INTRODUCTION

The speaking Promed BDS-700 blood pressure monitor uses the oscillometric method of the blood pressure measurement and is thus particularly suitable for the personal blood pressure measuring and monitoring.
With the oscillometric measurement method the meter measures the flow of your blood through the upper arm artery and converts these into readable measured values. In addition to this, it is not necessary to use a stethoscope with this measurement technique. The Promed BDS-700 is an automatic blood pressure meter that can measure the systolic, diastolic pressure and pulse. This device is only intended for use by adults. An intelligent control system for the pumping process ensures that the unpleasant feeling caused by incorrect pumping is reduced and shortens the measuring time. In this way, the useful life of the arm cuff is substantially extended. Each measurement result is displayed on the screen and automatically saved.
60 memory spaces are available for this. The Promed BDS-700 possesses a WHO (World Health Organisation) blood pressure classification index with which you can interpret the measured values more easily. The voice output guides you through all steps during measurement and announces the measured values afterwards.

What is irregular heartbeat?
The Promed BDS-700 blood pressure meter can measure blood pressure and pulse even in the event of an irregular heartbeat. An irregular heartbeat is defined as a heartbeat that differs by at least 25% from the average of all the heartbeats during the blood pressure measurement. It is important that you sit still and relaxed during the measurement and do not speak.

Note:
If the symbol for irregular heartbeat is frequently displayed during measurement, we strongly recommend you to consult your physician as an arrhythmia is possible here.
The device displays an irregular heartbeat if one of the following conditions is fulfilled:

  1. The coefficient of variation (CV) of the pulse duration > 25%.
  2. The difference of the subsequent pulses * 0,14s and the number of the measured pulse is more than 53% of the total number of the pulses.

What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries. Systolic pressure occurs when the heart contracts. Diastolic pressure occurs when the heart expands.
Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The natural blood pressure of a person is represented by blood pressure at rest. This is obtained by measuring blood pressure in the morning before getting up.

What is high blood pressure and how can this be controlled?
High blood pressure is abnormally high arterial blood pressure which, if it remains uncontrolled, can cause many health problems such as stroke and heart attack. High blood pressure can be regulated by means of lifestyle, the avoidance of stress and medication under medical supervision. In order to prevent high blood pressure or keep it under control, the following principles should be adhered to:
• do not smoke
• regularly do a sport
• eat less salt and fat
• go to the doctor regularly
• keep to the correct weight

Why should one measure one’s blood pressure at home?
Visiting a clinic or doctor’s practice can lead to nervousness and thus produce increased blood pressure The measured values can be 25 to 30 mmHg higher than in a measurement at home. Measuring at home reduces the effects of other influences on the blood pressure measurement and thus supplements the measurements taken at the doctors and show the course of blood pressure more accurately and completely.

The blood pressure classification index of the WHO
Standards for assessing high blood pressure, without taking age into account, have been specified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in accordance with the following table.

Blood pressure level| Systol| Diastol (mmHg)| Colour| Recommendations
---|---|---|---|---
Grade 3| Sever hypertension| ≥180| ≥110| red| Repeat the measurement after a short waiting period / after 1 minute. If the result is confirmed, you have a severe hypertension and have to check your blood pressure at least once a day. We strongly recommend you to consult a physician.
Grade 2| Moderate blood pressure| 160 ~ 179| 100 ~ 109| Orange| Repeat the measurement after a short waiting period. If the result is confirmed, you have a moderate hypertension and have to check your blood pressure several times per week.
Grade 1| Slight blood pressure| 140 ~ 159| 90 ~ 99| Yellow| Repeat the measurement after a short waiting period. If the result is confirmed, you have a slight hypertension and have to check your blood pressure several times per month.
High-normal| 130 ~ 139| 85 ~ 89| Green| Your blood pressure is slightly increased. It is recommended to seek advice regarding changes in lifestyle and to check the blood pressure regularly.
Normal| 120 ~ 129| 80 ~ 84| Green|
Optimal| < 120| < 80| Green

OPERATING THE DEVICE

  • When you do not press a button for more than 1 minute, the Promed BDS-700 automatically turns off and switches to the time mode. No entries are stored.
Setting the voice output and volume

When the Promed BDS-700 is in the time mode, you can switch to the language setting mode by pressing the Memory button (B) for a longer time. Hold the button down until the desired language sounds and is shown on the display (L1 = German, L2 = English, L3 = Spanish, L4 = Dutch, L5 = French, L6 = Italian, L7 = Portuguese, L0 = no voice output). By releasing and pressing the Memory button (B) again the desired language is selected.
If you hold down the Memory button (B) , the volume of the voice announcement can bet set. This is shown by a changing bar display on the left side of the display. When you have set the desired volume, store it by releasing the Memory button (B).

Before the measurement
Before you carry out a blood pressure measurement you should remain entirely calm for 5 – 10 minutes, not eat, not drink any alcohol, not smoke, not do any sport and not bathe. All of these factors influence the measurement result. Remove items of clothing that are tight on your upper arm. Always measure on the same arm (normally left). Carry out the measurement regularly at the same time of day, because blood pressure changes during the day.

