This chapter provides basic information about the QNAP device.
About the TS-h3087XU-RP
The high-capacity TS-h3087XU-RP is powered by an Intel® Xeon® E-2378
processor, supports up to 128 GB DDR4 ECC memory, and provides an HDD/SSD
hybrid storage architecture that delivers reliable server-grade performance.
Running the ZFS-based QuTS hero operating system, the TS-h3087XU-RP supports
inline data deduplication, up to 65536 snapshots, real-time SnapSync, and QSAL
(QNAP SSD Antiwear Leveling)– providing a storage solution that meets business
requirements for file servers, virtualization servers, VDI, and
backup/restore.

Hardware Installation
This section provides information on installing or replacing drives, memory
modules, expansion cards, redundant power supply units, system fans, rail
kits, and expansion units.
Drive Installation
The TS-h3087XU-RP is compatible with 3.5-inch hard drives and 2.5-inch solid-
state drives. Installing 3.5-inch Drives on 3.5-inch Trays For the list of
compatible drive models, go to https://www.qnap.com/compatibility.
Warning · Installing a drive deletes all data on the drive. · Observe
electrostatic discharge (ESD) procedures to avoid damage to components.
1. Power off the NAS. 2. Remove the drive tray.
a. Slide the lock to the left. b. Push the button to release the tray handle.
c. Pull the tray out.

aligned with the holes on the sides of the tray.

Replacing Memory Modules
The NAS has four memory slots. You can increase the memory capacity of the NAS
by upgrading the memory modules. Use only QNAP memory modules to maintain
system performance and stability. For NAS devices with more than one memory
slot, use QNAP modules with identical specifications.
Important Ensure the following when replacing memory modules:
· When installing only one module, use slot 4. · When installing two modules,
use slots 2 and 4. Ensure that the modules are identical. · When installing
four modules, use slots 2 and 4 for the first pair, and slots 1 and 3 for
the second pair. Ensure that each pair uses identical modules. For details on
slot numbering, see System Board. Warning

outlet. 3. Disconnect all cables and external attachments. 4. Remove the case
cover.

a. Loosen the screws.
b. Slide the cover back. c. Lift the cover off the device.

5. Remove the 2.5-inch drive bay fan duct. a. Detach the 2.5-inch drive bay
fan duct from the back of the 2.5-inch drive bay enclosure.
b. Detach the 2.5-inch drive bay fan duct from the 2.5-inch drive bay fan
module.

c. Lift the 2.5-inch drive bay fan duct out of the device.
6. Optional: Remove an existing module. a. Push the retention clips outward
simultaneously to release the module. Warning Attempting to remove a module
that is not completely released may damage the module and the system board. b.
Hold the module by the edges.

7. Install a new module. a. Align the notch with the ridge in the slot. b.
Insert the module into the slot. c. Verify that the metal connectors are
completely inserted into the slot. d. Carefully press down on the module until
the retention clips lock the module into place.
8. Attach the 2.5-inch drive bay fan duct. a. Attach the 2.5-inch drive bay
fan duct to the back of the 2.5-inch drive bay enclosure.

b. Attach the 2.5-inch drive bay fan duct to the 2.5-inch drive bay fan module.
9. Attach the case cover. a. Place the cover on the device. b. Slide the cover forward.

10. Connect all cables and external attachments. 11. Connect the power cords
to the electrical outlet. 12. Power on the device. 13. Verify that the module
is recognized by the device.
a. Log on to QuTS hero as administrator. b. Go to Control Panel > System >
System Status > Hardware Information . c. Check the value for Total memory.

Installing Expansion Cards
The NAS supports selected expansion cards, some of which require QNAP PCIe
brackets. QNAP-branded expansion cards purchased from the company website are
shipped with the brackets necessary to fit all QNAP NAS models.

moving components. 1. Check the expansion cards and brackets supported by your
model on the QNAP website. a. Go to www.qnap.com/compatibility. b. Click
Search by NAS. c. Specify the number of bays and the specific model of your
NAS. d. Under Category, select the component or device type. e. Locate a
specific component or device model in the list. f. Optional: Click the
corresponding Note icon to view more information. 2. Power off the device. 3.
Disconnect the power cords from the electrical outlet. 4. Disconnect all
cables and external attachments. 5. Remove the case cover. a. Loosen the
screws.

b. Slide the cover back. c. Lift the cover off the device.
6. Remove the PCIe cover. a. Remove the screw that secures the cover to the
bracket. b. Pull the cover away from the slot.

