  • Instruction, Repairing Appliances Containing R 290
  1. Checking the area

    • Before beginning work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks are necessary to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimized.
    • For repair to the refrigerating system, the following precautions shall be completed before conducting work on the system.
  2. Work procedure

    • Work must be carried out according to a verified procedure to minimize the risk of flammable gas or vapor being present while the work is being performed.
  3. General work area

    • All maintenance staff and others working in the local area shall be instructed on the nature of the work being carried out. Work in confined spaces shall be avoided.
  4. Checking for the presence of refrigerant

    • The area shall be checked with an appropriate refrigerant detector before and during work, to ensure the technician is aware of potentially toxic or flammable atmospheres.
    • Ensure that the leak detection equipment being used is suitable for use with all applicable refrigerants, i.e. nonsparking, adequately sealed or intrinsically safe.
  5. Presence of a fire extinguisher

    • If any hot work is to be conducted on the refrigerating equipment or any associated parts, appropriate fire extinguishing equipment shall be available to hand. Have a dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher adjacent to the charging area.
  6. No ignition sources

    • No person carrying out work about a refrigerating system that involves exposing any pipe work shall use any sources of ignition, in such a manner that it may lead to the risk of fire or explosion.
    • All possible ignition sources, including cigarette smoking, should be kept sufficiently far away from the site of installation, repair, removal, and disposal, during which refrigerant can be released into the surrounding space.
    • Before work takes place, the area around the equipment is to be surveyed to make sure that there are no flammable hazards or ignition risks. “No Smoking” signs shall be displayed.
  7. Ventilated area

    • Ensure that the area is outdoors or that it is adequately ventilated before breaking into the system or conducting any hot work. A degree of ventilation shall continue during the period that the work is carried out.
    • The ventilation should safely disperse any released refrigerant and preferably expel it externally into the atmosphere.
    • Checks to the refrigerating equipment
    • Where electrical components are being changed, they shall be fit for the purpose and to the correct specification.
    • At all times the manufacturer’s maintenance and service guidelines shall be followed. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer’s technical department for assistance.
  8. The following checks shall be applied to installations using flammable refrigerants:

    • the actual refrigerant charge is per the room size within which the refrigerant-containing parts are installed;
    • the ventilation machinery and outlets are operating adequately and are not obstructed; marking the equipment continues to be visible and legible. Markings and signs that are illegible shall be corrected; refrigerating pipes or components are installed in a position where they are unlikely to be exposed to any substance that may corrode refrigerant-containing components unless the components are constructed of materials that are inherently resistant to being corroded or are suitably protected against being so corroded.
  9. Checks to electrical devices

    • Repair and maintenance of electrical components shall include initial safety checks and component inspection procedures. If a fault exists that could compromise safety, then no electrical supply shall be connected to the circuit until it is satisfactorily dealt with. If the fault cannot be corrected immediately but it is necessary to continue operation, an adequate temporary solution shall be used. This shall be reported to the owner of the equipment so all parties are advised.
    • Initial safety checks shall include:
    • that capacitors are discharged: this shall be done safely to avoid the possibility of sparking;
    • that no live electrical components and wiring are exposed while charging, recovering, or purging the system; that there is continuity of earth bonding.
  10. Repairs to sealed components

    • During repairs to sealed components, all electrical supplies shall be disconnected from the equipment being worked upon before any removal of sealed covers, etc. If it is necessary to have an electrical supply to equipment during servicing, then a permanently operating form of leak detection shall be located at the most critical point to warn of a potentially hazardous situation.
      Particular attention shall be paid to the following to ensure that by working on electrical components, the casing is not altered in such a way that the level of protection is affected. This shall include damage to cables, excessive number of connections, terminals not made to original specification, damage to seals, incorrect fitting of glands, etc.

    • Ensure that the apparatus is mounted securely.

    • Ensure that seals or sealing materials have not degraded to the point that they no longer serve the purpose of preventing the ingress of flammable atmospheres. Replacement parts shall be under the manufacturer’s specifications.

