interesting facts
The measuring principle of the diagnostic scale
This scale determines the body weight, bodyfat, body water and the percentage
of muscle according to the principle of Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA).
With this process, an imperceptible, completely safe and harmless current
enables the determination of body tissue proportions within seconds. This
measurement of electrical resistance (impedance) and the inclusion of
constants and/or individual values (age, height, gender) can be used to
determine the percentage of fat, water and muscle in the body. Muscle tissue
and water have good electrical conductivity, as the fat cells hardly conduct
the current due to their very high resistance.
Weighing correctly
If possible, always weighs yourself at the same time of day (ideally in the
morning), after going to the toilet, on an empty stomach and without clothes
to achieve comparable results. Minor deviations are normal. When you drink 1
glass of water for example a difference of 300 grams can occur. Place the
scale on a firm, flat surface; a firm floor covering is a basic requirement for
correct weight measurement.
Your scale is an accurate instrument. The human body is the hardest thing to
weigh, because it is always in motion. Therefore a 99% accuracy of the body
weight is the highest possible. Stand on the scale without moving and with
equal weight distribution on both feet!
Do not underestimate the weight of clothing and when you have just eaten or
drunken anything. Only the long-term trend counts.
before first use
Before you use the appliance for the first time, please do as follows: carefully unpack the appliance and remove all the packaging material. Keep the material (plastic bags and cardboard) out of reach of children. Check the appliance after unpacking for any damage, possible from transportation. Place the scale on a firm, flat surface. Remove the batteries from the protective packaging and insert with the correct polarity. See the diagram inside the battery compartment.
- Press the UNIT button on the back of the scale to select the correct measuring unit (kg/st/lb).
- kg = kilograms
- lb = pounds
- st = stone
- Place the scale on a flat and stable surface and wait for the scale to turn itself off.
- After all parameters have been entered, you can now measure your weight, body fat and the other data. The display will show 0,0 kg.
- Stand on the scale barefoot and let the scale perform a measuring. When you step on the scale the next time the scale will recognize you. When you step off the scale, the scale will switch off after a few seconds.
- TIP: To reset a memory position for another user perform the same steps as described above. All positions are preset.
personal data
You must enter personal user parameters in order to measure your body fat percentage and other physical data. The scale has 8 memory positions in which you and other members of your family can save and retrieve personal settings. Now you can enter the following setting:
Memory position (P) | 1 to 8 |
---|---|
Body size | 80 to 220 cm |
Age | 6 to 100 years |
Gender | male (), female () |
Sportsman or -woman |
-
Press the SET key when the display is switched off to change the setting. The first memory position P1 flashes on the display. To select the correct user, press the keys and press the SET key again to confirm.
-
After you have entered the correct user, the symbol for gender will blink. To select the gender (male, female, sportsman, sportswoman), press the keys and press the SET key again to confirm.
-
After you have entered the gender, the indication for body size (height) will blink (preset 165 cm). To set your own height press the keys and press the SET key again to confirm.
-
After you have entered your body size, the indication for age will blink (preset 30). To set the correct age (male, female, sportsman, sportswoman), press the keys and press the SET key again to confirm.
weigh only
The scale has a step-on function. Step barefoot onto the scale. Stand still with your weight distributed evenly on both legs. The scale will start measuring your weight immediately and a short time later will display your weight. When you step off the scale it will turn off after a few seconds.
body analysis
When you stay on the scale after it displayed your weight, the scale will
automatically perform a body analysis. The scale can identify users according
to the weight.
Important: When using the analysis function, make sure there is no
contact between your feet, legs, calves or thighs. Otherwise the measurement
will not be performed correctly. After the weight is stable, the “0” signal
moves from left to right for two times, and then shows the data.
The scale is measuring the bodyfat, -water, etc. The scale can identify a person by their weight. If it detects more users with a similar weight, it will display the relative user positions. Use the keys to choose the right user. Stay on the scale to complete the measurement. The scale will now display the results:
Bodyfat, bodywater and muscle and your bone mass will be shown in kilograms.
