Before starting any job, be sure to spend a few minutes planning and understanding the hazards and risks of the job. Do this by:

  • Thinking about and observing your surroundings
  • Running through the steps of the job in your mind
  • Identifying the hazards, how you can get hurt and how you’ll prevent it
  • Knowing what plant and equipment you need
  • Only starting when you can do the job safely
  • Ensuring you are trained or experienced for the task
  • Communicating with everyone involved

Points to consider when planning a task. Can you:

  • Come into contact with an energy source (e.g. heat, electricity, substance under pressure) or hazardous materials
  • Be struck-by or against anything? · Be caught-in, on or between anything?
  • Slip, trip or fall on the same or too a lower level

  • Ensure trailer is securely attached to suitable rated tow vehicle and all lights work
  • Ensure inlet table is up in the locked position
  • Ensure outlet chute is facing forwards, with clamp handle tightened

Pre-Start Checks and Safety

  • Check petrol and engine oil level · Check and adjust direction of outlet
chute and outlet deflector · Ensure the chipper is positioned on firm
level ground and remains attached to the tow vehicle · Ensure you inspect the material to be chipped to ensure it is free of flax and non-organic material: rocks, glass, wire, metal, etc. · Ensure you have no loose clothing or long hair that could get caught · Ensure the inlet chute and table is clear of material when starting the chipper · Ensure that bystanders are kept a safe distance away from hazards including outlet chute discharge, inlet chute, and noise

When Operating

  • Stand to the side of the inlet chute when feeding material into the machine to reduce the risk of being pulled in if you get caught by material
  • NEVER PLACE LIMBS INSIDE THE CHUTE OF THE MACHINE WHEN IN OPERATION
  • Restrict diameter size of logs to 6 inch / 160 mm
  • Should a blockage occur, stop the machine before clearing – NEVER TRY AND CLEAR A BLOCKAGE WHILST THE MACHINE IS RUNNING
