How to replace an in-door ice maker on a French door
refrigerator

This refrigerator repair guide shows how to replace the ice maker assembly in a Kenmore Trio refrigerator and a LG French door refrigerator with an in-door ice maker. If the ice maker isn’t making ice, replace it with the manufacturer-approved fridge part that fits your model. Follow the step-by- step instructions below to learn how to replace the ice machine and visit our refrigerator repair help page for more repair help and troubleshooting tips.

This repair procedure works for Kenmore Trio and other Kenmore French door refrigerators, as well as LG French door refrigerators. The same basic procedure can also be used to replace in-door ice makers on some Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag French door refrigerators.

Instructions

Disconnect electrical power

Unplug the refrigerator or shut off the circuit breaker for the refrigerator. Move highly perishable food to a cooler or other cooled space. The refrigerator will be without power for about 30 minutes, which shouldn’t affect most refrigerated or frozen foods.

Remove the ice bucket

Open the ice maker compartment door to access the ice maker assembly.  Grip the handle at the bottom of the ice bin and pull it up and out of the ice compartment housing.

Tip: Refer to the installation manual for additional help with this step, if needed.

Remove the ice maker assembly

Carefully pull the refrigerator’s ice maker down slightly and flip it upside down to access the wire harness and ground wire connections.  Push in the locking tab on the wire harness and pull the wire harness out of the connection plug.

Remove the screw that secures the green ground wire to the bottom of the ice maker assembly and set the screw aside. Remove the ice maker and set it aside for disposal.

Attach the ground wire

Position the new ice maker assembly in the ice maker compartment and attach the green ground wire to the new ice maker assembly. Tighten the screw firmly.

Plug in the wire harness

Insert the wire harness into the new ice maker assembly connection plug and push it in until the locking tab snaps into the locked position.

Attach the new ice maker

Flip the ice maker assembly right side up and position it in the ice maker compartment so that the mounting holes are lined up. Insert the mounting screws and tighten them firmly.

Tip: Don’t overtighten the mounting screws. Turn the screws until they stop and then give them a reasonably firm twist to secure them.

Reinstall the ice bucket

Slant the top of the ice bin forward slightly and push the ice bin into the ice compartment. Close the compartment door and the freezer door.

Tip: Refer to the owner’s manual for additional help with this step, if needed.

Restore electrical power

Plug in the refrigerator or turn on the house circuit breaker to restore power.

Warning:  Undertaking repairs to appliances can be hazardous. Use the proper tools and safety equipment noted in the guide and follow all instructions. Don’t proceed until you’re confident that you understand all the steps and are capable of completing the repair. Some repairs should only be performed by a qualified technician.
