Inspection, points to verify

  • Your safety is related to the integrity of your equipment.
  • Petzl recommends a detailed inspection at least once every 12 months. Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com. Record the results on your PPE inspection form.

Before each use

  • Before each use, check the general condition of your crampons.
  • Verify that the front and rear bindings and antibott system are in good condition and properly adjusted.
  • Verify that the adjustment tab and the linking bar are properly engaged.
  • Make sure there are no cracks in the body or the points, especially on the front points.

During use
During use, regularly verify that your crampons are properly tightened.

Compatibility

  • Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system in your application (compatible = good functional interaction).
  • Make sure that your boots are compatible with your crampons.
  • With the flexible linking bar, use only the FLEXLOCK binding system.
  • For flexible boots, choose the flexible linking bar: a rigid linking bar may create a risk of breaking the bar or crampon due to metal fatigue.
  • Always carry out a compatibility test before using your equipment in the field. Crampons may not always be adaptable to certain boots.

Fitting to your boots

Remember to adjust the crampons to your boots before use. Crampons are asymmetric; do not switch the right foot with the left foot.

  • A. Adjusting the front binding system
    • The front holes allow the system to be adjusted to the desired length for the front points (long or short).
    • Tip for unfastening the binding system: see drawing.
  • B. Size adjustment
    • Warning: not all linking bars are compatible with all crampon models.
    • Make the adjustments for one foot, then use the same setting for the other foot, using the letters or numbers on the tab.
  • C. Rear binding system adjustment
  • D. Strap adjustment
    • The strap fastening buckle must always be on the outside of the foot.
    • Be sure to keep enough strap length to be able to change from the FIL system to the FIL FLEX.
  • E. Compatibility test
    • Carry out a shaking or kicking test: the crampon must not move, even when forced in different directions.
    • If necessary, adjust the settings by repeating these steps. Carry out the test again. Warning: a poorly adjusted crampon can result in loss of the crampon.

Antibott system

  • Before mounting, completely disassemble the crampon.
  • Warning: even when using an antibott system, you must always beware of snow buildup under the crampons, which increases the risk of sliding and falling.
