GETTING TO KNOW YOUR HOIST
Your hoist is a powerful piece of machinery. It is important that you
understand the basics of its operation and specifications so that when you
need to use it, you can safely use it with confidence. Below is a list of the
components of your hoist and their uses.
NB: A Hoist is not the same as a winch. Hoists are for made specifically
for lifting loads in the air whilst winches are made for pulling loads
horizontally across the ground.
- Motor : The motor is powered by a 12-volt battery and provides power to the gear assembly which turns the drum and winds the wire rope in a direction.
- Hoist Drum : The hoist drum is the cylinder on which the wire rope is stored. It can be spooled In or Out by use of the remote lead switch.
- Hoist Rope : Your hoist been supplied with galvanized aircraft steel cable and is designed specifically for load capacity of the rated lift of this hoist. The cable feeds on from underneath the drum position, it is looped at one end to accept the hook.
- Gear Assembly System: The reduction gears convert the hoist motor power into extreme pulling forces.
- Braking System : Braking action is automatically applied to the hoist when the hoist motor is stopped or there is a load on the wire rope. This is achieved by a separate external mechanical brake which applies the braking action.
- Solenoid : Power flows through the switch before being directed to the hoist motor.
- Wired Remote lead Switch : The remote switch leads have a dual switch for powering in or powering out your hoist drum. The remote control allows you to stand clear of the hoist rope when the hoist is under load.
Important SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
DANGER
- DO NOT EXCEED RATED CAPACITY.
- INTERMITTENT USE ONLY – COOL BETWEEN USES.
- DO NOT use hoist for lifting/moving people or live animals.
- A minimum of five wraps of cable around the drum barrel is necessary for pulling and holding the rated load. The cable clamp is not designed to hold the load without the 5 wraps of cable around the drum. (usually marked red on the drum end of the cable)
DANGER
- Keep yourself and others a SAFE DISTANCE to the side of the cable when under tension.
- NEVER stand under or near a cable under load.
- NEVER touch or ‘jog’ a rope under load.
- NEVER swing or twist a rope under load.
DANGER
- DO NOT exceed maximum lift rating. Avoid “shock loading” by using the remote lead switch intermittently to take up the slack in the wire rope. “Shock loading” can far exceed the rated capacity for the wire rope and drum and will result in damaging hoist and brake. By doing so will void any warranty.
DANGER
NEVER cut, weld, or modify any part of the hoist or cable. By doing so will
void any warranty
DANGER
- ALWAYS use factory approved mounting hardware, components, and accessories
- NEVER weld mounting bolts.
DANGER
- Failure to read and understand these warnings may result in personal injury and/or property damage.
- Always use gloves to protect hands when handling any type or cable/ rope. Never let the cable slide through your hands.
- NEVER connect the cable back to itself.
- No modifications, alterations, or deviation to the hoist are authorized by the manufacturer and MUST NOT be made. By doing so will void any warranty.
DANGER
If the motor stalls DO NOT maintain hoisting. Hoists are designed and made for
intermittent use and should be used in conjunction with their duty cycles.
NOTICE
- The hoist and its all-derivative types are rated at rated capacity when spooling the first rope layer on the drum. Overloading can damage the hoist / motor / or wire rope.
- For loads over 70% of rated lift, we recommend the use of the pulley block / snatch block to double the wire rope line and reduce the strain. This will aid in two ways:
- It will reduce the number of rope layers on the drum and reduce the load on the wire rope by as much as 50%. When doubling the line back to the hoist, always attach to the frame or another load bearing point..
NOTICE
- Get to know your hoist before you need to use it. We recommend that you set up a few test runs to familiarize yourself with rigging techniques; the sounds your hoist makes under various loads and the way the cable spools on the drum, etc.
- INSPECT the wire rope and equipment before each use. A frayed or damaged rope must be replaced immediately. Use only manufacturer’s identical replacement rope with the exact specifications. (Ropes are not covered by any warranty offered)
- INSPECT the hoist installation and bolts to ensure that all bolts are tight before each operation or periodically.
