FILLING THE WATER TANK

  1. Unplug the espresso machine from the mains.
  2. Swing open the water tank lid (14) and grasp the handle un-derneath. Pull it upward to remove the water tank (15) clear from the appliance.
  3. Add no more than 1.7 litres (the MAX level) of drinking water to the water tank. Do not add less than 0.4 litres (the MIN level).
  4. Place the water tank back in the espresso machine. While reinserting the water tank make sure that the two hooks on the water tank engage the two hinges in the back of the espresso machine.
  5. You can also fill the water tank without removing it — move water from a container. Be care-ful not to spill water on the espresso machine. The espresso machine must be unplugged from the mains to do this safely! If you spill water on the espresso machine, leave it until completely dry before use.
CAUTION! Do not fill the water tank above the MAX level. Do not power on the espresso machine with the water tank empty or removed. Use only cold drinking water. Do not use hot water.

BEFORE FIRST USE

  1.  Remove the espresso machine from the packaging. Remove all plastic bags, fillers, safety locks and packaging labels.

  2. Inspect the espresso machine for damage which may have been caused in transport. If you suspect that the espresso machine is damaged, do not use it. Consult the seller.

  3. Verify that your power mains match the nameplate ratings of the espresso machine.

  4. To ensure the best flavour of the coffee, carry out the steaming procedure. Follow these steps:

    • Remove the water tank (15) from the espresso machine, pour about 1 litre of cold drink-ing water, and do not exceed 1.7 litres (the MAX level). Place the water tank back in the espresso machine.

    • Place the filter (16) or (17) in the filter holder (18) and attach the filter holder to its receptacle, and secure. The filter must be empty. Do not add any coffee yet.

    • Place the drip tray (13) in the drip tray seat (11) and place the drip tray grate (12) on the tray. Place an empty cup on the grate. Make sure that the steam level knob (3) is set at its the uppermost position.
CAUTION! The espresso machine does not come with any coffee cups. Use your own cups.

    • Plug the espresso machine to a mains outlet and start water heating by pressing (4). The switch LED will start flashing. Turn on the pressure switch (5). The water heater will be primed and vented of air. Once the water is hot, the hot water switch LED will be steadily on. Press the pressure switch (5): hot water will start filling the cup. When the hot water switch LED (4) starts flashing, turn off the pressure switch and empty the cup. When the hot water switch LED (4) is steadily on again, repeat. Do this 2 times more.
CAUTION! When the water pump is turned on for the first time with the pressure switch, unusual sound may be heard which will stop in approximately 30 seconds. This is the water pump being vented and it is perfectly normal.

USING THE APPLIANCE

PREHEATING THE ESPRESSO MACHINE
In order to enjoy the best coffee aroma, heat up the filter holder with the filter in it and the cup by following these steps:

  1.  Remove the water tank and fill it with cold drinking water. Do not pour in more than the MAX level or less than the MIN level. Place the water tank back in the espresso machine.
  2. Place the filter (16) or (17) in the filter holder (18) and attach the filter holder to its recepta-cle (10), and secure. Do not put coffee in the filter yet.
  3. Place the drip tray (13) in the drip tray seat (11) and the grate (12) on the tray. Put a coffee cup on the grate.
  4. Make sure that the steam level knob (3) is set at its uppermost position (closed). Plug the espresso machine to the mains.
  5. Start water heating by pressing (4). The switch LED will start flashing. Once the water is hot, the hot water switch LED will be steadily on. Press the pressure switch (5): hot water will start filling the cup. Turn off the pressure switch (5) after 20 seconds. The espresso machine, the filter holder and the filter are now preheated.
CAUTION! When the hot water switch (4) is on, its LED will alternate between flashing and a steady light. This means that the espresso machine is reheating the water to keep it at temperature.