7. Optional: Attach the QNAP bracket to the expansion card. a. Remove all
screws of the existing bracket.
b. Carefully pull the bracket away from the card. c. Attach the QNAP bracket
to the card using the same screws.

d. Verify that the bracket does not move. 8. Install the expansion card.
a. Hold the card by the edges. b. Insert the card into the slot. c. Attach the
screw.

Hot-swapping Redundant Power Supplies
NAS devices with redundant power supply units (PSUs) support hot-swapping.
Warning Electric shock hazard.

Tip By default, the NAS issues audio alerts and desktop notifications in case
of redundant PSU failures. Redundant PSU failures include when the NAS is
operating on a single healthy PSU only. In this case, if you want to stop
receiving redundant PSU failure alerts and notifications, go to Control Panel
System > Hardware > General and deselect Enable redundant power supply mode.
1. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet and the power supply unit (PSU) that you are replacing.
2. Firmly press the latch toward the handle and then pull the PSU out.
3. Insert the new PSU.
4. Connect the power cord to the PSU and the electrical outlet.

Replacing Fans
Tip This device has transparent plastic fan ducts pre-installed on some system
fans. These fan ducts help maintain ideal operating temperatures for
components. QNAP does not recommend operating this device without these fan
ducts installed. Warning

6. Remove the CPU fan duct. a. Remove the screws securing the CPU fan duct to
the system board.
b. Detach the bottom hooks of the CPU fan duct from the CPU heatsink screws.

c. Lift the CPU fan duct out of the device.
7. Remove the fan unit from the chassis. a. Remove the screws that secure the
fan unit to the chassis.

the system board.

The TS-h3087XU-RP uses the QNAP QuTS hero operating system. You can install
QuTS hero using any of the following methods. You can also install the QNAP
QTS operating system. If your NAS is connected to the internet, the option to
install QTS will appear in the Smart Installation Guide wizard using any of
the methods in the table. You can also manually download the QTS firmware from
https://download.qnap.com.
Warning QTS and QuTS hero use different file systems. Switching operating
systems will reset the NAS and delete all data.

Initializing QuTS hero Using Qfinder Pro
You can initialize QuTS hero using Qfinder Pro, which is an utility designed
to help you locate and manage QNAP devices on your network.
Warning Installing QuTS hero deletes all data on the drives. Back up your data
before proceeding.
1. Power on the device.
2. Connect the device to your local area network.
3. Run Qfinder Pro on a computer that is connected to the same local area
network.
Note To download Qfinder Pro, go to https://www.qnap.com/utilities.
4. Locate the NAS in the list and then double-click the name or IP address.
The Smart Installation Guide opens in the default web browser.
5. If the screen shows a different operating system, click QuTS hero.
Note This step is only required if the NAS supports installing more than one
operating system and the default operating system for installation is not QuTS
hero.
The NAS restarts and the smart installation screen shows QuTS hero as the
operating system to install.
6. Click Start Smart Installation Guide. The Install Firmware window appears.

brackets ({}), slash (), vertical bar (|), semicolon (;), colon (:),
apostrophe (‘), quotation mark (“), comma (,), less than sign (< ), greater
than sign (>), backslash (/), question mark (?), percent sign (%), dollar sign
($), and the space character.
Important To protect your NAS from brute force attacks, create a new system administrator account during QuTS hero initialization to disable the default “admin” account.
· Password: Specify an administrator password with 1 to 64 characters. The
password supports all ASCII characters.
9. Click Next.
10. Specify the time zone, date, and time.
Tip QNAP recommends connecting to an NTP server to ensure that the NAS follows the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) standard.
11. Click Next. The Configure the network settings screen appears.
12. Select Obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP).
13. Click Next.
14. Review the settings.
15. Click Apply. A confirmation message appears.

