14564 6-Piece Optics Cleaning Kit
For Proper Care and Preservation of Telescopes, Binoculars, and other
Precision Optics
Kit Includes:
- 2.5 oz. VariAir Compressed Air
- 1 oz. Multi-Coated Lens Cleaner
- 1 Ultra Brush Dust Remover
- 2 Booklets of Premium Lens Tissue
- 10 Cotton Swabs
For lenses, mirrors, filters and other fine optics to perform their best, they must be kept as clean as possible. The Orion Optics Cleaning Kit provides everything you need to keep optical surfaces sparkling without harming their sensitive coatings.
You should clean your optics if:
- You have touched the optical surface with your bare hands.
- You have spilled something on the optical surface.
- You see a “splotchy” pattern in an out-of-focus image of a bright light source.
- Your instrument does not provide the same high-quality images as it used to. (Telescope owners, be sure your collimation is accurate.)
Guidelines
If your instrument is still under warranty, consult the manufacturer before
disassembling any components to be sure it will not void the warranty.
Unless you live near the ocean or your environment contains an unusual amount
of dust, cleaning one to two times a year is probably sufficient. Dirty optics
perform better than poorly cleaned optics. Over-cleaning can destroy coatings.
Do not use cleaning fluid or tissues normally associated with eyeglasses.
These materials tend to cause “sleeking”, or microscopic scratching of
coatings and surfaces. Do not use isopropyl or “rubbing” alcohol. It contains
oil harmful to optics.
Procedure
- Using the compressed air (following directions on the can), blow on the optical surface to remove loose dust particles. The soft-bristle brush may also be used for dust removal.
- Moisten a folded piece of lens tissue with a few drops of lens cleaning fluid, then very gently wipe a small area of the optical surface.
- Use a dry sheet of tissue to gently dry off and polish the area you just moistened. Repeating steps 2 and 3 on a small area at a time ensures that your optics will be smudge-free. Continue until you have cleaned the entire surface.