NOTICE
- Store the remote control lead in a safe place.
- Never connect the hoist cable back to itself. This will cause cable to damage. Always use a pulley, snatch block, sling or chain of suitable strength as shown in the illustrations.
NOTICE
- Any hoist that appears to be faulty, damaged, worn, or operates abnormally MUST BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE UNTIL REPAIRED,
- REPLACED OR OVERHAULED. It is recommended that the necessary repairs ARE made by a manufacturer’s authorized repair facility ONLY.

-
Do not use inappropriate attachments to extend the length of the hoist cable.
-
WARNING
-
Do not apply any loads to the hoist when cable is fully extended past the safety mark. Keep at least 5 full wraps of cable on the spool, (Usually marked red on the hoist cable at the drum end.)
-
After moving any piece of equipment with the hoist, secure the the equipment in place. Do not rely on the hoist to hold for an extended period of time nor whilst in transport, hoists are not securing device,
-
By doing so will void any warranty
-
CAUTION
-
Examine hoist before using. Components may be affected by exposure to chemicals, salts, and rust.
-
Use gloves while handling cable.
-
WARNING
-
Never operate hoist if cable shows any signs of weakening, such as knotting or kinking. If it does you must replace immediately.
-
CAUTION
-
Always prestretch rope and respool under load before each use.
-
Respooling under load reduces the chance of binding which can damage the rope.
-
CAUTION
The hoist cable must be wound onto the drum under a load of at least 10% of the rated line pull or the outer wraps will draw into inner wraps and damage hoist cable. Before operating the hoist under load you should check proper function of the hoist by operating the directional controls. -
This will ensure that the hoist is working properly and will help prevent unintended damage and injury. Cycling the hoist prior to loading will also ensure the gears are properly aligned.
-
WARNING
Before lifting any objects, ensure the brake is operation by lowering and lifting the rope without any objects attached. -
WARNING
Stop the hoist if you hear strange noises and vibrations emitting from the gearbox. -
WARNING
Ensure that the load being lifted is well balanced and secured before starting. -
WARNING
Avoid water coming into contact with the remote. -
WARNING
Do not connect the wire rope with the grounding of welding machine -
Never try to lift a load more than the rated weight
-
Never hitch a ride on the hook, sling or load being moving.
-
Winches are not to be used for lifting or lowering people.
-
Don’t work, walk or stand under an operating winch.
-
While working, never stand under a lifting load or within the conveying area
-
Always remain in control, Never neglect the winch while actually hoisting a load.
-
Always watch out when working around the winch, there is potential danger overhead.
-
Be sure to lift a load vertically. Slack may allow wires to be caught in the drum.
-
Never allow a load to freely lower to the ground.
-
Prior to use, carry out (daily) checks on the hoist to maintain safety.
-
Never weld a load while lifting the load.
-
Do not pull the remote cord to move a load
-
Never instantly reverse-wind.
-
Be sure to stop operation immediately when the wire rope become fully slackened or you risk the rope becoming tangled on the drum.
-
Never wrap the load with the wire rope.
-
Wire rope with one or more of the following defects must be removed and replaced immediately:
-
Kinks, distortion, corrosion and signs of excessive wear or broken wires.
-
Be sure to fix a rope in the center of swivel hook
HOIST ASSEMBLY AND MOUNTING
-
Make sure that the mounting structure can withstand the full rated lift of the hoist.
-
Ensure that the hoist frame will not deform under twice the full rated load of the hoist.
WARNING
Always spool the hoist rope onto the drum in the direction specified by the drum rotation labels on the hoist. -
Your hoist is designed with a bolt pattern that is standard in this class of hoist. Proper alignment of the hoist will allow even distribution of the full rated load and reduce the chance of damaging hoist or equipment. Poor installation contributes to approx. 90% equipment or hoist damage.

Rope INSTALLATION
- Power-in and/or power-out slightly to align hole in drum to a position that is accessible for hoist rope installation.
