The following symbols and signal words are used in these operating instructions:

Intended use

  • The Petromax Atago gas barbecue is intended for use on a table or the floor for grilling or cooking suitable food for leisure purposes and is not suitable for commercial use.
  • The Petromax Atago gas barbecue may only be used outdoors with unlimited air exchange.
  • This appliance may only be operated with EN 417 butane-propane mixture screw-in cartridges with 7/16 x 28 UNEF thread! It can be dangerous to attempt to connect other types of gas cartridges or gas cylinders. Suitable gas cartridges are not included in the scope of delivery; you can obtain gas cartridges from specialist retailers or online.
  • The Petromax Atago gas barbecue is not suitable for use with liquid gas systems in leisure vehicles and on boats.

For your safety

  • Use the Atago gas barbecue on a horizontal level.
  • Do not use an Atago gas barbecue that is leaking, defective, or not working properly.
  • Always operate the Atago gas barbecue under supervision! Never leave the Atago gas barbecue unattended during preheating or barbecuing. Always exercise caution when handling.
  • Always work with caution and only when you are in good health: tiredness, illness, alcohol, medication, and drugs are irresponsible, as you can no longer use the product safely.
  • Do not smoke or use naked flames in the immediate vicinity when changing gas cartridges! Change gas cartridges outdoors, away from sources of electrical ignition, and away from other people.
  • Do not make any changes to the device! The Atago gas barbecue must not be tampered with.

Warning! Explosion hazard!

Instructions for handling liquid gas valve cartridges
Avoid violence and mechanical damage! Gas can escape and explosive air-gas mixtures can occur. In addition, escaping liquid gas can cause cold burns to the skin.

  • Protect from heat (sunlight).
  • Protect the liquid gas cartridge from heating! At higher temperatures, especially when exposed to fire, there is a risk of uncontrolled gas leakage or even bursting of the cartridge.

In the event of faults and leaks

  • Liquid gas (propane, butane, and their mixtures) is an extremely flammable, colorless gas with a perceptible odor. It is heavier than air and can ignite even when only slightly mixed with the surrounding air. Uncontrolled escaping gas can deflagrate or explode.
  • In the event of faults and leaks where you can hear or smell gas escaping, turn off the gas regulator immediately and check for leaks.
  • If the burner goes out, turn the regulator to the right. After a few minutes, the gas will have completely escaped and you can switch the gas barbecue back on. However, the barbecue may be hot!

In case of fire

  • Move a safe distance away from the Atago gas barbecue and inform the fire brigade.
  • Advise the firefighters of the presence of liquid gas cartridges during the phone call!
  • If possible, remove the gas cartridge from the area at risk of fire or cool it with water if necessary!

Transport and storage instructions

Warning! Risk of injury and damage to property!

  • Transporting and storing the Atago gas barbecue with screwed-on gas cartridges can lead to serious injuries or explosions.
  • Before transporting or storing the Atago gas barbecue, remove the gas cartridge from the gas connection and secure the gas cartridge with the sealing cap.

Warning! Risk of deflagration!

  • Never transport or store the gas cartridges lying down, but always upright with the valve facing upwards and secured against falling over and slipping.
  • Liquid gas cylinders – even empty ones – may only be stored upright and standing in well-ventilated areas: not below ground level (e.g. cellars, shafts), in stairwells, corridors, passageways, emergency exits, escape routes, and passages in buildings or their immediate vicinity. A maximum of two small cylinders may be stored in one dwelling – but in separate rooms (not in bedrooms).
  • Keep the gas cartridge out of the reach of children. Liquid gas cartridges stored outdoors must be secured against unauthorized access.

Commissioning, assembly, installation, instructions

Before using the Atago gas barbecue for the first time, the user must ensure that the Atago gas barbecue and accessories are in proper condition. When using the Petromax Atago gas barbecue for the first time, it may be difficult to extend and retract the housing of the Atago gas barbecue. Never use force to extend or retract the housing.

Fitting and replacing the gas cartridge
Before fitting or changing the gas cartridge, follow the instructions of the gas cartridge manufacturer and comply with them!

  • When you place the LPG cartridge down, pay attention to possible risks of damage and weather influences. Do not use a damaged cartridge. A dented or rusty cartridge can be dangerous and must be replaced immediately.
  • Check that the seal (between the appliance and the gas cartridge) is present and in good condition before connecting the gas cartridge. Do not use an appliance with damaged or worn seals.
  • Check the position of the connection for the hose line to ensure that it is not twisted.
  • Change the gas cartridge outdoors and away from other people.
  • Before loosening the gas cartridge, check that the burners have gone out.
  • After you have connected the gas cartridge with the hose line to the Atago gas barbecue, check it for leaks (see chapter „Maintenance and cleaning“).
    • Please note! Check whether there is still gas in the gas cartridge.
  • To do this, you can weigh the cartridge. Alternatively, if you run your finger down the cartridge, you can recognize the fill level by where the metal feels cold. When the gas cartridge is empty, replace it with a new one.

Notes on the installation location of the gas barbecue

Find a suitable location for the Atago gas barbecue where it no longer needs to be moved.

Place the Atago gas barbecue horizontally on a firm, non-flammable, level, and stable surface on its feet, protected from the wind.

  • Never use the Atago gas barbecue if one of the feet is not correctly folded out and locked into place. Make sure that it does not rock or tip over.
  • Do not set up near flammable objects. Keep a sufficient distance from buildings, people, animals, plants, and objects. There must be no flammable materials in the protected area.

