ECTIVE BM 50 Battery Monitor Instruction Manual

Overview

Battery monitors of the ECTIVE BM Series serve as high precision battery capacity testers, also known as coulometers. With your ECTIVE BM battery monitor, you can test the voltage, current and capacity of your battery. ECTIVE BM models have an integrated memory function as well as alarm functions for low voltage and low capacity. They are suitable for mobile and portable equipment such as e-bikes, cleaning machines, electronic instruments etc.
ECTIVE BM battery monitors are suitable for lithium batteries, lithium-iron- phosphate batteries, lead acid batteris as well as nickel-metal hybrid batteries with voltages between 10V and 120V. Please read this manual carefully before use.

Connection

To connect the ECTIVE BM battery monitor, you require one shielded wire and one ordinary wire (0.3 – 0.75mm²). Connect one end of the ordinary wire to the battery‘s positive terminal, the other end to any B+ connector of the shunt. Connect the
B- of the shunt to the B- terminal of the battery. Then, connect the P- terminal of the shunt to the P- connection of the output. Finally, connect the sampler to the battery monitor using the shielded wire.
Warning: Please strictly follow the appropriate connection diagram for your ECTIVE BM model. The shunt must be connected to the negative circuit. Never connect the shunt to the positive circuit. If you want to extend the shielded wire, you need to use 4 lines of the same specification.

Operating Instructions

  1. Checking the current: Connect the battery monitor according to the instructions above and power on the battery
The screen should now display the battery‘s voltage, current, capacity percentage and other information. If the screen remains blank, please check the connections. Charge or discharge the battery to make sure the information presented on the display is consistent with actual changes in current and capacity. If there are major differences between the actual values and the information shown on the display, please check the connections.

  2. Resetting the capacity: On first use, the capacity percentage presented on the display is not the actual value. In order to correct this, reset the capacity by following these steps: First, discharge the battery Then, press and hold the
button for three seconds to set the capacity to zero. Then fully charge the battery. Finally, press and hold the      button for three seconds to set the capacity to 100%. The battery monitor will now correctly track the battery‘s capacity. You will need
to repeat this step when connecting the battery monitor to a different battery.

  3. Checking and resetting the actual capacity: If you find that the capacity shown on the display doesn‘t match the battery‘s actual capacity during use, please follow these steps: Discharge the battery completely, then press and hold the button for three seconds to set the capacity to Then set the preset

  4. capacity the the highest value possible (please consult the section „Using the Interface“ for instructions). Charge the battery fully. Now the capacity value on the display corresponds to the actual capacity. Finally, set the display capacity as the preset capacity.

Additional Advice

  • When charging or discharging the battery, the battery monitor must be turned on. Otherwise, the displayed capacity will not be
  • When the load is connected, the display‘s backlight will light up if the current is higher than 100mA. The charge-discharge indicator points down to indicate that the battery is Furthermore, the display shows the discharge current and voltage in real-time. The displayed remaining time may fluctuate if there are major variations in the discharge current. Note: If

the display‘s backlight is flashing, the B- and P- connections are inverted.

  • When you break the connection to the load and connect the charger, the display‘s backlight will start flashing if the charging current is higher than 100mA. The charge-discharge indicator points upwards to indicate that the battery is being charged. Furthermore, the display shows the charging Note: If the display‘s backlight is continuously illuminated, the B- and P- connections are inverted.
  • When the charge or discharge current is below 60mA, the battery monitor will enter a low-power standby mode and the display‘s backlight will turn If you press any of the buttons, the display will light up for 10 seconds.
  • Due to the battery monitor‘s high sensitivity, in standby mode (there is no input or output current to or from the battery), any nearby electromagnetic radiation (open or closed inductive loads, such as a high-power motor) may cause the backlight to briefly turn
  • Frequent current variations may reduce the accuracy of values shown on the

Protect the battery monitor from long exposure to the sun or environments with high amounts of ultraviolet radiation, particularly in winter (< −20°C) and summer (>60°C). These environmental factors may reduce the life of the LCD screen.Using the Interface

Setting the preset capactity and voltage

  1. Press the „OK“ button for three seconds to enter the settings
  2. Press the or      buttons to cycle through the settings items:
  • CAP (preset capacity). A defaul capacity has been set at the Please set the correct capacity of your battery.
  • FULL U (full voltage): When the voltage is higher than this value, it will be displayed as 100%
  • ZERO U (zero voltage): When the voltage is lower than this value, it will be displayed as 0% and the display‘s backlight will turn off. If the battery continues to discharge, the display will start flashing and show an an alarm indicator, accompanied by an acousitic
  • Alarm: when the battery‘s capacity drops below this value, the disply will start flashing, accompanied by an acoustic

Note: For typical use cases, you don‘t need to change the FULL U and ZERO U values, which are set to a default of 0V. If you want to change these values, please first make sure you know the actual charge and discharge voltage of your battery.

  1. Select „CAP“ and press the „OK“ button to enter the preset capactity The selected item will flash. Press the „OK“ button to cycle through items. Use the and      buttons to increase or decrease the value. Finally, press the                           button to exit the preset capacity settings.
  2. You can change other settings the in the same way as the

preset capacity. Finally, press the  button to save the new values and exit the settings menu. Setting capacity to zero or to full:
Before first using the battery monitor or when connecting it to a different battery, the „zero“ and „full“ capacity values need to be reset. In the main menu, press and hold the        button for three seconds to set the „zero“ capacity value (be sure to fully discharge the connected battery first). Press and hold the
button for three seconds to set the „100%“ capacity value (be sure to fully charge the connected battery first). Note: These actions cannot be undone.
Using the battery monitor when in standby mode

  1. When the battery voltage is lower than the turn-off voltage value, the battery monitor will enter a low-power standby When you need to check the battery‘s capacity, simply press any button to activate the display for ten seconds. After the ten seconds, if the battery voltage is still below the turn-off value, the battery monitor will re-enter standby mode. If at any time the battery voltage rises over the turn-off value – or the battery starts charging or discharging – the battery monitor will exit standby mode and resume normal operation.
  2. If the battery has a high capacity and the turn-off voltage has been set correctly, the battery monitor can remain connected to the battery without an additional switch for a long