Warning Clicking Initialize deletes all data on the drive before installing

16. Click Initialize. QuTS hero initialization starts. It may take a few
minutes to complete the process. After the initialization, you can click Go to
NAS Management to start using QuTS hero and configuring other settings.
Initializing QuTS hero Using the Cloud Installation Website
You can initialize QuTS hero on the cloud installation website, which is
designed to help you set up QNAP devices.
Warning Initializing QuTS hero deletes all data on the drives. Back up your
data before proceeding.
1. Power on the device. 2. Connect the device to the internet. 3. Go to the
QNAP Cloud Installation website using one of the following methods:
· On your computer, go to the website dedicated to your region. · Global:

· Or scan the QR code on the NAS using a mobile device. The web page lists all
the uninitialized QNAP NAS devices on the local network. 4. Find your NAS from
the list and then click Initialize.
Tip If your NAS is connected to the Internet, you can also go to
https://install.qnap.com/set to enter the Cloud Key printed on the NAS. This
allows you to initialize the NAS even if your NAS and your computer are not on
the same network.
The installation wizard opens in the default web browser. 5. Create an account
or sign in to myQNAPcloud.
Note You must return to this page to complete the installation after creating
an account.
6. Specify the myQNAPcloud device name for the NAS.
Note · The myQNAPcloud device name is used when remotely accessing the NAS. ·
For security purposes, the myQNAPCloud Link remote connection service will be
disabled on your NAS after initialization. You can enable it by connecting to
QuTS hero through LAN and then installing myQNAPCloud Link.
7. Click Next. The Smart Installation Guide opens in the default web browser.

8. Perform any of the following actions.
· To check for the latest available version, click Start. The wizard downloads
the latest available version, and then the NAS restarts after the download is
complete. If a newer version is not available, the wizard automatically

· If the screen shows a different operating system, click QuTS hero. The NAS
restarts and the smart installation screen shows QuTS hero as the operating
system to install.

4. NAS Migration
You can migrate data and settings from your current NAS to another NAS model
with minimal disruptions by installing all the hard drives from the source NAS
to the destination NAS. RAID configuration and other settings are retained on
the destination NAS after migration.
NAS Migration Requirements
You can only migrate drives and system settings to specific NAS models,
depending on your source NAS. For the list of NAS models compatible with
direct NAS migration, see https://www.qnap.com/en/nas-migration.
Your device must meet the following requirements:
· The destination NAS must run on the same QuTS hero version as the source NAS
(or later).
Important Due to incompatibilities in file system, system migration between
QTS NAS and QuTS hero NAS is not supported.
Warning Migrating drives between QTS NAS and QuTS hero NAS can cause data
corruption.
· The destination NAS must have sufficient free drive bays to accommodate all
the drives that you are migrating from the source NAS.

virtual settings may change and require reconfiguration: port trunking,

Warning To prevent losing all your software licenses, QNAP recommends
deactivating licenses on the source NAS before data migration.
If the destination NAS has less RAM than the source NAS, the following
features and applications might not function: Virtualization Station, Qsirch,

Only services supported by the destination NAS are available.
Some multimedia features are disabled by default.

Forcing Qfinder Pro or myQNAPcloud to Locate the NAS
If Qfinder Pro or myQNAPcloud is unable to locate the NAS during QuTS hero
installation, the drives or data may be faulty.
1. Power off the NAS. 2. Remove all drives. 3. Power on the NAS. 4. Locate
the NAS using Qfinder Pro or myQNAPcloud. 5. Reinsert the drives. 6. Continue

Recovering Unintentionally Removed Healthy Drives
The NAS supports exclusive RAID recovery technology to recover failed RAID
groups from unintentional disconnection or removal of drives. Users can
recover an inactive RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, RAID 50, RAID 60, triple
mirror, and RAID-TP group from degraded mode.
