Kendal FC25 Carry on Folding Controller Instruction Manual

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION

Important: Lay the controller on a flat surface before unfolding. To prevent damage, do not unfold the controller on an uneven surface.

How to unfold your Carry-on Folding Controller 25:

STEP 1: Place the controller with the hinge facing away from you and the power button, USB socket etc. upside-down.
STEP 2: Lift the top section up and away from you.
STEP 3: Lay the top section flat to your playing surface.

How to use the built-in kick stand:

STEP 1: Ensure your controller is in the folded position. Place the controller with the hinge facing away from you and the power button, USB socket etc. upside-down.
STEP 2: The top section is split in two. Pull out the section with the Carry-on logo using the indents on the side of the controller. This is the built-in kickstand.

STEP 3: Fully extend the kickstand and lift the whole top section up and away from you.
STEP 4: Position the kickstand on your playing surface. The top section should now rest at an angle.

GETTING STARTED

  1. Press the POWER button() for 3 seconds to power up your controller. The screen (6) will illuminate when the controller is on. If your controller does not power up, connect it to a suitable power source to charge the battery using the USB-C socket (12). The typical charging time from zero charge is 2 hours.
NOTE: Use your computer’s USB port or a suitable 5V DC power supply at a maximum of 1A for safe charging of the internal battery.

  2. Connect a MIDI compatible device using either the USB-C socket (12), Bluetooth® (see Bluetooth pairing instructions) or the 3.5mm MIDI OUT jack (10) on the back of the controller.

  3. Alternatively, use the PITCH OUT, GATE OUT and MOD OUT to connect to and control an analogue synthesiser.

SETTING UP

  1. PITCH and MOD. Sliders: Use the sliders to adjust pitch and modulation.

  2. Octave and Transposition Controls: Adjust the current octave up
or down and transpose the keyboard using these buttons. Holding the TRANSP, button and pressing the OCT.- button transposes the keyboard down a semitone. Holding the TRANSP. button and pressing the OCT.+ button transposes the keyboard up a semitone.

  3. SHIFT, TAP TEMPO and SUSTAIN: Holding SHIFT accesses the
secondary functions of the knobs and keys (see 8. Secondary Functions). When Arpeggiator is on, the TAP TEMPO button will light up to indicate the current BPM. Input the desired BPM for the Arpeggiator using the TAP TEMPO button. Pressing the SUSTAIN button again will toggle the sustain function off. Alternatively, holding the SUSTAIN button will activate the sustain function until the SUSTAIN button is released.

  4. Control Knobs: Use these programmable knobs to control external MIDI devices and software. While in Arpeggiator mode, holding SHIFT and adjusting the control knobs will affect the respective Arpeggiator parameter.

  5. Drum Pads: Use the drum pads to trigger MIDI notes and manipulate held notes using aftertouch by varying the pressure on the drum pads.

  6. Display: The screen displays information appropriate to the current mode. By default, it will show the current octave in normal mode and the current tempo in Arpeggiator mode. Changes to settings and parameters are also displayed here.

  7. CHORD, ARP. and Transport Controls: The CHORD function allows multiple notes to be played using a single key. Please see the user manual for more information on how to use the CHORD function.
Toggle the Arpeggiator on and off using the ARP. button (see the Arpeggiator Mode section for more information on the Arpeggiator).
The default transport control settings will be pre-mapped to most Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and MIDI devices. Set the transport controls to CC mode to assign these buttons to other external MIDI parameters. See the user manual for more information about integrating the transport controls with your DAW or MIDI device.

  8. Secondary Functions: Holding SHIFT and pressing any of the ARPEGGIATOR keys will adjust the respective arpeggiator settings. VEL CURVE cycles through 4 different velocity curves, adjusting how sensitive the keys are to dynamics.

  9. Control Outputs: Use the PITCH OUT, GATE OUT and MOD OUT to control external analogue synthesisers. When MIDI information is sent to the Folding Controller via the USB socket (12), appropriate messages will be converted to CV and passed to these outputs.

  10. MIDI OUT: Output MIDI to external MIDI devices using the 3.5mm TRS jack MIDI OUT. The default MIDI channel for the MIDI OUT is channel 1.
    11. SUSTAIN: Connect a sustain pedal to your folding controller using this port.

  11. MIDI over USB: Connect to your computer or MIDI device using the USB-C port. This port is also used to charge your Folding Controller

  12. The 9-16 button will toggle to the second page of the drum pads. When the 9-16 button is off, drum pads 18 will be active. When the 9-16 button is on, drum pads 9-16 will be active.

  13. MIDI Channel: Pressing the CH button will allow the MIDI channel
to be selected using the drum pads. Drum pads 1-8 will select MIDI channels 1-8 and drum pads 9-16 will select MIDI channels 9-16. As the channel is selected, it will be displayed on the screen

  14. MIDI Channel Pressing the CH button will allow the MIDI channel to be selected using the drum pads. Drum pads 1-8 will select MIDI channels 1-8 and drum pads 9-16 will select MIDI channels 9-16. As the channel is selected, it will be displayed on the screen.

  15. CC: Pressing the CC button will allow MIDI Control Change messages to be sent using the drum pads. As default, drum pads 18 will send CC messages 16-23 and drum peds 9-16 will send CC messages 24-31.

BLUETOOTH® PAIRING

Your Carry-on Folding Controller 25 has MIDI over Bluetooth. When switched on it will automatically be in pairing mode.

To connect your mobile device to your Carry-on Folding Controller, please do not try to connect through your standard Bluetooth settings; instead connect via your chosen music app to pair with your device. Go to the Settings menu in your chosen music app to pair with your smartphone. Using Cubasis as an example, go to:

Setup – MIDI-MIDI over Bluetooth Host –

Find ‘Carry-on FC25’ in the devices list and tap to pair.

NOTE: Bluetooth performance can be greatly affected by the connected host device, interference from other wireless signals, position relative to the host device and other factors. If your connected device experiences any issues with MIDI over Bluetooth, it is recommended to use the MIDI over USB connection, where possible. Please see the online Product Handbook for further Bluetooth recommendations.

ARPEGGIATOR MODE

The Arpeggiator mode activates a sequencer. When a note is held down on the keyboard, the Arpeggiator begins playing a sequence of notes based on the held note. The notes played and how the notes are played can be adjusted using the Arpeggiator parameters.
The Arpeggiator can be sped up and slowed down using the TAP
TEMPO button to input a BPM (Beats Per Minute) tempo for the
sequence to follow.

The note duration of the Arpeggiator can be set by holding SHIFT and adjusting the A/ DIVISION control knob.

The level of swing can be set by holding SHIFT and adjusting the B/ SWING knob.
Chords can be played in Arpeggiator mode and these notes will be triggered in sequence. While holding SHIFT, selecting UP, DOWN, EXCL., INCL., ORDER, or RANDOM will change the order of the sequence played by the Arpeggiator. This can also be set by holding SHIFT and adjusting the C/ORDER knob.

While holding SHIFT, selecting RANGE- or RANGE+ will adjust the octave range of the sequence. The minimum and default for the range is 1 and the maximum setting is 4. Settings above 1 will extend/repeat the sequence into the octaves above the starting notes. This can also be set by holding SHIFT and adjusting the D / RANGE knob.

When LATCH is on, the last played group of notes will continue playing in the sequence until the next notes are played, or LATCH is turned off.
