STITCH EXPLANATIONS

S1yo (slip 1, yarn over) If working yarn isn’t already in front, bring working yarn to the front between needles. Yarn over (taking working yarn to back). Keeping working yarn in back, slip next st as if to purl. Note: 2 loops are placed on the right needle. The pair of loops is counted as 1 Brioche st. BRK1 (brioche knit stitch) If working yarn isn’t already in the back, bring working yarn to back between needles. Insert the needle into the next pair of loops (from s1yo in the previous round) and knit them together.
Note: 1 loop is placed on the right needle. The single loop is counted as 1 Brioche st.
BRP1 (brioche purl stitch) If the working yarn isn’t already in front, bring the working yarn to the front between needles. Insert the needle into the next pair of loops (from s1yo in the previous round) and purl them together.
Note: 1 loop is placed on the right needle. The single loop is counted as 1 Brioche st.
NOTES

  1. The cowl is worked in rounds of Brioche stitch.
  2. The yarn color is changed every and to create a 2-color Brioche pattern.
  3. Photo tutorials are provided to help you learn how to make the S1yo, BRK1, and BRP1 Brioche sts.
  4. In this design, an S1yo (slip 1, yarn over) is not created making a slip stitch and then yarn over. The abbreviation for this can be confusing. Instead, make the yarn over first and then slip the next stitch. Maker is a continental knitter this is reflected in photos. If you are an English knitter you may want to find a video on YouTube for extra help.
  5. Note that yarn colors in photos do not reflect those used in this project.
  6. To move the yarn from front to back or back to front, bring yarn between needles. Take care not to wrap the yarn over a needle, this could create an additional set.

COWL

With A, cast on 100 sts.
Place marker for beginning of the end. Join by working the first st on the left-hand needle with the working yarn from the right-hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Set-Up Rnd: With A, S1yo, k1; rep from around – you will have 100 Brioche sts in this row consisting of 50 S1yo pairs and 50 knit sts.

Photo Tutorial for Setup Rnd

Step 1: Here you can see that I have made a yarn around the needle.

Step 2: Now you are going to slip your next stitch. You will always slip your stitch as if to purl.

Step 3: Knit the next stitch.

You will now join Color B. Color B will always be used to work the purl/ BRP 1 rnds.
Rnd 1 (purl/BRP1 rnd): With B, BRP1, s1yo; rep from around.
Photo Tutorial for Rnd 1:
Your first stitch of this row is going to be a BRP1.
Step 1: Insert your needle through your first 2 stitches. These are your “couple” stitches (see that they are laying to the right of the new color yarn) and you will always work your couples together. (Think of this like you are knitting 2 purl stitches together). Lay your yarn over the top of your needle and purl these stitches together.

Step 2: Now work an S1yo after that BRP1. In our last round, we worked an S1yo and knit the next stitch. This time we will work an S1yo and purl the next stitch. Due to this, our yarn will do something different. To begin, yarn over and keep the yarn in the back.

Step 3: Slip your stitch while keeping that contrasting yarn in the back.

Step 4: Now bring your contrasting yarn back around to the front, making a little “yarn shawl” around your slipped stitch. This has fully completed your S1yo.

Step 5: Insert your needle through the next 2 stitches to purl your slipped stitch from the last round and yarn over the stitch together (BRP1).

The last stitch of Rnd 1 is going to be an S1yo. Do this as normal and just leave your contrasting (Color B) yarn hanging to the front of your work.
This is what your completed Rnd 1 will look like (I am using a higher contrast of yarns here so that you can easily tell the difference – here my Color A is the colored yarn and B is white). Colors from the beginning for Rnd1 should be: B, B, A, repeat

Pick up Color A, which should be at the back of your work.
Color A will always be used to work knit/BRK1 rnds.
Rnd 2 (knit/BRK1 rnd): With A, S1yo, BRK1; rep from around.
Unlike when you worked your first round, the “couples” from this point on will always be opposite colors. If we look at the last photo again of our finished Rnd 1, we can see here that the yarn over in white (Color B) is next to the knit stitch in Color A. Those two stitches will be worked together.

This is what Rnd 2 will look like when you finish it.
Your couples have switched around now.
Colors from the beginning of Rnd 2 should be A, B, A, repeat.
You can count how many pairs of rounds you have completed after you complete Rnd 2 by counting each knit stitch up your cowl.

Pattern from this point on:
Rnd 3: With B, BRP1, S1yo; rep from around.
Rnd 4: With A, S1yo, BRK1; rep from around.
Rep Rnds 3 and 4 until piece measures about 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm) from the beginning, end with an Rnd 3 as last and you work.
Last Rnd: With A, p1, BRK1; rep from around.
With A, bind off loosely as if to knit.

FINISHING

Weave in ends.
