SAFETY FIRST
If you are collecting the equipment for someone else please make sure this sheet is given to the equipment user to read. This sheet should be given to the site supervisor if the equipment is being hired for commercial use so that the information is available to all users.
Before starting any job, be sure to spend a few minutes planning and understanding the hazards and risks of the job. Do this by:
- Thinking about and observing your surroundings
- Running through the steps of the job in your mind
- Identifying the hazards, how you can get hurt and how you’ll prevent it
- Knowing what plant and equipment you need
- Only starting when you can do the job safely
- Ensuring you are trained or experienced for the task
- Communicating with everyone involved
Points to consider when planning a task. Can you:
- Come into contact with an energy source (e.g. heat, electricity, substance under pressure) or hazardous materials
- Be struck-by or against anything?
- Be caught-in, on or between anything?
- Slip, trip or fall on the same or too a lower level
- Strain or sprain a muscle?
- Cause damage to plant equipment or property?
- Spill or pollute something?
Pre-Start Checks and Safety
- Check for defects/damage to motor and the unit is clean
- Check for defects/damage to discharge flap
- Check the area of operation for hazards- Clear large stones and debris from around the stump area
- Check fuel tank is full
- During operation waste can travel at speed for 3 metres ensure other personnel are clear
Starting Procedure
- Before starting raise or lower the handle to suit the size of stump you are grinding
- Place in position with cutting blade near the stump
- Turn on petrol
- Cold start – choke engine
- Set throttle to 1/2 OPEN
- Ensure (Push-pull) switch is in the “ON” position
- Lock park brake
- Push down handle so that cutter wheel is off the ground
- Grip Operator Presence bar
- Pull start cord until a slight resistance is felt
- Give short sharp pulls until engine starts and cutting blade rotates
When Operating
- Place cutter wheel directly in front of stump
- Pull throttle full on
- sweep handle back and forth (left and right) allowing the cutter to grind the stump with each pass
- When needed unlock brake
- Push grinder further into stump
- Continue Grinding
Stopping and After Use
- While holding blade off the ground release the Operator presence bar. Wait until blade stops before lowering
- Make sure brake is set, turn engine switch to off
- Allow engine to cool for at least 5 minutes before moving to storage or transporting
Refuelling
- The stump grinder is fuelled by Petrol
- Allow engine to cool for at least 2 minutes before removing the fuel cap
- After fuelling wipe up any spills before attempting to restart