- Disconnect the positive cable from the battery.
- Insert the hoist rope around the hoist drum from the bottom and through the slot in the drum.
- Release drum grub screw(s) located in drum cylinder and slide rope through and secure. (On selective models use a loop and wedge method to secure).
- Ensure the cable does not protrude from the drum surface and that the rope is held into place tightly and securely. With end of rope installed and secured reconnect power and carefully power-in rope evenly onto drum. Keep rope under some sort of tension at all times.
DANGER
A minimum of five wraps of cable around the drum barrel is necessary for
pulling and holding the rated load. The cable clamp is not designed to hold
the load without the 5 wraps of cable around the drum. (usually marked red on
the drum end of the cable)
Operating INSTRUCTIONS
DANGER
It is important to read ALL instructions and safety information before
installing and operating your hoist.
-
Take time to asses your situation and plan your pull.
-
Inspect mounting structure, hoist, slings and/or accessories for signs of wear and damage. Replace any damaged parts.
-
Know the weight of your load you intend to lift and never exceed your hoists rated load.
-
Connect the remote control lead to the hoist.
-
Ensure the load is directly under the hoist, and the rope is not tangled or kinked.
-
Ensure the rope spools in the right direction.
WARNING
The spooling direction may accidentally be reversed if rope is run all the way out and re-spooled in with control switch in OUT direction. -
Ensure the hook latch is functioning properly. Replace damaged hook latch before operating hoist.
-
Double check your anchors and make sure all connections are secure.
-
Inspect the wire rope. Make sure there are at least 5 wraps of wire rope around the hoist drum.(usually marked with red)\
-
Clear the area. Make sure all people, spectators are well back. Begin hoisting. Be sure that the wire rope is winding evenly and tightly around the drum. Avoid shock loading the wire rope under tension.
-
The hoist is meant for intermittent use. Under full load with a single line rig do not power in for more than 8 minutes without letting the motor cool down for a few minutes and then resume the hoisting operation.
DANGER
NEVER allow a crane to “two block.” Excess loads can create undetectable damage, which may cause the hoist to fail even when lifting loads within its rated capacity.. -
Once the load is secure – Release the tension and disconnect the hook from the load. The hoist is NOT designed as securing device and should NEVER hold a suspending load or used as securing device whilst in transport, hoist cable MUST be released when equipment is secure. Failure to follow these instructions will damage the brake and hoist and void any warranty.
-
Rewind the wire rope under load. Make sure that any wire already on the drum has spooled tightly and neatly. If not, draw out the wire and re-spool from the point where the rope is tight.
-
Keep your hands clear of the hoist drum as the wire rope is being drawn in.
-
Disconnect the remote control lead and store in a clean, dry place.
-
Clean and inspect connections and mounting hardware for next hoisting operation.
MAINTENANCE
- Periodically check the tightness of mounting bolts and electrical connections. Remove all dirt or corrosion and always keep clean.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the gear box. Repairs should be done by the manufacturer or an authorized repair center.
- The gear box has been lubricated using a high temperature lithium grease and is sealed at the factory. No internal lubrication is required.
Replacing THE WIRE Rope
If the wire rope has become worn or is beginning to show signs of fraying, it must be replaced before being used again.
- Extend cable to its full length. Note how the existing cable is connected to the drum.
- Remove old cable assembly and attach new one as the old cable connected to the drum. Insert the end of the new rope and secure the screw.
- Ensure that the new cable wraps in the same rotation direction as the old one. The cable should exit the drum from the bottom, under the drum. (Underwind).
- Hoist cable onto drum, first five wraps being careful not to allow kinking, then hoist cable must be wound onto the drum under a load of at least 10% rated line pull.
WARNING
Only replace the wire rope with the identical replacement part recommended by the manufacturer. Steel or synthetic ropes are NOT covered by any warranty offer and are sole responsibility of the owner or user to maintain and replace if necessary.
