ADDITIONAL MATERIALS
Circular knitting needle size 6 (4 mm), 36 in. (91.5 cm) long
GAUGE
20 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Garter st (knit every st on every row).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
NOTES
- Five separate Strips are worked, each in 2 sections. The first section is worked from the lower edge up, then the second section is worked from sts picked up along each long side of Strip.
- The Strips are sewn together to make the Afghan, then sts are picked up along the top and lower edges to make the borders.
- A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth in rows on the circular needle as if working on straight needles.
STRIP (MAKE 5)
Cast on 25 sts
Tip
You can knit multiple Strips at the same time! To knit more than one Strip at
a time, cast on with a separate cake of yarn for each Strip, then work each
Strip with its own cake of yarn.
To keep the yarn strands untangled, we placed each yarn cake into a ziplock
bag, then zipped each bag almost closed, leaving an opening just large enough
for the strand of yarn.
FIRST SECTION
Work in Garter st (knit every st on every row) until piece measures about 40
in. (101.5 cm) from beginning.
Note
Strips don’t have a right or wrong side. When you pick up sts to knit the
Second Section, you can pick up on either side of the First Section
SECOND SECTION
Tip
To pick up sts evenly spaced, use pins or markers to divide the long edge of
the Strip into sections: first, fold Strip in half and mark the center, now
divide further into 4 or even 8 sections. If you divided into 4 sections, pick
up 50 sts across each section; if you divided into 8 sections, pick up 25 sts
across each section.
Pick up and knit 200 sts evenly spaced across one long side edge of Strip.
Knit 11 rows.
Bind off.
Repeat second section along the opposite long side edge of Strip.
FINISHING
Sew the long sides of Strips together.
TOP BORDER
Pick up and knit 188 sts evenly spaced across top edge of Afghan.
Knit 11 rows.
Bind off.
LOWER BORDER
Pick up and knit 188 sts along lower edge of Afghan.
Knit 11 rows.
