COMMISSIONING THE DEVICE

Never change the abrasive before you turn off the device or the device is in standby mode.
The device should never be operated with an intact, built-in suction bag.
The filter chamber (F) must always be closed when the device is in operation.

  • A. Before operating the appliance, check that the voltage rating on the appliance matches the local mains voltage. Then plug the mains cable into the mains socket (J) on the appliance and the mains plug into the mains socket.
  • B. Now push a new dust bag onto the suction tube in the filter chamber door, you can now insert the filter chamber door. First place on the left side and then press firmly into the plug contact on the right.
  • C. Select a suitable abrasive body. Insert the abrasive on the front hand piece to the abrasive with ceramibond (E). Once the abrasive body begins to rotate, the mechanism is locked automatically. Remove and never run an abrasive with force! Abrasives with 2,332 mm to 2,350 mm (0.091 – 0.093 inches) shank diameter fit precisely with the abrasives with ceramic bond, without you having used excessive force. Use only abrasives with a head diameter of max. 12 mm. Ensure that the large-sized dimensioned abrasives with the maximum of 10.000 rpm may be operated. At higher revolutions, the run becomes irregular and damages the chuck and (strong vibration in the hand piece) miller cutter. To remove an abrasive, please switch off the motor by switching off the device either with the power switch (A) or with the standby button (P) or switching it to the standby mode with the microswitch on the handpiece (C). Now, remove the abrasive by simply pulling it straight out.
  • D. When you switch on the device, the Promed logo and the current software version appear on the display (H) for a few seconds. Then the display changes and the last settings used are displayed.

E. Controlling the direction of rotation and speed regulation:

  1. Selecting the direction of rotation:
The preset running direction is clockwise, this is indicated on the display by the arrow pointing to the right. Pressing the clockwise/anti-clockwise rotation button (L) changes the direction of rotation to anti-clockwise. Pressing the clockwise/anti-clockwise rotation button (L) again switches the device back to clockwise rotation.
    Attention:
The direction of rotation should not be changed while the device is in operation. Changing the direction of rotation during operation exposes the motor to a very high load and may damage it.

  2. Selecting the speed:
    Attention:
The set speed must not exceed the maximum permissible speed according to the specifications of the abrasive manufacturer.
Now select the desired speed. To increase the speed, press the + button (M) and to reduce the speed press the – button (N). The set value is then displayed in two digits (H). The speed can also be set by pushing the bar display (slider function) or by tapping any desired position in the area of the speed display.
The speed range is displayed from 3 (3,000 RPM) to 40 (40,000 RPM).

F. Pause/standby function

  1. On the device:
The button (P) provides a “Start – pause – standby function”. The values set remain unchanged during the pause period. The last selected speed and running direction are displayed with a start symbol . Pressing this button again will make the device resume running with the previous settings.

  2. On the handpiece:
The same function can be triggered by actuating the microswitch (C) on the handpiece.

G. Overload protection for the handpiece motor

If the handpiece is blocked or overloaded, the speed and the suction turbine are switched off after about 3 seconds. The following error message appears on the display (H):

After pressing the “Start” button (P) on the display, this display will go out.

H. Control of the suction power

  • The suction power can be set in 6 levels (ECO/1/2/3/4/5/MAX). Pressing the button (S) increases the suction power and pressing the button (R) decreases it. The suction power can also be changed by pushing the bar display (slider function) or by tapping any desired position in the area of the suction power display. When the + and – keys are pressed continuously, the suction power stages are quickly passed through.

  • The display shows the set power value. The selected suction power is highlighted in a darker colour.

  • Note:
A suction power sufficient for most cases is already achieved with a medium setting.

  • Note:
The suction air stream serves at the same time as cooling for the handpiece motor. When the device is in operation, the suction runs permanently, at least on the lowest setting. The suction cannot be switched off!

  • Note:
If the suction system is defective, the device must not be used anymore!

I. Temperature fuse of the suction turbine

If the suction turbine does not receive sufficient cooling and the air temperature in the suction turbine housing exceeds 80 °C, the suction turbine and the handpiece are switched off. The display shows the error message “Overheating suction turbines” in red:

The device is restarted by turning the mains switch on the back of the device off and on again.

Possible reasons for an overheating of the suction turbine

  • Blockage in the suction hose or in the handpiece
  • Overfilled filter bag
  • Insufficient air circulation at the rear of the device
  • Grinding dust in the area of the turbine due to a burst dust bag or by using the device without a dust bag.

Attention:
If the reasons mentioned above can be ruled out, we recommend you to immediately send your device back for servicing!

J. Saving speed values/memory function
The selected settings for speed, suction power and running direction can be saved by pressing and holding any memory button (Q) for at least 2 seconds. For example, on M1 a low speed for large milling cutters, on M2 an average speed for medium milling cutters and on M3 a higher speed for small milling cutters.

K Changing the dust filter
Switch off the device and remove the filter chamber door. This is done by a slight pull on the extendable handle (B). Now hold the filter bag with one hand on the front and pull the hose connector out of the opening. Remove the full dust bag and replace it with a new one. The installation of a new dust bag takes place in reverse order.
Make sure that the new dust bag is not damaged (i.e. the seams and the seal on the opening are flawless).
If the suction power drops noticeably, at the latest when the filter is filled to 2/3, the filter should be replaced immediately! Only in this way is the full suction power guaranteed and overheating of the suction turbine due to insufficient air supply avoided!

  • Attention:
Only use original dust bags from Promed!

  • Attention:
The filter bag is for single use only (disposable) and must not be emptied and/or used several times. Dispose of full dust bags together with non- recyclable household waste.

  • Attention:
If a filter bag is torn during operation and if there is a lot of grinding dust in the filter chamber, under no circumstances should you continue to use the device, since otherwise the suction turbine may be damaged. In this case, immediately send the device back for servicing!

  • Attention:
If the filter is too full, there is a risk of the filter bursting! This may result in grinding dust entering the turbine and destroying it.

  • Attention:
Every day before starting work, check the condition of the filter bag (fit and filling level). Replace the filter bag according to the instructions above if necessary. Replacing the filter in good time extends the service life of the suction turbine.

  • Attention:
Never transport the device with a filled dust bag! The same applies if you store the device, do not use it for a longer period of time or want to send it in for servicing.

L. Control system for recommended dust bag replacement
The Promed 4040 is equipped with a dust bag monitoring system: The device recognises that the dust bag is full and needs to be changed, this information appears in the display:

After changing the dust bag and closing the suction chamber door / cover of the filter chamber, this notification is cleared.

M. Foot pedal (option)
A foot pedal (ON / OFF) is available as an accessory. The pedal is connected to the rear of the device at the foot pedal socket (I) .
The foot pedal (ON / OFF) can be used to activate the device, i.e. the values set in the display for speed and suction are triggered by pressing the foot pedal. Moving the foot away from the pedal stops the handpiece and the suction turbine.

Note:
When operating the foot pedal, the function of the pause button on the display (P) and on the handpiece (C) is switched off, the foot pedal always has priority.

Note:
Only Promed foot pedals can be used.

N. Changing the device fuse

The device fuse is located on the rear side of the device. Before changing the fuse, please make sure to disconnect the mains plug. To change, open the fuse carrier with a screwdriver and replace the fine-wire fuse T6.3 A.

In case of malfunction:

  • Check for the correct power supply.