To give you the opportunity to see all the results, the scale will show them
three times before it turns off:
- weight
- bodyfat
- bodywater
- bodymuscle
- bone mass
If you don’t choose a user or when the scale can’t identify you, it will only show your weight and then turn off.
evaluation of the results
The percentage of bodyfat represents the in terms of percentage part of the
complete body weight. There is no real advise for this value, because it
depends on gender and age. Bodyfat is very important for your body, to ensure
good functioning. It protects organs, hinges, regulates the body temperature,
stores vitamins and acts as a reserve for the body. Females need a bodyfat
percentage between 10% and 13%. Males need a bodyfat percentage between 2% and
5%, with exception of sports people. The following body fat percentages are
guide values (contact your physician for further information).
Male
age | low | normal | high | very high |
---|---|---|---|---|
10-16 | < 10 | 10 – 18 | 19 – 23 | > 23 |
17-39 | < 12 | 12 – 20 | 21 – 25 | > 25 |
40-55 | < 13 | 13 – 21 | 22 – 26 | > 26 |
56-100 | < 14 | 14 – 22 | 23 – 27 | > 27 |
Female
age | low | normal | high | very high |
---|---|---|---|---|
10-16 | < 18 | 18-28 | 29-35 | > 35 |
17-39 | < 20 | 20-32 | 33-38 | > 38 |
40-55 | < 23 | 23-35 | 36-41 | > 41 |
56-100 | < 24 | 24-36 | 37-42 | > 42 |
- A lower value is often found in athletes. Depending on the type of sports, training intensity and physical constitution, values may result which are below the recommended values states. It should, however, be noted that there could be a danger to health in the case of extremely low values.
- A large part of the human body contains water. This bodywater can be found through the entire body. About 60% of the bodymass consists of water with men. With women this is about 55% (caused by a higher bodyfat percentage).
The body water percentage is normally within the following ranges:
Male
age | poor | good | very good |
---|---|---|---|
10 – 15 | < 58 | 58.1 – 72 | > 72 |
16 – 30 | < 53 | 53.1 – 67 | > 67 |
31 – 60 | < 47 | 47.1 – 61 | > 61 |
61 – 100 | < 42 | 42.1 – 56 | > 56 |
female
age | poor | good | very good |
---|---|---|---|
10 – 15 | < 57 | 57.1 – 67 | > 67 |
16 – 30 | < 47 | 47.1 – 57 | > 57 |
31 – 60 | < 42 | 42.1 – 52 | > 52 |
61 – 100 | < 37 | 37.1 – 47 | > 47 |
Body fat contains relatively little water. Therefore persons with a high body
fat percentage have body water percentages below the recommended values. With
endurance athletes, however, the recommended values could be exceeded due to
low fat percentages and high muscle percentage. This scale is unsuitable for
measuring body water in order to draw medical conclusions concerning age-
related water retention, for example. If necessary ask your physician.
The muscle percentage is normally within the following ranges:
age | male healthy | female healthy |
---|---|---|
10-99 | > 40 | > 34 |
Like the rest of our body, our bones are subject to the natural development,
degeneration and ageing processes. Bone mass increases rapidly in childhood
and reaches its maximum between 30 and 40 years of age. Bone mass reduces
slightly with increasing age. You can reduce this degeneration somewhat with
healthy nutrition (particularly calcium and vitamin D) and regular exercise.
With appropriate muscle building, you can also strengthen your bone structure.
Note that this scale will not show you the calcium content of your bones, but
will measure the weight of all bone constituents (organic substances,
inorganic substances and water).
