Description of the unit
Please read the user manual thoroughly before using the appliance for the first time. Thank you very much for choosing the Promed 5040-SX2 manicure / pedicure device. This device may be used both by qualified specialists and by private people after they have read these instructions for use. This device is suitable for use in the areas of manicure, nail design (nail art) and pedicure (e.g.: removal of thickened skin and callus, cuticle care, nail care, treatment of thickened nails etc.) as well as for medical and cosmetic foot and nail care. The unit is also suitable for use in the area of nail techniques and nail design as well as the handling of all materials used in this area such as gel and acrylic. We, the manufacturer are not liable for any injury or damage to people or property which results from ignorance to observe these instructions.
We wish you a lot of enjoyment with your new Promed 5040-SX2 unit. We would like to familiarize you with the unit in the following sections. Please read the user manual thoroughly before using the unit for the first time.
Device information/accessories
Before operating the unit for the first time, please check that all contents have been delivered by checking whether the line voltage required for the unit (you can find this information on the specification plate) corresponds to the local power supply (operating voltage of 230 VAC connected to a correctly installed wall socket with a supply voltage of 230 VAC; operating voltage of 115 VAC connected to a correctly installed wall socket with a supply voltage of 115 VAC).
- Be careful when positioned on ground level and make sure that the ventilation slots on the rear panel are not obstructed. Also there should be sufficient distance at the back to allow sufficient air circulation. The environment should be dry and at normal temperature (do not place near to the heat sources or steam jets).
- The device Promed 5040-SX2 is suitable with the appropriate abrasive which is ideal for manicure and pedicure, especially for medical / cosmetic foot and nail care.
- The Promed 5040-SX2 unit uses a high performance motor. The electronic speed control is used to smoothly set the speed of the grinding head. The unit can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise (switchable).
- The grinding head holder is able to fixate all commercial grinding heads with standardized dental size shafts of 2.332 to 2.350 mm (0.091 – 0.093 inches). Please use only highquality grinding heads with a rounded shaft end and a maximal shaft length of 36 mm to guarantee the longest life possible for the grinding head holder! Always make sure that the grinding head does not come in contact with other objects when you lay the handpiece down. There is a risk of the shaft becoming compressed and asymmetrical. Asymmetry in the grinding head causes damage to the handpiece!
- Grinding head bits are available at your local specialist retailer or Promed (www.promed.de).
- To ensure hygienic operation, the grinding heads must be disinfected after use.
- The handpiece may only be disinfected using disinfectant wipes.
- Information about suitable disinfectants and products can be obtained from Promed (e.g. for abrasives Promed PURE-ID (Art. 330810) and for the wipe disinfection Promed PURE-FD (Art. 330815)).

- By removing the foot from the pedal, the motor and the spray flow stops.
Note: Only Promed foot pedals can be used.
P. Inserting the instrument / changing the instrument
- Always switch off the motor to insert or change a milling cutter.
- The convenient quickrelease mechanism enables a change of instruments without rotating the grip sleeve (centrifugal stress). Cutters, polishers, etc. have to be inserted until the bottom of the chuck.
- Similarly, with an intended instrument change, the used cutters are easily pulled out from the adapter (shut down the engine before!)
- Use only cutters which correspond to the standardized Dental diameter (Ø 2.332 mm to 2.350 mm)!
- Never use cutters which are deformed damaged or are not concentric. We recommend the use of cutters with a maximum head diameter of 13 mm.
- Always adhere to the abrasive product recommendation (milling head diameter – recommended speed) of the device.
- At higher revolutions the run becomes irregular (vibrations in the handpiece), so the chuck, the ball bearings and the cutters can be damaged.
- When in doubt for the speed information, always comply with the speed given by the manufacturer.
Q. By pressing the operating hours indicator button (J), the total
operating time of the device is shown on the display. To deactivate this
display option, you must press the operating hours indicator button (J) again.
Note : As long as this information is displayed, all functions are
deactivated and the device does not react to any other push of a button
In case of malfunctioning:
- Check for the correct power supply.
- Make sure the unit is turned on.
- Check that the foot pedal is connected to the device correctly.
- If the problem is still not fixed, contact immediately to your service center.
Maintenance tips
A. Keep the inner parts of the handpiece as free as possible from dust
and grinding residue.
B. Remove dirt from the outer surface of the handpiece with a cloth
moistened with alcohol. Prevent moisture from entering the unit.
C. Only use grinding heads with a dental standard size of 2.332 – 2.350
mm (0.091 – 0.093 inches) and avoid using rusted or damaged grinding heads.
Their false usage may lead to excessive wear and tear in the ball bearings.
Adhere to the safe speed and the safety measures stipulated by the
manufacturer.
D. Do not expose the handpiece to strong knocks as this may damage the
ball bearings. If the handpiece should fall down, check whether the grinding
head is bent. Pay closer attention to noise and/or heat generation. Send the
unit immediately in for repair should it be damaged.
Caution : Never spray any cleaning agents/disinfectants onto the
handpiece, and onto the handpiece tip in particular.
E. Cleaning the handpiece
Apart from cleaning the collet chuck, no further maintenance is required for
the spray handpiece. The handpiece must be cleaned at least once a day
depending on its use. Wipe the handpiece and the hose using a suitable
disinfectant wipe. Clean the spray nozzle with a small brush without leaving
any moisture.
F. Instructions for cleaning the chuck:
While pushing the cutter shafts in the chuck it is possible that the dirt on the cutter dissolves and falls in the chuck. Should it occur at certain time intervals where dust accumulates so that cutter shaft is no longer pushed at the intended depth and thus the full clamping force is not guaranteed, so the chuck is cleaned as per the following information:
- The delivery contains a special spiral driller with handle to perform a simple cleaning.
- Insert the driller carefully in the chuck and rotate it clockwise while holding the hand piece with the front down. The fixed dust will come out in this way. Repeat this process several times if necessary.