MAKING COFFEE

  1. Preheat the espresso machine as instructed above.

  2. Detach the filter holder (18) with the filter (16) or (17). Put fine ground coffee in the filter and then press it down well with the tamper (21) so that the coffee level is smooth, well tamped and definitely slightly above the filter rim. The 1-shot filter (16) is enough for one cup of es-presso while the 2-shot filter (17) is enough for two cups of espresso.
CAUTION! Do not add more than 10 g of coffee to the 1-shot filter. Do not add more than 20 g of coffee to the 2-shot filter.

  3. Attach the filter holder with the filter and the tamped coffee to the receptacle.
CAUTION! The filter holder and the filter are hot. Touch the filter holder handle only. Handle with care. Risk of burns!

  4. Place a cup in the centre of the drip tray grate. Cups can be heated with the cup heater (2).

  5. Make sure that the espresso machine is hot enough after preheating. The (4) LED must be steadily on which means that the water is at the right temperature for brewing. If the LED is flashing, the water is reheated. Wait for it to stop flashing.
CAUTION! The espresso machine is ready for use after approx. 100 seconds from powering on. The process may take longer depending on the temperature of the water used, the ambient temperature, and atmospheric pressure.

  6. Turn on the pressure switch (5). The highly pressurized water will be forced into the filter holder with the coffee inside and leave it through the two ports at the filter holder bottom. Remember to pass the water when the (4) LED is steadily on. The full coffee aroma is only developed with the water at the right temperature.

  7.  If you installed the 2-shot filter (17), put two cups. The holes in the grate are located

  8. directly below the coffee dispensing spout.

  9. Take the cup from the espresso machine, power it off, and unplug it from the mains. Detach the filter holder. Remove the filter and immediately rinse it clean under running water and leave to dry before making another espresso.

    • CAUTION! The filter holder and its handle, the filter and the filter holder receptacle are hot. Handle with care. Risk of burns! Always hold the filter holder by the handle. Frequently empty the drip tray of water and swill.
    • CAUTION! Frequently monitor the water level in the tank. Do not let the espresso machine run without water. Do not remove the water tank while the espresso machine is powered on or brewing.
    • CAUTION! The espresso machine features automatic power-off after 30 minutes from powering on.

FROTHING MILK

The milk frothing feature helps make milk froth or heat milk for the coffee. The milk is frothed with a jet of hot steam forced under pressure from the steam jet nozzle (7). Make your coffee first, then process the milk.
CAUTION! The released steam jet is hot. Handle with care. Risk of burns!

  1. Swivel the steam jet nozzle to the right of the espresso machine by handling the steam jet rubber sleeve (8), as shown in Fig. 3. This way the nozzle can be easily put in the container with milk.

  2. Turn on the steaming switch (6) and wait until its LED is steadily on. Now, hot steam is ready.
CAUTION! The water heater is automatically turned off when the steam heater is running. This is to provide more heat for the steam.

  3. Place an empty container under the nozzle (7) and gently turn the steam level knob (3) to the left to vent residual water from the nozzle. The nozzle will blow steam with water droplets, followed by steam only. Turn the steam level knob (3) off, to the uppermost position (closed).
CAUTION! The steam jet nozzle (7) has a guard (9). The guard (9) must be installed on the nozzle when in use. Risk of burns!

  4. Put the container with milk under the nozzle (7) and im-
merse the nozzle tip in the milk. Now, gradually increase the steam level with the knob (3) while gently swirling the milk in the container. Gradually immerse the nozzle deeper in the milk.

  5. If the (6) LED starts flashing during frothing, stop the steam and wait until the LED goes stead-ily on again. In the meantime, the espresso maker reheats the steam to temperature. Finish frothing the milk before the third steam reheat cycle begins. Do not froth milk longer than one minute at a time.

  6. When finished frothing, turn off the steaming switch (6) and unplug the espresso machine from the mains.
CAUTION! Before unplugging from the mains, place a container with water under the steam jet nozzle, immerse it in the water, and flush the nozzle and its guard clean. This will prevent persistent milk stains.