  11. Repair to intrinsically safe components

    • Do not apply any permanent inductive or capacitance loads to the circuit without ensuring that this will not exceed the permissible voltage and current permitted for the equipment in use.
    • Intrinsically safe components are the only types that can be worked on while living in the presence of a flammable atmosphere. The test apparatus shall be at the correct rating.
    • Replace components only with parts specified by the manufacturer. Other parts may result in the ignition of refrigerant in the atmosphere from a leak.
  12. Cabling

    • Check that cabling will not be subject to wear, corrosion, excessive pressure, vibration, sharp edges, or any other adverse environmental effects.
    • The check shall also take into account the effects of aging or continual vibration from sources such as compressors or fans.
  13. Detection of flammable refrigerants

    • Under no circumstances shall potential sources of ignition be used in the search for or detection of refrigerant leaks. A halide torch (or any other detector using a naked flame) shall not be used.
  14. Removal and evacuation

    • When breaking into the refrigerant circuit to make repairs – or for any other purpose – conventional procedures shall be used. However, for flammable refrigerants best practice must be followed since flammability is a consideration.
    • The following procedure shall be adhered to:
    • remove refrigerant;
    • purge the circuit with inert gas;
    • evacuate;
    • purge with inert gas;
    • open the circuit by cutting or brazing.
    • The refrigerant charge shall be recovered into the correct recovery cylinders. For appliances containing flammable refrigerants, the system shall be purged with oxygen-free nitrogen to render the appliance safe for flammable refrigerants.
    • This process may need to be repeated several times. Compressed air or oxygen shall not be used for purging refrigerant systems.
    • For appliances containing flammable refrigerants, refrigerant purging shall be achieved by breaking the vacuum in the system with oxygen free nitrogen and continuing to fill until the working pressure is achieved, then venting to the atmosphere, and finally pulling down to a vacuum. This process shall be repeated until no refrigerant is within the system. When the final oxygen-free nitrogen charge is used, the system shall be vented down to atmospheric pressure to enable work to take place. This operation is vital if brazing operations on the pipework are to take place.
    • Ensure that the outlet for the vacuum pump is not close to any potential ignition sources and that ventilation is available.
  15. Charging procedures

    • In addition to conventional charging procedures, the following requirements shall be followed.
    • Ensure that contamination of different refrigerants does not occur when using charging equipment.
    • Hoses or lines shall be as short as possible to minimize the amount of refrigerant contained in them.
    • Cylinders shall be kept in an appropriate position according to the instructions.
    • Ensure that the refrigerating system is earthed before charging the system with refrigerant.
    • Label the system when charging is complete (if not already).
    • Extreme care shall be taken not to overfill the refrigerating system.
    • Before recharging the system, it shall be pressure tested with the appropriate purging gas.
    • The system shall be leak tested on completion of charging but before commissioning. A follow-up leak test shall be carried out before leaving the site.
  16. Decommissioning

    • Before carrying out this procedure, the technician must be completely familiar with the equipment and all its details. It is recommended good practice that all refrigerants are recovered safely.
    • Before the task is carried out, an oil and refrigerant sample shall be taken in case analysis is required prior to the reuse of the recovered refrigerant. Electrical power must be available before the task is commenced.
    • a ) Become familiar with the equipment and its operation.
    • b ) Isolate system electrically.
    • c ) Before attempting the procedure, ensure that:
    • mechanical handling equipment is available, if required, for handling refrigerant cylinders;
    • all personal protective equipment is available and being used correctly;
    • the recovery process is supervised at all times by a competent person;
    • recovery equipment and cylinders conform to the appropriate standards.
    • d ) Pump down the refrigerant system, if possible.
    • e ) If a vacuum is not possible, make a manifold so that refrigerant can be removed from various parts of the system.
    • f ) Make sure that the cylinder is situated on the scales before recovery takes place.
    • g ) Start the recovery machine and operate it under instructions.
    • h ) Do not overfill cylinders (no more than 80 % volume liquid charge).
    • I) Do not exceed the maximum working pressure of the cylinder, even temporarily.
    • j ) When the cylinders have been filled correctly and the process completed, make sure that the cylinders and the equipment are removed from the site promptly and all isolation valves on the equipment are closed off.
    • k ) Recovered refrigerant shall not be charged into another refrigerating system unless it has been cleaned and checked.
  17. Labeling

    • Equipment shall be labelled stating that it has been decommissioned and emptied of refrigerant. The label shall be dated and signed.
    • For appliances containing flammable refrigerants, ensure that there are labels on the equipment stating the equipment contains flammable refrigerant.
  18. Recovery

