Safety instructions

WARNING ! READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL INSTRUCTIONS.
Failure to follow all instructions listed below, may result in electric shock, fire and /or serious personal injury.
Work area

  1. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.
  2. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  3.  Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical Safety

  1. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
    Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords may create a fire.
    (The following applies only to tools with a separate battery pack)

  2. A battery operated tool with integral batteries or a separate battery pack must be recharged only with the specified charger for the battery. A charger that may be suitable for one type of battery may create a risk of fire when used with another battery.

Personal Safety

  1. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  2. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery, or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  3. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is in the locked or off position before inserting batter pack. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch invites accidents.
  4. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enable better control of the tool in unexpected situations
  5. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection, Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions.

Power tool use and care

  1. Use clamps or other practical ways to secure and support the work piece to a stable platform. Holding the work piece by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control.
  2. Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed.
  3. Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on of off. A tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  4. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users
  5. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained tools with sharp cutting edge are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  6. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool’s operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using .Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools.
  7. Use only accessories that are supplied with your model. Other accessories that may not be suitable for this tool and may create a risk of injury when used.

Specific Safety Rules
WARNING: Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

  1. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

  2. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/ or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.

  3. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

  4. This tool is for pruning branches. Do not use it for any job except that for which it is intended.

  5. Never allow children, persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the tool. Local regulations may restrict the age of the operator.

  6. Do not overreach and keep balance at all times. Always be sure of footing on slopes and to walk, never run.

  7. Do not touch moving hazardous parts before the tool is disconnected from the mains and/or the battery pack is removed from the tool.

  8.  Always wear substantial footwear and long trousers while operating the tool.

  9. Disconnect the supply and/or remove the battery pack from the tool:
    – Whenever the tool is left by the user, before clearing a blockage, before checking, cleaning or working on the tool, after striking a foreign object to inspect the tool for damage, if the tool starts to vibrate abnormally, for immediately check.

  10. Never operate the tool with defective guards or shields, or without safety devices, or if the cord is damaged or worn.

  11. Avoid using the tool in bad weather conditions especially when there is a risk of lightning.

  12. Don’t use the tool or perform battery charging operations in the rain.

  13. Don’t leave the tool in rain or wet locations.

  14. Be careful not to catch foreign matter between the blades. If the blades are jammed with foreign matter, immediately switch off the tool and disconnect the battery from the tool. Then remove the foreign matter from the blades.

  15. Never hold the branch you are pruning with your free hand. Keep your free hand away from the cutting area. Never touch the blades, they are very sharp and you may cut yourself.

  16. Don’t force the tool to make it cut. You could slip and injure yourself or cut something else unintentionally.

  17. Avoid cutting electrical wires that may be hidden.

  18. Always check the blades carefully before operation.

  19. Handle the blades with extreme care to prevent cuts or injury from the blades.

  20. Disconnect the battery from the tool after each use and before attempting to perform inspection or maintenance.

  21. When not in use, always keep the tool in its holster.
    Important safety instructions for battery cartridge

  22. Before using battery cartridge, read all instructions and cautionary markings on (1) battery charger, (2) battery, and (3) product using battery.

  23. Do not disassemble battery cartridge.

  24. If operating time has become excessively shorter, stop operating immediately. It may result in a risk of overheating, possible burns and even an explosion.

  25. If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them out with clear water and seek medical attention right away. It may result in loss of your eyesight.

  26. Do not short the battery cartridge:
    (1) Do not touch the terminals with any conductive material.
    (2) Avoid storing battery cartridge in a container with other metal objects such as nails, coins, etc.
    (3) Do not expose battery cartridge to water or rain
    A battery short can cause a large current flow, overheating, possible burns and even a breakdown.

  27. Do not store the tool and battery cartridge in locations where the temperature may reach or exceed 50 °C (122 °F).

  28. Do not incinerate the battery cartridge even if it is severely damaged or is completely worn out. The battery cartridge can explode in a fire.

  29. Be careful not to drop or strike battery.

  30. Do not use a damaged battery.

  31. Lithium-ion batteries are subject to the Dangerous Goods Legislation requirements.
    For commercial transports e.g. by third parties, forwarding agents, special requirement on pack- aging and labelling must be observed. For preparation of the item being shipped, consulting an expert for hazardous material is required. Please also observe possibly more detailed national regulations. Tape or mask off open contacts and pack up the battery in such a manner that it cannot move around in the packaging.