ESPRESSO MAKING TIPS

  1. Use warm cups to make espresso. Heat them up with the cup heater (2). You can also quickly heat up a cup by pouring hot water out of the espresso machine (with the filter holder and a filter secured in the receptacle without any coffee). Classic espresso should be made of a blend of various types of coffee and poured into a 70 ml cup, but only up to a half of it.
  2.  When frothing milk for your cappuccino, use 100 ml of milk at a time. Pour the frothed milk into the brewed coffee. Sprinkle with a bit of cocoa powder on top. A classic cappuccino recipe requires 25 ml of espresso.
  3. For a better visual effect, make cappuccino in a transparent cup.
  4. Always thoroughly remove coffee grain residues from the filters. Even trace amounts of old coffee disrupt the taste of a fresh brew.
  5. Froth semi-skimmed or fat milk, pre-cooled in a refrigerator. Froth milk in a small diameter vessel so that the froth does not spray around. Milk can significantly increase its volume by frothing.
  6. Do not brew coffee after frothing your milk; the espresso maker will output water too hot to enjoy a good taste and aroma. Wait at least 5 minutes before brewing.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

CAUTION! Before cleaning, always unplug the espresso machine from the mains and wait until it has completely cooled down.
CAUTION! Do not immerse the espresso machine in water or other liquids!

  1. Clean the espresso machine after every use.
  2.  Clean the espresso machine housing with a damp cloth and thoroughly wipe it dry.
  3. Clean the filter holder (18) and the handle (20), the filters (16) and (17), the drip tray (13), the grate (12) and the water tank (15) in warm water with mild detergent. Next, rinse clean and thoroughly dry.
  4.  Clean the steam jet nozzle (7) after every use. Immerse the steam jet nozzle in water and turn on the steam. Next, remove the guard (9) from the steam jet nozzle and wash it in warm water, rinse it clean and dry. Reinstall afterwards.
  5. Periodically clean and inspect the operation of the tapped valve at the bottom of the water tank. Clean the poppet valve under running water and gently press it several times in the process. Inspect and periodically clean the valve seat in the housing of the espresso machine.
  6. Approximately after every 50 cups of coffee, clean the filter installed inside the filter holder receptacle (10). To clean the filter, follow these steps:
    • use a flat screwdriver (not included) to remove the screw which retains the flat, round filter inside the filter holder receptacle. Remove the spring with the orange poppet which is accessed beneath the filter.
    • Wash the filter and the poppet in lukewarm water with a detergent, rinse the parts clean with water, and leave to dry.
    • Reinstall the poppet with the spring and the filter inside the filter holder receptacle, and retain the filter with the screw. Remember to place the poppet on the spring, and then place the two parts together in the espresso machine (the poppet shall be oriented inward).
  7. Descale the espresso machine every 4 or 5 weeks. Regular descaling ensures a better taste and aroma of your coffee and extends the operating life of your espresso machine. Follow these steps for descaling:
    • Prepare a water solution of citric acid: use 1 litre of water and 4 tablespoons of citric acid. Pour the mixture into the water tank.
    • Attach the filter holder with an empty filter to the receptacle and install the drip tray with  the grate. Place an empty container on the grate.
    • Plug the espresso machine to the mains and turn on the hot water switch (4). Wait for the  water to preheat.
    • Turn on the pressure switch to pass approx. 150 ml of the mixture into the empty container.
    • Stop and wait for a moment, and repeat 3 times more. Empty the container as needed.
    • Turn on the steaming switch (6). Wait for the steam to preheat. Place an empty container under the steam jet nozzle and release hot steam for about 1 minute.
    • Discard the unused water with citric acid. Add clean drinking water to the tank.
    • Repeat the descaling process with pure water only (by passing hot water through the filter holder and venting steam) to remove residues of citric acid.
    • Remove the drip tray, turn off the espresso machine, unplug it from the mains and wait until it cools down completely.