Please note!
Ignition sources must be avoided within a distance of 0.5 m from the LPG cartridge valve when changing the cartridge. There must be no openings in buildings or vehicles within a radius of 0.5 m from the liquid gas cartridge. There must be no unprotected gas inlets, air, light or cellar shafts, or similar within a radius of 1 m from the location of the liquid gas cartridge.

Liquid gas cartridges must be placed at such a distance from sources of radiant heat (e.g. gas barbecue) that the liquid gas in the liquid gas cartridges is not heated above 50 °C.

Operation

Before starting, have a bucket of sand ready to extinguish the fire. Use a grease fire extinguisher if necessary.

Attention! Accidental gas leakage!
Torsional stress on the hose during operation – must be avoided!

Ignition of the Atago gas barbecue via the piezo ignition: Turn the control to the left and activate the piezo ignition.

Your gas barbecue should now be working: A normal flame glows blue and may have a yellow tip.

Attention! Accidental gas leakage!
If the burner does not ignite within 10 seconds, cancel the ignition and turn the control to the right. Wait 3 minutes for the gas to escape before attempting to relight the Atago gas barbecue.

Use the control (+/-) to adjust the intensity of the flame by turning the control clockwise to reduce the flame or by turning the control anti-clockwise to increase the intensity of the flame.

Please note!

  • Avoid dripping grease into the flame. Keep the burner clean to avoid subsequent ignition faults.
  • When the Atago gas barbecue is no longer in use, turn the control knob as far to the right as possible.

Disassembly

Check that the burners are extinguished before removing the gas cartridge. Remove the gas cartridge and the gas hose:

  1. When the Atago gas barbecue is no longer in use, turn the control to the right (clockwise) (minus -).
  2. Unscrew the gas cartridge and turn it to the right (clockwise).
  3. Remove the piezo ignition.
  4. Unscrew the gas hose from the barbecue.

Folding up the feet of the gas barbecue:

  1. Wait until the grill has cooled down.
  2. Lift the Atago gas barbecue by reaching under the housing with both hands. At the same time, the housing parts slide into each other and the feet disappear into the housing to save space.

Maintenance and cleaning

The Atago gas barbecue must be inspected at regular intervals. The inspections must be arranged by the user of the Atago gas barbecue. Parts of the system that are susceptible to wear (e.g. regulator, hose, seal) must be replaced if they no longer function safely. The hose line must be replaced with a new one after the expiry date and no later than 10 years after the date of manufacture.

  • Please note!
Only use original Petromax spare parts.

  • Warning!

    • Risk of injury and damage to property! Do not make any modifications to the appliance! Repairs and maintenance on the Atago gas barbecue may only be carried out by authorized specialists.
    • Check the burner for deposits before each use and remove them before using the Atago gas barbecue.

Leak test

  • If gas escapes from your Atago gas barbecue (smell of gas), only check the gas barbecue for leaks outdoors and away from sources of ignition. Never search for a leak with a flame, instead use soapy water or leak detection spray!
  • Check the gas connection for leaks regularly and after every cartridge change.
  • Spray the connection between the gas cartridge and the Atago gas barbecue, the gas cartridge neck, and the temperature regulator with commercially available leak detection spray or brush them with soapy water (ratio 1 part soap / 3 parts water). Turn the temperature regulator anti-clockwise until you hear a soft hissing sound. If no bubbles are visible, you can start grilling.
  • Bubbles appear at leaks and gas flows out. Turn the temperature regulator back to the „OFF“ position.
    • Unscrew the gas cartridge completely and screw it back onto the gas connection. If gas leaks again, the Atago gas barbecue must not be used! Insert a new cartridge and carry out the leakage test again. If bubbles are still visible, contact customer service.
    • If bubbles can be seen on the gas regulator or valve, interrupt the gas supply. In this case, do not use the gas barbecue. Contact customer service.

Cleaning
To extend the service life of your Atago gas barbecue, clean it after each use. Before cleaning, remove the gas cartridge from the gas connection.

  • Warning! Risk of fire and burns!
Do not use any flammable cleaning agents. Wait until the Atago gas barbecue has cooled down sufficiently before cleaning.

  • Attention! Risk of damage to property!
Do not immerse in water! This can cause the water to penetrate the burner tubes and damage the Atago gas barbecue.

  • Do not use abrasive cleaning agents or scouring pads as this will permanently damage the surface.

  • Wipe the Atago gas barbecue with a damp cloth. If necessary, use a mild detergent and wipe the surfaces with a cloth moistened with clean water. Dry the parts carefully.

  • Remove food residues from the burner with a soft brush.

Removable grease drip tray:

Warning! Grease fire hazard!
Clean the grease drip tray before each use of the Atago gas barbecue! A grease fire can lead to serious personal injury and damage to property! Never extinguish burning fat with water, but with a fat fire extinguisher!

Check whether there is grease in the grease drip tray:

  1. Remove the grill rack.
  2. Remove the protective plate to protect the burner.
  3. Remove the grease drip tray carefully. Always keep it straight.
  4. Remove grease with a scraper, e.g. scraper for fire pots and pans (art.: os and os-z).
  5. Then clean the grease drip tray with soapy water. Rinse it out with clean water and dry it carefully.
  6. Put the grease drip tray back into the Atago gas barbecue.

Please note!
Do not line the grease drip tray with aluminum foil.