  32. Follow your local regulations relating to disposal of battery.

Recommended and Proper Use
The tool is intended for pruning twigs or branches.

Operating instructions

CAUTION: Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before adjusting or checking function on the tool.
Installing or removing battery cartridge
CAUTION: Always switch off the tool before installing or removing of the battery cartridge.
CAUTION: Hold the tool and the battery cartridge firmly when installing or removing battery cartridge. Failure to hold the tool and the battery cartridge firmly may cause them to slip off your hands and result in damage to the tool and battery cartridge and a personal injury.

To remove the battery cartridge, slide it from the tool while sliding the button on the front of the cartridge. To install the battery cartridge, align the  tongue on the battery cartridge with the groove in the housing and slip it into place. Insert it all the way until it locks in place with a little click.
CAUTION: Always install the battery cartridge fully. If not, it may accidentally fall out of the tool, causing injury to you or someone around you. CAUTION: Do not install the battery cartridge forcibly. If the cartridge does not slide in easily, it is not being inserted correctly.

Battery protection system
The tool is equipped with a battery protection system. This system automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend battery life. The tool will automatically stop during operation if the tool and/or battery are placed under one of the following conditions:
Overload protection : The tool is operated in a manner that causes it to draw an abnormally high current. In this situation, turn the tool off and stop the application that caused the tool to become overloaded. Then turn the tool on to restart. If the tool does not start, the battery is overheated. In this situation, let the battery cool before turning the tool on again.
Overheat protection When the tool/battery is overheated, the tool stops automatically. In this situation, let the tool/battery cool before turning the tool on again.
Overdischarge protection: The remaining battery capacity is too low and the tool will not operate. In this situation, remove and recharge the battery.
Indicating the remaining battery capacity
Press the check button on the battery cartridge to indicate the remaining battery capacity. The indicator lamps  light off immediately when release the check button. Below for detail remaining capacity information.

NOTE: Depending on the conditions of use and the ambient temperature, the indication may differ slightly from the actual capacity.

Switch action
CAUTION: Before connecting the battery to the shears, always check to see that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the “OFF” position when released.
CAUTION: When not operating the tool, always make sure that the I/O switch is on the “O” side.

To turn on the tool, perform as follows:

  1. Insert the battery cartridge.

  2. Hold the shears firmly, and slide the I/O switch to the “I” (on) position.
    The tool makes two ticking sound to indicate that the I/O switch has been on the “I” (on) position.

  3. The shear blades are on locked-mode when the I/O switch is on.
    To release the lock, depress the switch trigger two times.
    The upper shear blade opens automatically.

  4. To close the shear blade, depress the switch trigger once again.

To turn off the tool, perform as follows:

  1. Depress down and hold on the switch trigger for about three seconds and then the tool makes two ticking sound.
  2. Slide the I/O switch to the “O” (off) position. The tool makes continuous ticking sound to indicate that the I/O switch has been on the “O” (off) position.
  3. Remove the battery cartridge.

Accidental re-start preventive function
Even if suddenly insert the battery cartridge and press the switch trigger when the I/O switch is locked on the “I (ON)” position and the shear blades are  on un- locked-mode with the battery removed , the tool does not start to prevent accidental accident.
To start the tool in this situation, depress the switch trigger two times and then depress the switch trigger once by once.

Auto locked-mode and shut-off mode shift
For safety reasons, the tool shifts into shut-off mode automatically if the tool is left untouched for a certain period of time.
After approximately 10 minutes: The tool is shift into shut-off mode.
Slide the I/O switch to the “O” (off) position once and slide the I/O switch to the “I” (on) position again, then depress the switch trigger two times to release the lock.

Assembly instructions

CAUTION: Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work on the tool.

Replacing the upper shear blade (Pictures 1-7 page 3)
To remove the upper shear blade, perform following steps:

  1. Insert the battery cartridge. Remove the blade cover.

  2. Switch on the tool, and pull the switch trigger to open the upper shear blade fully.

  3. With the upper shear blade open, switch off the tool and remove the battery cartridge.

  4. Remove the hex bolt near the shear blades with the hex wrench by turning it anticlockwise.
    Remove the blades tightening nut near the shear blades with a suitable wrench or alike by turning it anticlockwise and take out the washer.

  5. Remove two bolts near the shear blades with the hex wrench by turning anticlockwise.
    Remove the head cover by separating the tongue on the head cover from the groove of the housing. Take out the upper shear blade assembly.

