Introduction

The AC Junction Box Kit, with surge suppression, is an accessory for Leviton’s Structured MediaTM Center (SMC), t features one 15 Amp Industrial Grade SPD (Surge Protection Device) receptacle housed in a white metal enclosure which drops into an opening in the bottom of the SMC. The unit has several cable entry knockouts for power service connections. Leviton’s AC Power Modules and J-Box kits provide reliable surge protection. The J-Box kits and the AC Power Module are compatible with the Series 140, 280, and 420 Structured Media Centers. Choose between surge-protected and non-surge-protected options for maximum protection. EMI/RFI filtering satisfies UL 1449 standards in the surge-protected variants. Two 15-Amp duplex receptacles are included in the AC Power Modules, while one 15-Amp duplex receptacle is included in the J-Box package. Surge Protective Kit by J-Box (one duplex blue receptacle).

OPERATION

The supplied SPD receptacle provides sensitive equipment with protection from transient voltage surges. A green indicator light on the face of the unit, when continuously lit, indicates surge protection is in effect. When the indicator light is off, the receptacle is no longer providing suppression. When protection is lost an audible alarm will beep continuously. The alarm may be shut off by following the instructions on the face of the receptacle.

NOTE
The audible alarm can only be shut off once and cannot be reset.

CAUTION
ASSEMBLIES MUST BE INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE NEC AND CEC REQUIREMENTS. WHEN AN ALARM CONDITION OCCURS, SURGE PROTECTION IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT AND THE OUTLET NEEDS TO BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE OUTLET WHILE THE CIRCUIT IS ENERGIZED! ELECTRICAL WIRING SHOULD BE DONE BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN. IF THE OUTLET IS NOT REPLACED, IT WILL FUNCTION ONLY AS A CONVENTIONAL OUTLET WITHIN ITS RATING.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS––READ BEFORE INSTALLING

Carefully read all installation instructions before beginning your intended installation. If you do not understand any part of them, consult a qualified electrician. This unit must be installed and/or used in accordance with appropriate electrical codes and regulations.

WARNING

INSTALLATION

  1.  When positioning the SMC on the wall, ensure that adequate space is provided for the Junction Box Kit and any associated AC wiring.

  2.  Remove the rectangular knockout in the bottom of the SMC.

  3.  Remove a cable entry knockout (A) for electrical service to the Junction Box. User-supplied conduit fittings or cable clamps (B) are recommended to ready the cable entry holes for electrical wiring. (Figure 1)

  4.  Install electrical wiring. An independent 15 Amp circuit should be used to provide power to the Junction Box Kit.
Wire the surge suppressor receptacle as shown in Figure 2.
On the receptacle, loosen the Silver terminal screw (labeled “LINE” and “WHITE WIRE” on the back of the unit). Remove the insulation from the white (AC NEUTRAL) wire according to the “strip gauge” on the back of the device, about 1/2”, and insert the wire into either of the LINE holes marked “WHITE WIRE”. Tighten the SILVER terminal screw firmly.
On the receptacle, loosen BRASS colored terminal screw (labeled “LINE” and “HOT WIRE” on the back of the unit). Remove insulation from the black (AC LINE) wire according to the “strip gauge” on the back of the device, about 1/2”, and insert the wire into either LINE hole marked “HOT WIRE”. Tighten the BRASS terminal screw firmly.
Connect the GREEN or GREEN/YELLOW wire (with insulation stripped as with the previous wires in steps b and c) or BARE AC GROUND wire to the GREEN screw terminal on the receptacle.

  5.  Drop the Junction Box housing into the opening in the SMC. Attach the Junction Box to the SMC with the four, #6 x 3/8-inch, thread-forming screws provided. Tighten all screws securely.

  6.  Place the wired receptacle into the housing. Verify that all wiring connections are completely inside the housing, without being pinched or otherwise damaged.

  7.  Attach the receptacle to the Junction Box with the two, #6-32 X 1/2 inch screws provided.

  8.  Attach the Decora-style wallplate to the mounted receptacle, using the two provided screws.

  9.  Safety plugs are included with the unit to keep wire clippings and other foreign matter out of the outlets during installation and when outlets are not in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the dimensions of the box (not the cover)? I’m looking for a drop-in box that fits the Commercial Electronics telecom box’s knock-outs?
Use a standard size metal one gang switch/plug box with sheetrock ears, and 1/2″ kayos then use a 1/2″ pop in the plastic bushing., install with four (4) self-tapping 3/4″ metal screws.

  • Has anyone installed this outlet in an OnQ 28-inch enclosure? How was the fit?
It will fit any standard j box.

  • Does this automatically reset in the event of a surge that trips the box?
It’s a surge protector. It absorbs spikes in the line. It doesn’t actually “trip” like a GFCI.

  • How is this different from a regular outlet?
t is a surge protector outlet. Electrical equipment that is plugged into this device will be protected from surges in supplied electrical power (lightning strikes is an example). I use this device to protect my DVD player and on the load side of the outlet, I have another outlet for my tv that is mounted on the wall (like one gfci has numerous outlets it protects). Basically, this device will be used instead of a surge protector strip that plugs into a regular outlet. I have used this device in different houses for about 10 years. I can’t say it works but I can say that I have not lost any electronics.

  • Is there a cheaper alternative to this outlet that is comparable and will fit the Leviton enclosures?
Yes, you can buy a metal box such as this in the single gang opening and use an outlet of your choosing, though check your local electrical codes to ensure compliance.

  • Does the 47605-acs fit in the Leviton 47605-21e 21-inch structured media enclosure?
Yes, this power module is designed to be mounted in all of Leviton’s metal series, (47605), and plastic series, (49605), structured media enclosures.

  • Is it worth it?
My opinion is yes, this prevents electronic equipment loss from power surges and lightning strikes. Had mine for over a year. The electric company did a pole hardening project(replacing all the old poles) power went out numerous times over the course of the summer along with lightning strikes. All my electronics are fine. The real test is a bolt of a direct lightning hit,, haven’t had that yet. But I have been using them all over the house for years. I stand by this product.

  • What size are the self-tapping screws?
Not sure what you mean by self-tapping but the receptacle screws are standard 6-32 threads. Self-tapping screws usually drill bit tipped screws that I’ve seen.

  • Can the white faceplate be replaced with a standard 1-gang plate?
The outlet is a decora style that requires that type of plate.

  • Does this drop in or does it have to be installed before mounting the panel?
In my case, the panel already had the wiring under the knockout and all I had to do was remove the knockout, wire up the socket, drop it in, and secure the screws.

  • So this is used to replace a standard outlet and use the wiring already in the wall?
Yes, it can be provided you already have a grounded outlet with three wires; Hot, Neutral and Ground.