Factors that can lead to incorrect measurements
Everything that supports the arm during measurement can increase the blood pressure. Make sure that you are in a comfortable position and do not move your arm during the measurement. If necessary, you can place a cushion under the arm to be measured. If the arm artery is lower or higher than the heart this will lead to an incorrect measurement result.

Note:
Only use manufacturer-approved and clinically approved cuffs. A loose cuff or a defective cuff with an exposed bladder leads to wrong measured values.
In the event of repeated measurements, blood is accumulated in the arm arteries which may result in wrong measured values. Consecutive blood pressure measurements should be repeated after a waiting period of 1 minute at the earliest. Otherwise, this may lead to ecchymoses (bleeding into the skin). It is important to hold the arm upwards in order to ensure that the accumulated blood can drain.

Putting on the arm cuff
  1. Place the arm cuff flat on a table with the hook and loop side facing down. Pass the end of the arm cuff through the metal loop so that a circle is formed. The hook and loop fastener is now visible from the outside.
  2. Push the arm cuff over the left upper arm so that the tube lies in the direction of the lower arm.
  3. Push the arm cuff over the arm as shown. Make sure that the lower edge of the arm cuff lies about 2 to 3 cm above the elbow and the rubber tube of the arm cuff lies on the inner side of the arm.
  4. Pull on the free end of the arm cuff and close the arm cuff using the hook and loop fastener.
  5. The arm cuff should now be tight on your upper arm, so that 2 fingers fit between the arm cuff and upper arm. Each item of clothing that is tight on the arm must be removed.
  6. Fasten the arm cuff with the hook and loop fastener in such a way that it fits comfortably and not too tightly. Lay your arm on a table (palm upward), so that the arm cuff is at the same height as the heart. Make sure that the tube is not kinked.
  7. Lying blood pressure measurement

To measure the blood pressure in a lying position, lay on your back and stretch out your arm where the measurement is to be carried out, with the palm facing upwards next to you. Ensure that the cuff is at heart level.

Please note:

  1. If it is not possible to put the arm cuff on the left arm, it can also be placed on the right side. All measurements should, however, be carried out on the same arm.
  2. Ensure that the used cuff has the right size according to your arm.
  3. Do not move your arm, the device or the rubber tube of the cuff during measurement.
  4. Prior to a measurement, relax for 5 minutes.
  5. Please keep the cuff clean. If the cuff becomes dirty, remove it from the device and clean it manually with a mild cleaning agent and rinse it with cold water. Never dry the cuff in a dryer or iron it. We recommend to clean the cuff after 200 measurements at the latest.
  6. Never use the cuff on an arm with an inflammation, acute disease, infections of the skin or a wound.
Measurement

As soon as the cuff is suitably positioned, you can start the measurement.

  • Now press the Start/Stop button (A) in order to start the measurement.
The device starts with a self-test where all display symbols are shown on the display and a signal tone sounds.

  • If measured values have already been stored, the last measured value is displayed briefly. When the device is used for the first time and thus there are not measured values stored yet or if all measured values have been deleted, the value “0” is shown here.

  • When the voice output is activated, this will guide you through the measurement.

  • The device automatically starts with inflating the cuff.

  • As soon as the device has built up sufficient pressure within the cuff, it automatically stops inflating and starts deflating the air. The actual measuring process starts.

  • As soon as the device can measure a pulse beat, this is indicated by a flashing pulse beat display (7).

  • When the measurement is completed, the systolic and the diastolic pressure as well as the measured pulse frequency are displayed and stored. Furthermore, the measurement result, with regard to the WHO scale, is shown on the blood pressure analysis display (11) and automatically stored in the device. Now the cuff allows the residual air escape from the system until it is completely empty.

  • When the voice output is activated, the device will announce the measurement results and the classification according to the WHO scale.

  • When the device is not used for more than one minute, it switches off automatically.

Note:
When the device determines during inflating that the pressure is not sufficient, it automatically starts a new inflating process.

Note:
If the device does not stop inflating, press the Start/Stop button (A) which leads to an interruption of the measurement and the immediate reduction of the cuff pressure.

Note:
If it is necessary to abort the measurement for whatever reason (e.g. Discomfort), this is possible by pressing the Start/Stop button (A) at any time. This interrupts the measurement and immediately reduces the cuff pressure.

Using the memory function
This device has a memory for the storage of 60 measurements. Each time a measurement is completed, the device automatically stores the blood pressure as well as the pulse frequency. If 60 data sets have already been stored, the oldest measured values are replaced by the new ones.

Reading the measured values
  • By pressing the Memory button (B) you enter the memory menu.
  • If no measured values are stored, the display only shows date and time. Otherwise, the display shows the average of the last measured value.
  • By pressing the Memory button (B) again you can read the individual measured values (the last value is displayed first, the first value is displayed last).
  • When the voice output is activated, the device will announce the stored measurement results and the classification according to the WHO scale.
  • To exit the memory menu, press the Start/Stop button (A).
  • When the device is in the memory mode and is not used for more than 2 minutes, it automatically switches off.
Deleting measured values
  • By pressing the Memory button (B) you enter the memory menu.
  • To delete all measured values, hold down the Memory button (B) for at least 10 seconds. The device confirms the deletion with a signal tone. To switch off the device, press either the Start/Stop button (A) or the Memory button (B).

Note:
Deleting measured values cannot be reversed.
