Frequently asked questions:
Q: How do you know if your blood pressure monitor is accurate?
A: The technology used in your new blood pressure monitor meets the
highest clinical standards. When used correctly, this monitor will provide
readings comparable to those taken in your doctor’s office. Always wait at
least 5 minutes between measurements.
Note: Due to normal physiologic changes and many external factors
influencing blood pressure, it is unusual to obtain identical measurements
even when taken a few minutes apart.
Q: Why might your blood pressure results be different than at your doctor’s
office?
A: Many people experience what is called “White Coat Hypertension” when
having blood pressure measured in a doctor’s office or clinic. The blood
pressure readings are somewhat higher than the readings you obtain when you
measure it yourself in a relaxed atmosphere at home.
People who have raised blood pressure under the stress of everyday conditions
can have normal readings under quiet conditions at the doctors. Then, we speak
of “doctor’s surgery normotension”. Discuss the possibility of White Coat
Hypertension with your doctor.
Q: Your blood pressure varies throughout the day. How do you know which is
your true blood pressure?
A: The average of several results obtained over several days, under
comparable conditions represents your individual blood pressure.
In order to ensure comparable values, always measure your blood pressure at
the same time of the day.