  6. Remove the E-ring on the link arm with a E-ring plier or alike and replace the upper shear blade with a new one.

To install the upper shear blade, perform the removal steps in reverse.
When installing the shear blades, pay attention to the following points:

  1.  Apply machine lubricating oil on to the shear blade.
  2.  When installing the head cover, align the tongue of the head cover with the groove of the housing.
  3. Make sure all the bolts are securely tightened.

After installing the blade, always adjust blade clearance. (Refer to “Adjustment for blade clearance”.).
CAUTION: Only use shear blades specified in this manual by Bormann. The use of any other blades might present a risk of injury to persons or a damage of the tool.

Prior to use

Lubricating the shear blade
The shear blades requires refuel every time before using. To apply machine oil on to the shear blades, perform the following steps:

  1. Insert the battery cartridge. Remove the blade cover.

  2. Switch on the tool, and pull the switch trigger to open the upper shear blade fully.

  3. With the upper shear blade open, switch off the tool and remove the battery cartridge.

  4. Remove the hex bolt near the shear blades with the hex wrench by turning it anticlockwise.
    Note: for steps1~4, refer to 1~4 steps of “Replace the upper shear blade”

  5. Squeeze the oil from the machine oil bottle into the threaded hole.

  6. Reinstall the hex bolt by turning it clockwise.

  7. Turn on the tool to operate unloaded for several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
    NOTICE: Always fill the right amount of lubricating oil each time. Avoid too much or too little.

Adjustment for blade clearance
From time to time, adjust the clearance of the shear blades as follows:

  1. Insert the battery cartridge. Remove the blade cover.
  2. Switch on the tool, and pull the switch trigger to open the upper shear blade fully.
  3. With the upper shear blade open, switch off the tool and remove the battery cartridge.
  4. Loosen the hex bolt near the shear blades with the hex wrench by turning it anticlockwise.
  5. Adjust the tightness of the blades tightening nut with a suitable wrench by turning it clockwise or anticlockwise (fastening torque for the blade  tightening nut: approximately 0.5 Nm). Note: for steps 1~5, refer to 1~4 steps of “Replace the upper shear blade” for reference.
  6. Tighten the hex bolt again.
  7. Check the tightness of the blades whether the blades never rattle or swing sideways. If the blades are too tight or loose, adjust the clearance again.
    CAUTION: Pay attention to the clearance of the blades. Too loose clearance may result in dull cut, and too tight blade clearance may result in overload for the motor and short running time of the tool.
    CAUTION: When the blades are closed, the blades should not swing sideways. Lateral swing is an abnormal state. Lateral swing will create a gap between the two blades, resulting in the gear teeth not meshing properly and causing damage to the mechanical structure.
    CAUTION: Always hold the tool firmly. And keep firm footing.
    CAUTION: Do not put any of your body parts near to the blades during operation.
    CAUTION: Before use, inspect if the blades, blade bolts or other parts are not worn or damaged. Replace worn or damaged parts for safe operation.
    NOTICE: If the blade is stuck in a branch during operation, do not twist the blade. In that situation, turn off the tool and pull the blades straight out slowly from the branch. Otherwise the blade may be damaged.

Pruning operation

Cut branches one by one. The maximum thickness of branches which can be cut with these shears is about 30mm.
Maintain your proper footing and balance at all times.

After use
After use Close the shear blades, press the I/O switch to the “O” (off) position, and remove the battery cartridge.
Store the shears in dry, high or locked-up place out of reach of children. Install the shear blade cover on.
NOTICE: Remove the battery when not using the shears. Otherwise the battery capacity is reduced during course of time.

Maintenance

CAUTION: Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before attempting to perform inspection or maintenance.
NOTICE: Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol or the like. Discolouration, deformation or cracks may result.
To maintain product safety and reliability, repairs, any other maintenance or adjustment should be performed by Bormann authorized or factory service centers, always using Bormann replacement parts.
Blade maintenance
NOTICE: Failure to perform blade maintenance may cause excessive blade friction and shorten the operating time per battery charge.
Before and after operation, check the shear blades carefully. After operation, clean off the blades with a stiff brush.
Then wipe the blades with a cloth. And apply oil onto the blade edge and movable part.

Troubleshooting

Before making a request for repairs, check for trouble by yourself. If any abnormality is found, control your tool according to the description of this manual.
If the remedy mentioned below cannot solve the problem, ask your local authorized service center for repair. Never tamper or dismount any part contrary to the description.

Description of problem Probable cause Remedy
The shear blade does not move even after pulling the switch trigger. The
battery is low. Charge the battery.
