Please read this user manual carefully before using your product for the first time. Follow the safety instructions and store this user manual. If the Petromax Poultry Roaster is given to another person, this user manual must also be given to that person.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT

The cast-iron roaster is ideally suitable for poultry such as chickens, pigeons or smaller ducks. The cooked poultry will be particularly tasty and juicy, for the poultry holder has a  well for herbs, spices and liquids. The big drip pan gathers surplus fat and makes the roaster pleasant to use thanks to two lateral spouts as well as two handles. You can use the poultry roaster on a grill or in the oven. The cast iron, which outstandingly transfers and stores heat, can be used immediately and is easy to care tor thanks to the pre-seasoned surface.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Caution! The poultry roaster can become extremely hot when being used. Thus children should never be allowed near the poultry roaster. Protect your hands with heat-resistant gloves or a cloth when touching the hot poultry roaster.

  • Be careful! As soon as the poultry roaster contains hot liquids, keep it always straight, in order not to spill anything.
  • Caution! Do not fill the well with high-proof alcohol, for it evaporates quickly and can catch fire.
  • Caution! Do not put the hot poultry roaster on (heat-sensitive surfaces.
  • Do not pour cold liquids (such as water) onto the hot poultry roaster, for cast iron can crack or be otherwise damaged.
  • Never use dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the poultry roaster.
  • Do not let the poultry roaster fall onto a hard surface, for cast iron is a brittle material that can crack.

BEFORE THE FIRST USE
Thoroughly clean the poultry roaster with hot water before using it for the first time. Thanks to the pre-seasoned surface you can immediately use your sturdy Petromax Poultry Roaster, without needing to season it first. The first few times you use it, do not cook any acidic food, for it can damage the patina, the protective layer of the poultry roaster.
HOW TO USE

  1. Prepare the poultry however you like, e.g. seasoning or marinating.
  2. Fill the well of the poultry holder with herbs, spices, and liquid such as stock, beer, and wine Fig. 1). Caution! Do not fill the well with high-proof alcohol, for it evaporates quickly and can catch fire.
  3. Place the poultry on the poultry holder. Make sure it cannot move (Fig. 2). Vegetables, stock or sauce can also be added to the drip pan around the poultry depending on what you like or on the recipe.
  4. Put the poultry roaster in your oven or on your grill. Keep a minimum distance of 2 cm (0.8 in) to the barbecue lid or to the heating coils of the oven. Cook in the preheated oven at ca. 200 °C (392 °F) for 50 to 65 minutes according to the size of the poultry.
  5. Grill your poultry until it is crispy, or follow the instructions of the used recipe.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE AND STORAGE

As long as you take correct care of your poultry roaster, it should last for generations. Thus you must follow a few important basic rules:

  • Let the poultry roaster cool down completely, then clean it with warm water. Never use dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the poultry roaster. It can damage or even ruin the patina.
  • Use a commercially available dishwashing brush or a sponge to clean the poultry roaster. The poultry roaster is not dishwasher-safe.
  • Once your poultry roaster is clean, dry it thoroughly.
  • Apply a thin layer of grease onto the cast iron. Use a neutral oil, vegetable fat or the Petromax Care Conditioner. Avoid using olive oil, for it cannot reach a temperature as high as other types of fat. Then store it in a dry place.
  • Never store the poultry roaster when it is wet and untreated.

SEASONING
The patina (the protective layer of the poultry roaster) must be renewed when it is affected. It can happen, for instance, that your poultry roaster starts to rust here and there, for it has not been dried or stored correctly. In that case, you should proceed as follows:

  • Remove the rust with a wire brush or a metal sponge. Then clean the poultry roaster with warm water, dishwashing liquid, and a dish-washing brush or a sponge. Then dry it up thoroughly.
  • Coat the whole roaster (inner and outer sur- faces) with a neutral oil, vegetable fat or the Petromax Care Conditioner.
  • Then place the poultry roaster in a prehea- ted oven at a temperature of approx. 180 °C (356 °F. Let the roaster there for 1 to 2 hours and then switch off the oven. Half-open the oven and let the poultry roaster cool down.
  • Burning produce smoke. There Caution! fat fore we recommend that you do the seasoning outside, for instance on a fire or on a grill.the layer of can Grease all the parts again once they have cooled down. Your poultry roaster is now seasoned.
