User manual for Petromax Fire Skillet

Thank you for purchasing the Petromax Fire Skillet! With your new Fire Skillet you can cook your food on an open fire or in your homekitchen while enjoying the unique properties of the high-quality cast iron. We are convinced that you will be delighted with the great features the Petromax Fire Skillet has to offer and we hope that every dish will be a culinary pleasure.

Important instruction

Please read this user manual carefully before using the product for the first time. Follow the safety instructions and keep this user manual for future reference. If the Petromax Fire Skillet is given to another person, this user manual must also be given to that person.

Product description

You can use the Fire Skillet on any electric or gas stove, in the oven, as well as outdoors on a campfire or a grill. The cast iron stores and transfers heat optimally, is easy-care and can be used immediately due to the pre- seasonsed finish.

Safety instructions

• Caution! The Fire Skillet will become very hot when in use. Thus, children and animals should not be allowed near the Fire Skillet. Only touch the Fire Skillet and its parts with heat-resistant gloves, potholders or lid lifter.
• Do not pour cold liquids (such as water) onto the hot Fire Skillet for the cast iron can crack or be otherwise damaged.
• Never use dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the Fire Skillet.
• Do not drop the Fire Skillet onto a hard surface, as cast iron is a brittle material that can crack.
• Caution on sensitive surfaces! Follow the instructions for use provided by your stove manufacturer and avoid sliding cast-iron cookware back and forth on the stove top. Lift your Fire Skillet before moving it on the stove top! You also reduce the risk of scratches by wiping the surface and the base of the pan with a clean, lint-free cloth (e.g. made of microfibre) before cooking. In general, you can use the Fire Skillet on all stove types.

Before the first use

Clean the Fire Skillet thoroughly with hot water before using it for the first time. Thanks to the preseasoned surface you can use your sturdy Petromax Fire Skillet immediately without prior seasoning. Do not cook any acidic food during the first few uses of your skillet, for it can damage the patina, the protective layer of the Fire Skillet.

Care and storage

As long as you take care of your Fire Skillet correctly, it will last for generations. Thus, you must follow a few important basic rules.

• Let the Fire Skillet cool down completely before cleaning it thoroughly with hot water. Never use dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the Fire Skillet. It can damage or even destroy the patina.
• Use a commercially available dishwashing brush or a sponge to clean the Fire Skillet.
• Always dry the Fire Skillet thoroughly after cleaning, and apply a thin layer of Petromax Care Conditioner for Cast and Wrought Iron before stowing the Fire Skillet. You can also use a neutral oil or vegetable fat. Do not use olive oil, for it cannot be heated to a high temperature.
• The Fire Skillet is not dishwasher safe.
• Never stow the Fire Skillet when wet or untreated.

Re-seasoning

The patina (protective layer of the Fire Skillet) must be renewed when it is affected. It can happen, for instance, that your Fire Skillet starts to rust at places, due to incorrect storage. In that case, please proceed as follows.

• Remove the rust with a wire brush or a metal sponge. Then clean the Fire Skillet with hot water, dishwashing liquid and a dishwashing brush or a sponge. Dry thoroughly.

• Coat the Fire Skillet (inner and outer surfaces) with neutral oil, vegetable fat or the Petromax Care Conditoner for Cast and Wrought Iron. Do not use olive oil as it cannot be heated as high as other kinds of grease.

• Then place the Fire Skillet in a preheated oven at a temperature of approx. 180 °C. Let bake for 1 to 2 hours and then switch off the oven. Open the oven door slightly and let the Fire Skillet cool down.

• Caution! Burning the layer of grease can cause smoke. We, therefore, recommend doing the seasoning outside, for instance on an open fire or in a
  kettle grill.

• Grease the Fire Skillet again once it has cooled down. Your Fire Skillet is now seasoned.

Warranty

In case of proper use, a warranty period of two years will apply to your Petromax Fire Skillet from the date of purchase. If you cannot use your Petromax Fire Skillet properly due to a defect in material or manufacture, you are entitled to a warranty repair. Contact your retailer for that purpose.
