The current understanding in modern occupational health and safety is that people in nursing professions experience significant work-related physical strain. Back injuries are common. There are many situations in which a patient has to be transferred from a bed, a wheeled stretcher, ambulance stretcher, an X-Ray table or a wheelchair to a different stretcher or seat. The strain on the user and the patient / care-dependent can be reduced significantly through the use of sliding mats.

The use of transfer aids should be conditional upon the user having learned to use the equipment properly. The user has to decide for themselves what equipment is suitable to the patient’s situation and the intended sequence of movements.

The inner surface of all Turn Sheets with handles is made from particularly low friction fabric, which allows for easy movement. The outer surfaces consist of a breathable cotton material, which can remain under the patient. The Turn Sheets with handles have soft padding between the surfaces so that the patient can lie or sit comfortably.

The Turn Sheet with handles is part of a product line which is used specifically to aid in the transfer of patients in home care and other health care facilities, as well as in hospitals. The product may only be used for the specified purpose and under the specified conditions. The Turn Sheet with handles is a safe transfer aid, which allows for a transfer which is pleasant and comfortable for the patient as well as being simple and back-friendly for the users. The information in this user manual is for the patient who is being transferred and moved, as well as the user performing the transfer / position change. Service life / lifecycle
If the product is used in accordance with the safety instructions, then the expected product service life is five years. However, the effective service life may vary depending on the frequency and intensity of use and the number of washing and disinfection cycles.
Perform regular function checks on the product and be sure to observe the safety information (see item 2).

Safety information

WARNING indicates a potential danger which could lead to personal injury or material damage.

• It is the responsibility of the organisation / the user to determine, on the basis of the circumstances (weight / health condition of the patient) and the capabilities of the user, whether several users may be required for the transfer and/or whether additional safety measures are required.
• Defective products may no longer be used.
• The smooth surfaces significantly reduce resistance due to friction during repositioning. Check the transfer surfaces carefully to ensure they are fixed in place securely (e.g. wheelchair, bed).
• Ensure that the transfers are performed by the users in a back-friendly manner.
• In case of direct skin contact, observation of changes in skin appearance is indicated.
• Weight limits must be observed (200 kg).
• Transfer products are subject to a natural ageing process. Inspect the equipment regularly to ensure proper functionality.
• The use of non-standard cleaning agents or bleaching agents, alcohols, fabric softeners or other chemical laundry additives may lead to permanent deterioration of the sliding mat properties.

Transfer products are also subject to a natural ageing process. Inspect the equipment regularly and carefully, in particular before each use. Ensure that the product is in sound condition and that the material and the seams are not damaged. Check the product functionality by applying pressure to the handles and ensure that the material withstands the load. The smooth surface of the special sliding material allows for easy sliding and moving. Check these properties – ideally in comparison to a new product.

• Defective products may no longer be used!

Using the product

Indication and further use
Due to the wide range of possible applications, the indications cannot be tied to a specific clinical picture, since Turn Sheets with handles are suitable for all applications involving people who require assistance. Thanks to the reduced frictional resistance, the capabilities of the patient can be put to use when Turn Sheets with handles are used. The effort required on the part of the user is reduced. The product can be used in supoport of the following diagnoses.

• For poor skin condition
• For large area wounds
• With decubitus
• For patients with an increased risk of bleeding due to skin contact
• For micro position changes
• For individually felt pain
• To the transfer of overweight patients
• As an option for recumbent transfer from bed to an adaptive wheelchair
• For mobilisation and positioning of a patient in bed according to indications
• For patients with elevated or reduced muscle tone
• For patients unable to move on their own
• Can be used with minimal independent patient mobility (e.g. ALS or MS)
• To reduce shear and friction forces
• Application in palliative settings
• A combination of pressure relieving mattresses, pain treatment systems or alternating pressure mattresses is possible in specific configurations after testing.

