Inspection, points to verify

PETZL-M0002800H-DJINN-STEEL-Carabiner-fig-6

Petzl recommends a detailed inspection at least once every 12 months. Warning: your intensity of use may cause you to inspect your PPE more frequently. Record the results on your PPE inspection form: see examples at Petzl.com.

Before each use
Carabiners: verify there are no cracks, deformation or corrosion (on the frame, rivet and gate). Open the gate and verify that it closes itself automatically and completely when released. The Keylock hole must not be blocked or plugged.  Quick link: verify there are no cracks, deformation or corrosion (on the frame and thenut). Quickdraw sling: check the condition of the safety stitching (no cut, loose, or worn threads). Look for cuts, wear and damage due to use. Check the condition of the sling protection. Verify the connectors are properly assembled in the AXESS STRING sling.

During use
Verify that the carabiner is always loaded on the major axis. Make sure the rope is completely clipped into the carabiner, with the gate closed. Protect the quickdraw sling from sharp edges. It is important to regularly monitor the condition of the product and its connections to the other equipment in the system. Make sure that all items of equipment are correctly positioned with respect to each other.

Compatibility

Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system in your application (compatible = good functional interaction). The AXESS STRING sling is compatible only with the supplied protection. On the anchor end, it is preferable to use an EN 12275 class Q quick link.

Preparation

Warning: follow the directionality of installation as indicated for the AXESS STRING sling, the protection, and the connectors. When the assembly is done correctly, the quick link should be held loosely by the sling and the carabiner should be held tightly. Verify that the connectors are correctly assembled with the sling. Warning: risk of the connector not passing through the sling.

Carabiner positioning

PETZL-M0002800H-DJINN-STEEL-Carabiner-fig-8

A carabiner is not indestructible.
A carabiner is strongest when loaded on the major axis, with the gate closed. Loading a carabiner in any other way is dangerous.

A quick link is not indestructible.
A quick link is strongest when loaded on its recommended loading axis or axes, with the sleeve locked. Loading a quick link in any other way (e.g. on the minor axis) is dangerous and can reduce its strength.

Quickdraw positioning

PETZL-M0002800H-DJINN-STEEL-Carabiner-fig-9

A poorly positioned quickdraw or rope can cause unclipping.
A carabiner with wear from rope friction can have sharp edges that can damage your rope. A knot in a sling reduces its strength. Wet or frozen slings are more difficult to handle.