    • When removing refrigerant from a system, either for servicing or decommissioning, it is recommended good practice that all refrigerants are removed safely.
    • When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, ensure that only appropriate refrigerant recovery cylinders are employed. Ensure that the correct number of cylinders for holding the total system charge is available.
    • All cylinders to be used are designated for the recovered refrigerant and labeled for that refrigerant (i.e. special cylinders for the recovery of refrigerant).
    • Cylinders shall be complete with pressure relief valves and associated shutoff valves in good working order. Empty recovery cylinders are evacuated and, if possible, cooled before recovery occurs.
    • The recovery equipment shall be in good working order with a set of instructions concerning the equipment that is at hand and shall be suitable for the recovery of all appropriate refrigerants including, when applicable, flammable refrigerants.
    • In addition, a set of calibrated weighing scales shall be available and in good working order. Hoses shall be complete with leak-free disconnect couplings and in good condition.
    • Before using the recovery machine, check that it is in satisfactory working order, has been properly maintained, and that any associated electrical components are sealed to prevent ignition in the event of a refrigerant release.
    • Consult the manufacturer if in doubt.
    • The recovered refrigerant shall be returned to the refrigerant supplier in the correct recovery cylinder, and the relevant waste transfer note arranged.
    • Do not mix refrigerants in recovery units especially not in cylinders.
    • If compressors or compressor oils are to be removed, ensure that they have been evacuated to an acceptable level to make certain that flammable refrigerant does not remain within the lubricant.
    • The evacuation process shall be carried out prior to returning the compressor to the suppliers. Only electric heating of the compressor body shall be employed to accelerate this process.
    • When oil is drained from a system, it shall be carried out safely.

PUTTING INTO OPERATION

  • As shown in Figure 3.1, leave a free space of min. 50 cm on each side of the device.
  • The room temperature should be between 12 °C and 32 °C. Carefully remove the adhesive tape securing the air deflector slats before use.

Connecting the air outlet tube

  • So that the device can work efficiently, its air should be led out of the room. Connect the air outlet tube to the back of the device.
  • At the other end of the tube, the reducer adapter is attached (component 6) that can be used in the case of parallel window openings as shown in Figure 3.3.SOMOGYI-ELEKTRONIC-ACH12000-Cooling-Heating-Mobile-Air-Conditioner-FIG-3
  • It is very important to use the shortest possible tube length. It is recommended to lead the tube horizontally.
  • If necessary, the maximum deviation from the horizontal can be 45°. (Figure 3.2)
  • Do not lead the tube according to the crossed-out picture in Figure 3.2, because that solution can result in operating trouble. The length of the tube is specified for this device (max. 150 cm), therefore do not extend the tube! Connecting the water outlet pipe
  • Mainly when the device has been working in drying mode (DRY), vapor or water can condense from the air and accumulate in the built-in tank of the device. When the water tank is full, the code „FL” appears on the display. If this happens, switch off and disconnect the unit and roll it to a place where the water can be drained through the draining stud. After emptying the tank replace the cap and put the unit into operation again.
  • You can also choose continuous water drainage. To do so connect the water outlet pipe to the water draining stud. Water condensed during operation will leave via this pipe.

Remote controller

  • Put two 1.5 V (AAA) batteries in the remote controller. Make sure to position the batteries per their right polarity! Avoid the use of batteries of different makes and/or charging levels together!

Connecting to the mains

  • Connect the device to a standard 230 V / 50 Hz grounded wall socket. Now the device is ready for operation.

CLEANING, MAINTENANCE

For optimum operation clean the device at a frequency depending on the extent of its contamination, but at least at two-week intervals, and also clean the air filters at the air inlet openings.

  1. Before cleaning switch off and disconnect the unit by pulling out the connecting plug!
  2. Using a damp cloth clean the external surfaces. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents! No water is allowed to get inside the device and in contact with the electrical components!
  3. First, tilt the large air filter backward as shown in Figure 4, and then pull the two small air filters on the right and left side out of the device. Clean them using lukewarm water. After drying put the filters back in their position.
  4. Only now can the fan be placed back in operation again!
  • If you do not intend to use the device for a longer time, disconnect it and drain the water through the water drain stud.