This product may be reused. Before reusing the product, be sure to perform a thorough function check (see item 2.2) as well as cleaning or disinfection of the product. (see item 5)

Contraindications
Contraindications cannot be tied to a specific clinical picture. Under consideration of the safety information (see item 2), the product may not be used if the patient has any of the following conditions:

• Independent/active patients

Application risks

• Patients are miscalculatet → risk of falling
• The product is embedded incorrectly → risk of falling

Application
Using the Turn Sheet with handles doesn’t involve any prescribed care techniques or methods, it is based on the individual circumstances. Moving and lateral repositioning of patients is made much easier. The Turn Sheet with handles can be secured at the head of the bed or on the sides using the included fastening straps. Transfers and positioning of the patient are performed the same way as for the aforementioned applications. The Turn Sheet with handles can remain in the bed permanently. The Turn Sheet with handles is very versatile. Depending on the type of restriction, weight and sensitivity to pain we recommend using it as a complete set PM-1695. The sliding surface of the fitted sheet is finished with extremely low-friction sliding material. The fact that the sliding surfaces of the top sheet and the Turn Sheet with handles lie against one another maximises the reduction of friction forces, producing the same effects as a sliding mat. An anti-slip safety strip is sewn into the sliding surface of the fitted sheet on both sides. The safety strips prevent the top sheet from sliding off in an uncontrolled manner under load and facilitates all transfers in and out of the bed. Placing the anti-slip mat between the Turn Sheet with handles and the Fitted Sheet reduces slippage in this area. The Bed Wedges were developed for active and corrective positioning of patients. Their versatility allows for goal-oriented and purposeful positioning in accordance with the planned care measures. (also refer to the Bed Wedges user manual).

Applications: Turn Sheet with handles as set PM-1695

When using the Turn Sheet with handles in combination with the Turn Sheet Fitted Sheet, Anti-Slip Mat and a 3-piece Bed Wedge set (item no.: PM-1699), the following parts are used:

• Turn Sheet with handles 3 belt loops at the head end and 12 hidden handle loops
• Fitted sheet with sliding surface and anti-slip safety strip
• Anti-Slip mat to aid with supporting and positioning
• Bed Wedges for positioning the patient

Preparation

• Fit the Turn Sheet Fitted Sheet onto the mattress like a fitted bed sheet.
• Tighten it on the sides using the pull cords.
• Place the Turn Sheet with handles directly onto the fitted sheet.
• Place the bed sheet and incontinence sheet on the Turn Sheet with handles as needed.

Transfer

• With the Turn Sheet with handles, the patient can be pulled in all directions as well as being pushed.
• The movements can be adjusted according to the respective clinical picture. They should always be performed gently and in small steps.
• To pull, grasp the pad beside the patient’s centre of gravity; Then the user can pull the patient towards themselves by shifting their centre of gravity.
• To push, place the hands flat under the patient’s centre of gravity; The patient can be pushed by shifting one’s weight and applying pressure.
• Please ensure that the pad is pushed, and not the patient!
• To pull the patient up, pulling the Turn Sheet with handles up towards the head of the bed is recommended. If this isn’t possible, then the Turn Sheet with handles can be pushed up diagonally from the side.
• The Turn Sheet with handles can be secured on the head end using the supplied straps.
• Patients with some mobility can also actively support their movements with the aid of the pad.
• Furthermore, movement approaches are physiologically supported by the Turn Sheet with handles.

Product marking / CE

The Petermann Turn Sheet with handles is a Class I Medical Device and meets the EU-Regulation 2017/745 of the European Parliament and Council dated 05.04.2017 for medical devices, also called MDR. Petermann GmbH is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13485 by TÜV Süd, Medical Devices – Quality management systems applicable to the design and development, production and distribution of aids for people of limited mobility.

Cleaning, care and disinfection

The product doesn´t require any special maintenance. It can be machine washed at 90°C and dried at low temperatures (45° – 50°C). We recommend washing with mild detergents. The use of cleaning agents with bleaching ingredients or other chemical laundry additives, also as fabric softeners may lead to permanent deterioration of the product properties. When necessary, we recommend wipe disinfection with the product Trionic® (DGHM/VAH approval, further information upon request). As alternatives to our proven disinfectant Trionic®, we can also recommend the following disinfectants for wipe disinfection:

• Mikrobac® forte*
• Bacillol® 30 Foam
• Bacillol® 30 Tissues

When using products marked with an *, wipe down again using a water-soaked cloth after disinfection has been completed, in order to remove residues and prevent build-up. For wipe disinfection, please be sure to always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Always follow the care instructions on the label of every product as well as the information in the respective user manual.

Due to usual manufacturing variations published dimensions and further information concerning the condition of the product are defined as target production specifications. Deviations which might occur are monitored by professional quality management procedures and do not represent a reduction in the performance of the respective product.

• The company Petermann warrants that the product is free from defects in material and workmanship.
• The warranty period is 3 years. It does not cover defects attributable to abrasion, normal wear, improper use or improper cleaning.

There are no specific disposal regulations for Turn Sheets with handles, they can be disposed of in accordance with applicable national and local regulations.
