SAFETY REMARK

A camera lens can have the effect of a magnifying glass when exposed to direct frontal sunlight. The camera must therefore be protected against extended exposure to direct sunlight. Using the lens cap and keeping the camera in the shade (ideally in its camera case) will help prevent damage to the interior of the camera.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Make a note of the serial numbers of your camera (engraved in the base of the camera housing) and lenses, as this information will be extremely important in case of loss.
  • Make sure to always have a lens or the camera bayonet cover attached to prevent dust or other foreign bodies penetrating the camera.
  • That is why you should always replace lenses quickly and in a dust-free environment.
  • Never store the camera bayonet cover or the rear lens cover in a pants pocket, as they will attract lint and dust, which could then be accidentally introduced into the camera.
  • Leica releases firmware updates for lenses at irregular intervals. You can download any new firmware version from our homepage and transfer it to your lens.

SPECIAL FEATURES

DESIGN OF THE LEICA SL LENSES

All Leica SL lenses basically look the same on the outside: On the front mount there is an external bayonet fitting for the lens hood and an internal thread for filters, as well as a focus ring and an alignment button for lens changes.
All data exchange between the camera and lens is effected via a contact strip in the bayonet, including the control commands for autofocus and aperture.

FOCUSING

In autofocus mode, the camera sets the sharpness automatically, while the user turns the focus ring 3 manually in manual mode. The speed at which you turn the ring determines how quickly the setting changes. You can therefore make fine adjustments or quickly move from a close-up to a long range setting. Please refer to the relevant sections in the camera manual for more details.

DEPTH OF FIELD
No depth of field scale is provided, because Leica SL lenses don’t come with an aperture settings ring. Instead, the top display of the camera shows the near and far focal length limits of the depth of field alongside the set distance.

LENS HOOD

The APO-Summicron-SL 35 f/2 ASPH. comes with a lens hood 1 optimally adapted to the beam paths. As the bayonet fitting is perfectly symmetrical, the lens hood can be attached in reverse for space-saving storage. In both cases, it is attached (with the lens cap removed) with one of the alignment points on the lens hood 1a aligning with the alignment point on the front mount of the lens 2b. It is then turned by approx. 30° in clockwise direction until it audibly clicks into place. The lens hood should remain attached as long as the camera is carried ready for use or is in use. It effectively eliminates contrast-reducing stray light and protects the front lens against damage and soiling (e.g. accidental fingerprint marks).

FILTERS

The APO-Summicron-SL 35 f/2 ASPH. is compatible with screw-in filters of type E67. Matching filters are available from Leica.

MTF GRAPHS
The MTF is shown in each case f or the maximum aperture and the aperture values 5.6 and 8.0 for long focusing distances (infinity). The contrast is plotted for 5, 10, 20, 40 lines/mm for the height of the format for tangential (dashed line) and sagittal structures (continuous line) for white light. The plots for 5 and 10 lines/mm provide an impression of the contrast performance for coarser object structures and the 20 and 40 lines/mm plots document the resolving power for fine and finest object structures.
