Flamco Airfix A/D Expansion Vessels for Potable Water
WHAT’S INCLUDE
General
This manual is for:
- Airfix A expansion vessels with a capacity of 8 to 80 litres with a flow distributor to be fitted in a standard Airfix A T-piece (not included).
- Airfix D expansion vessels with capacity of 8 to 35 litres with an Airfix TD-piece.
The package includes an expansion vessel (A) with label, a manual (B) and a flow distributor (C). Airfix D comes with an Airfix TD-piece (D). Optional is an AirfixControl (E). See the label for the maximum working pressure and the pre-charge.
Application
- Use on the cold-water side of drinking water installations in combination with a type boiler system.
- Use in pressurized systems.
- Any form of warranty of liability will be voided if used in any other way.
Installation
- Expansion vessels with a capacity of 8 to 25 litres are installed hanging on the water nipple (F). If necessary, use wall bracket MB 2 / MB 3 (G).
- Expansion vessels with a capacity of 35 to 80 litres are installed hanging on the mounting eye (H), with the water nipple (F) downward.
- For a properly working expansion vessel, a pressure-reducing valve must be fitted immediately behind the water meter.
- It’s recommended to mount the AirfixControl (E) between the T-piece and the barrel to control the pressure.
Safety
- Expansion vessels come with pressure: damage can cause serious injury. The piping must be able to carry a full expansion.
- When flushing/cleaning the installation with chemical additives (for example: protection against legionella) the vessel of the drinking water system must be closed, for example use an AirfixControl.
- Prevent overpressure in the installation. Install a safety valve (for example Prescor B) or a safety group in the boiler pipes to ensure this.
- Set the opening pressure of the safety valve to a value that is equal to or lower than the maximum pressure shown on the label.
Installation
The installation must be carried out by approved personnel only. Observe local regulations.
Airfix A:
- Slide de pieces of the flow distributor (C) approx. 58 mm apart. Push the flow distributor with the round cap into the T-piece (I).
Airfix D:
- Fit the Airfix TD-piece (D) in the cold water feed pipe. The direction of water flow has no influence on the Airfix TD T-piece.
Continuation Airfix A and Airfix D:
- Put PTFE tape (J) (do not use hemp!) on the expansion vessel connection.
- For the purpose of the prescribed annual maintenance, installing an AirfixControl is recommended. Insert PTFE tape on that to.
- Screw the expansion vessel onto the T-piece.
First Use
- Close the water supply (K) and drain the pressure form the boiler.
- Adjust the pre-charge of the expansion vessel to a value of 0.2 bar lower than the minimum cold-water pipe pressure. See the vessel label for the pre-charge.
- Remove the guard (L) and the plug (M).
- Measure the pressure (P).
- Push the inner valve (S) lightly if the pressure is too high.
- If the pressure is too low, increase the pre-charge with nitrogen.
- Measure the pressure again.
- Repeat this procedure until the pre-charge is correct.
- Install the plug and the guard.
- Open the water supply.
- Examine the seal for leaks.

Consult the Flamco documentation for the correct calculation.
Maintenance
Keep this manual close to the expansion vessel. Flamco provides a 5-year
warranty on the condition that the Airfix expansion vessel is serviced by a
qualified installer each year. The annual service must be documented by the
installer carrying out the maintenance on the relevant pages at the end of
this manual.
Even when water disappears trough the safety valve, maintenance must be
performed.
Check the outward condition of the vessel for damage or corrosion. Check the
correct pressure as follows:
- Close the water supply.
- Drain the boiler until the pressure is 0 bar.
- Check the pre-charge.
- If the pressure is too low, increase the pre-charge with nitrogen. If the expansion vessel cannot be pressurized: replace the expansion vessel.
De-installation
- Close the water supply (K) or AirfixControl (E) and drain the pressure from the system.
- Remove the cap (L) and the plug (M).
- Push on the inner valve (S) to remove pressure (P) from the expansion vessel.
- Unscrew the expansion vessel (A).
Caution: A full expansion vessel is heavy! The water in the expansion
vessel may be hot!
Environment: Observe the local regulations when you dispose of the
expansion vessel.
