than 10 minutes.

Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing.
Complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for assessment by the due
date. The report must be word processed and it would be expected to be at
least 4 pages.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Clarify work instructions with supervisor
- Select and use tools and equipment and carry out pre-operational safety checks
- Select and use personal protective equipment
- Identify hazards and inform supervisor
- Identify and action work health and safety policies and procedures and legislative requirements
- Check weather and climate information to determine likely conditions
- Recognise changed weather and climate situations
- Anticipate likely impact of changes in weather and climate in respect to work tasks, safety of others, property, natural resources and local environment
- Report anticipated impact of weather and climate to supervisor
- Disseminate information and advice to relevant personnel
Benchmark
Students are to achieve at least a rating of 100% against each part of the
task to be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must demonstrate that you are
able to prepare for the monitoring of the weather; and check the weather and
climate information whilst monitoring the weather.
All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry
standards specified in thisunit.

Assessment Task 3: Case Study – Preventative actions
Student Instructions:
You are to create a list of preventative actions from the recommendations in
the Report presented in Assessment Task 2. This needs to be word processed.
Submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the
Assessment Cover Sheet.
Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing.
Complete all tasks as stated.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Determine the preventative action required according to known effects of livestock, crops and work tasks
- Implement actions to minimise loss and damage
- Adjust livestock, horticultural or crop management program or schedule of work tasks according to weather and climatic changes
- Access regular updates to determine ongoing suitability of current programs
- Review the viability of livestock, horticultural or crop management practices to ensure suitability within meteorological conditions
- Research forecasting techniques to maintain currency of information
- Document relevant information
Benchmark
You are to provide an action plan which demonstrates a sound understanding of
the recommendations and preventative actions required to protect the
activities on the farm. You must demonstrate that you are able to check
weather and climate information and carry out preventative actions to minimise
the impact of changing weathers.
You must complete all activities in full and you must answer all questions in
full.
All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry
standards specified in thisunit.