The bone mass is normally within the following ranges:
male | female | |
---|---|---|
weight | < 60 |
kg
| 60-75
kg
| > 75
kg
| < 45
kg
| 45-60
kg
| > 60
kg
bonemass| 2,5 kg| 2,9 kg| 3,2 kg| 1,8 kg| 2,2 kg| 2,5 kg
Attention: Please do not confuse bone mass with bone density. Bone
density can be determined only by means of a medical examination (e.g.
computer tomography, ultrasound). It is therefore not possible to draw
conclusions concerning changes to the bones and bone hardness (e.g.
osteoporosis) using this scale.
Little influence can be exerted on bone mass, but it will vary slightly within
the influencing factors (weight, height, age, gender).\
tips
Remember that only long-term trends are important. Short-term fluctuations in
weight over a few days are usually the result of a loss of fluid.
Important when measuring body fat/body water/muscle percentage:
-
If possible, always weighs yourself at the same time of day
(ideally in the morning), after going to the toilet, on an empty stomach and without clothes to achieve comparable results. -
The measurement may only be carried out while barefoot and it is helpful if the soles of your feet are slightly damp. Completely dry soles can result in unsatisfactory results, as they have insufficient conductivity.
-
Stand still during the measurement.
-
Wait several hours after unusually strenuous activity.
-
Wait approx. 15 minutes after getting out of bed so that the water in your body can be distributed.
-
Remember that only long-term trends are important. Short-term changes in weight within a few days are usually caused by a loss of fluid. Body water plays an important role towards our general wellbeing.
The measurement is not reliable for:
- Children under approx. 10 years of age;
- Professional sporters and bodybuilders;
- Pregnant women;
- Persons with fever, undergoing dialysis, with symptoms of edema or osteoporosis;
- Persons taking cardiovascular medication.
- Persons taking vascodialating or vascoconstricting medications;
- Persons with substantial anatomical deviations in the legs relative to their total height (leg length considerably shorter or longer than usual).
incorrect measurement
If the scale detects an error during measurement, this is indicated with —-.
Possible causes of errors | Causes of error |
---|
The electrical resistance between the electrodes and the soles of your feet is
too high (e.g. with heavily cal- lused skin).| Repeat weighing barefoot.
Slightly moisten the soles of your feet if necessary. Remove the calluses on
the soles of your feet if neces- sary.
The fat percentage is outside the measurable range (less than 3% or greater
than 50%).| Repeat weighing barefoot. Slightly moisten the soles of your feet
if necessary.
The water percentage is outside the measurable range (less than 25% or greater
than 75%).| Repeat weighing barefoot. Slightly moisten the soles of your feet
if necessary.
The muscle and bone percentages are outside the measurable range – age and
gender related (less than 25% or greater than 75%).| Repeat weighing barefoot.
Slightly moisten the soles of your feet if necessary.
The maximum load-bearing capacity of 150 kg (330 lbs) was exceeded —-.| Only
weigh the maximum permissible weight.
cleaning & maintenance
The scale should be cleaned occasionally. Dirt and dust has a tendency to collect on the rubber electrodes. Always stand on the scale barefoot or wearing socks as the rubber surfaces will quickly become dirty if you wear shoes. Use a damp cloth to clean the scale. Do not use abrasive detergents and never immerse the scale in water.
- Do not use aggressive solvents or cleaning agents!
- Never immerse the scale in water or any other liquids.
- Handle the scale with care, protect the scale from impact with hard object and do not drop it.
Your scale is fitted with a change battery indicator. If the scale is operating
with batteries which are too weak, Lo appears on the display and the scale
will switch off automatically. In this case, the batteries must be exchanged
(2 x CR2032, 3V). If necessary please use a small screwdriver to remove the
batteries. Batteries can contain toxins that are harmful to health and
the environment. The used, completely drained standard and rechargeable
batteries must be disposed of in specially marked collection containers, at
toxic waste collection points or electrical product retailers. You are legally
obligated to dispose of the batteries.
Note: Batteries containing pollutants are marked with the following
symbols: Pb = Battery contains lead, Cd = Battery contains cadmium, Hg =
Battery containers mercury.
