Device

  • Only use original Medela accessories.
  • Keep Calma away from radiators and open flames.
  • Do not expose Calma to direct sunlight.
  • Inspect before each use: pull the transparent silicone part in all directions to make sure it is still intact. Throw the part away at the first sign of damage or weakness.
  • Plastic bottles and component parts become brittle when frozen and may break when dropped.
  • Also, bottles and component parts may become damaged if mishandled, e.g. dropped, over-tightened, or knocked over.
  • Take appropriate care in handling bottles and components.
  • Do not use the breast milk if bottles or components become damaged.
Use
  • Follow the cleaning instructions.

For your child’s safety and health
WARNING!

  • Always use this product with adult supervision.
  • Never use feeding teats as a soother.
  • Continuous and prolonged sucking of fluids will cause tooth decay.
  • Always check the food temperature before feeding (risk of burning).
  • Keep all components not in use out of reach of children.
  • Do not warm milk in a microwave oven as this may cause uneven heating and could scald your baby.

Cleaning and hygiene
Clean all parts immediately after use with soapy water to avoid the drying up of milk residues and to prevent growth of bacteria.

  • Only use drinking-quality water for cleaning.
  • Do not clean Calma with a sharp or hard object (such as a brush, a toothpick or sharp fingernails).
  • If you clean Calma in a dishwasher, parts may change in colour. This has no impact on the function.
  • To avoid contamination, do not touch the inside of the parts after cleaning.
  • Store Calma in an air-permeable, clean bag/container or an air-permeable, clean paper/cloth until its next use.
  • For hygiene reasons, we recommend replacing Calma after 3 months.

Before using for the first time

  • Disassemble Calma into its individual parts (see picture 1).

  • Rinse all parts with cold water (approx. 20°C), then clean them in a gentle way with plenty of warm soapy water (approx. 30°C). Rinse again with cold water (approx. 20°C) for 10–15 seconds (see pictures 2–4).

  • Cover all parts with water and boil for 5 minutes (picture 5a).
Alternatively, you could use a Quick Clean Microwave Bag in accordance with the instructions (picture 5b).

  • Dry all parts with a clean cloth or leave to dry on a clean cloth (picture 6).
Tip: When you boil the Calma parts, you could add a tea-spoon of citric acid to avoid a build-up of lime scale. Note that minor traces of the acid might remain on the Calma parts. Use drinking-quality water to wash them off

After each use

  • Disassemble Calma into its individual parts (see picture 1).
  • Rinse all parts with cold water (approx. 20°C), then clean them in a gentle way with plenty of warm soapy water (approx. 30°C). Rinse again with cold water (approx. 20°C) for 10–15 seconds (see pictures 2–4).
  • Dry all parts with a clean cloth or leave to dry on a clean cloth (see picture 6).
  • As an alternative to the previous steps, you could clean Calma in the dishwasher. If you do so, place the parts on the top rack or in the cutlery section.

Once a day

  • Disassemble Calma into its individual parts (see picture 1).

  • Cover all parts with water and boil for 5 minutes (picture 5a).
Alternatively, you could use a Quick Clean Microwave Bag in accordance with the instructions (picture 5b).

  • Dry all parts with a clean cloth or leave to dry on a clean cloth (picture 6

Preparing for feeding

  • Wash your hands thoroughly (for approx. 1 min.) with soap and water before you touch Calma.
  • All components must be dry before use.

Steps to perform

  • Pump and store the breast milk (see the storage guidelines).

  • Assemble Calma as described below.

  • Warm the breast milk in a milk bottle with the Calma multi-lid on top.
You can use Calma in combination with any Medela bottle. Heat the milk to max. 37°C.

  • Put Calma on the bottle just before feeding.
Tip: Use the Calma multi-lid on a milk bottle for transport. For storing Calma, place the multi-lid on Calma’s base.

Assembling Calma

  • Hold the transparent silicone part. Turn the bottom edge upwards (picture 7). Do not touch the tip of the silicone part.
  • Push the silicone part (with the flipped-up edge) over the protruding part of the top. Flip down the bottom edge (pictures 8 and 9). Now put the top onto the base (10).
  • Check that all parts are correctly assembled.
  • Put Calma on the bottle with milk just before feeding (11).

Feeding – Tips and tricks

It’s normal for your baby to be a bit fussy in the beginning when introduced to Calma; it could be the first time your baby comes into contact with something other than its mother’s breast. While Calma looks perfectly normal to us, to your baby, it doesn’t smell, taste or feel like its mother’s breast. Hence you may need a little patience until your baby accepts Calma. Here are some tips and tricks developed with the support of new and experienced mums; they help your baby get used to Calma if it is a bit hesitant at first.

  • Let another adult (other than the mother) do the first feed with Calma.
Also, hold your baby in a different position than when it is feeding at the breast. This helps your baby to learn a new way to feed and makes it easier to switch from the breast to Calma and back again.

  • Dip the tip of Calma’s silicone part into the expressed breast milk before starting the feed.

  • Hold Calma at an angle of about 45 degrees to your baby’s lower lip (see picture 12).

  • To encourage your baby to open its mouth to take Calma, stimulate its lip as you would with breastfeeding.

  • When your baby opens its mouth, place Calma on the tip of its tongue.
Do not push Calma in. Your baby will take Calma in as far as it needs; just as it has learned on the breast with the nipple (pictures 13a and 13b).

  • During the entire feeding process, leave Calma in the position that your baby has chosen. To facilitate the milk flow, your baby has to create a vacuum, just like with breastfeeding (see pictures 14a and 14b). Pulling out or pushing in Calma would interrupt this process. It could also make your baby choke.

  • Don’t give up on Calma: it may take three or more separate tries for
your baby to learn how to use Calma.

  • If your baby has already used another teat, be aware that Calma works differently. With Calma, the milk flow is controlled by the interaction between your baby’s sucking behaviour and Calma’s milk flow control system. This is not like any other conventional teat – you may need a bit of patience.

Disassembling
  • Take Calma off the bottle (see picture 15).
  • Take the top with the silicone part off the base (picture 16).
  • Turn the bottom edge of the silicone part upwards. Take the silicone part off the top (picture 17).
  • Clean Calma as previously described (see pictures 1–6).

Storing and thawing breast milk

Storage guidelines for freshly expressed breast milk
(for healthy term babies)

  • Room temperature
    4−6 hours at 19 to 26°C (66 to 78°F)

  • Refrigerator 3−8 days at 4°C (39°F) or lower

  • Freezer
    6−12 months –18 to –20°C (0 to 4°F)

  • Thawed breast milk
In refrigerator for 10 h max. Do not refreeze!

  • Do not store breast milk in the door of the refrigerator. Instead choose
the coldest part of the refrigerator (at the back of the glass shelf above the vegetable compartment).

  • You can freeze expressed breast milk in milk bottles or “Pump &  Save” bags. Do not fill the bottles or bags more than ¾ full to allow space for possible expansion.

  • Label the bottles or bags with the expression date.
Do not thaw frozen breast milk or warm breast milk in a microwave/a pan of boiling water to avoid loss of vitamins, minerals and other important components and to prevent burns.

  • ln order to preserve the components of the breast milk, thaw the milk in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, hold the bottle/“Pump & Save” bag under warm water (max. 37°C).

  • Gently swirl the bottle or “Pump & Save” bag to mix any fat that has separated. Avoid shaking or stirring the milk.
