TOOLS NEEDED
NOTE
Before proceeding, check to be sure that the hinge is the proper size. The
height of the hinge should be 7/8 inch LESS than the opening height. See the
other side of the page for cutting instructions.
STEP 1 – Mark Frame Hole Locations
- Determine the TOP of the hinge using the door and frame as a guide.
- Open the hinge and place the frame leaf flat against the surface of the frame leaving 1/8 inch gap between the top of the hinge and the frame header, and 1/16 inch gap between the edge of the hinge and the stop
- Mark hole locations on the frame using the centre punch. A centre punch mark is required to start self-drilling screws accurately.
DO NOT INSTALL THE HINGE TO THE FRAME AT THIS TIME!
STEP 2 – Mount Hinge to Door
-
Place the door leaf of the hinge against the hinge edge of the door so that the top of the hinge is flush with the top of the door and the edge of the hinge leaf is flush with the inside face of the door – for models S$305 and SS315, door edge guards must lay flat against the face of the door.
-
With the hinge held firmly in place, use # 10 x 1/2-inch self-drilling screws to fasten the leaf to a metal door, or #10 x 1-inch wood screws to fasten the leaf to the wood door.
NOTE: Fasten top most screw first, and the bottom-most screw second making sure that the hinge is aligned correctly -
ALL HOLE LOCATIONS ON THE HINGE LEAF MUST BE FASTENED TO THE DOOR FOR PROPER OPERATION. FAILURE TO INSTALL ALL FASTENERS WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND UL FIRE LABEL LISTINGS.
STEP 3 – Mount Door to Frame
-
Move the door into an opening and align mounting holes in the frame leaf of the hinge with marks on a frame made in step 1 above.
NOTE: an angle block, jack or shim will help position the door properly. -
With the hinge and door held firmly and accurately in place, use #10 x 1/2 inch self-drilling screws to fasten the frame leaf of the hinge to the frame in marked locations
ALL HOLE LOCATIONS ON THE HINGE LEAF MUST BE FASTENED TO THE FRAME FOR PROPER OPERATION FAILURE TO INSTALL ALL FASTENERS WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND UL FIRE LABEL LISTINGS
STEP 4 – Check for Proper Operation
- Close the door and check for proper operation and clearances.
- There should be a 1/8 inch clearance between the top of the door and the bottom of the frame header, and a 1/8 inch clearance between the frame and edge of the door when the door is closed.
- Adjustments can be made by shimming the frame or door leaf of the hinge
STEP 1 – Determine Hinge Height
- Measure the height of the opening from the finished floor to the underside of the door frame header.
- Hinge height is the height of the opening MINUS 7/8 inch.
STEP 2 – Mark Hinge for Cutting
- Determine which end of the hinge will be the TOP using the door and frame as a guide.
- Open the hinge to expose the back ofthe hinge (holes are NOT countersunk).
- Measure the hinge height calculated in step 1 from the TOP of the hinge.
- Using a square, mark a line on the back of both hinge leaves and the barrel.
- DOUBLE CHECK MEASUREMENT BEFORE CUTTING!
NOTE : The cut end of the hinge must be used as BOTTOM OF HINGE ONLY!
STEP 3 – Cut Hinge
- Fold the hinge so that the cut line is visible.
- Starting on the barrel, cut through the entire hinge along the line.
- Deburr all cut edges with a file.
- Use a centre punch or heavy gauge nail on the pin in a short cut-off portion of the hinge to remove the hinge tip. SAVE HINGE TIP for use in step 5.
STEP 4 – Shorten Hinge Pin 3/4″
- Using a centre punch or heavy nail, tap on the cut surface of the hinge pin to remove the top hinge tip (Save tip for Step 5).
- Expose 1″ of the hinge pin.
- Measure and mark 3/4 inch from the end of the pin. DOUBLE-CHECK
- MEASUREMENT BEFORE CUTTING.
- Cut the pin at the mark.
STEP 5 – Insert Top & Bottom Tip
- Tap the hinge pin back into the barrel.
- Tap hinge pin tips retained from steps 3 & 4 above firmly into the top & bottom of the barrel until the shoulder sits squarely on the barrel.
NOTE both tips MUST BE INSTALLED to hold the hinge pin in position.
IMPORTANT NOTE
IF MORE THAN 6 INCHES ARE CUT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE HINGE, ADDITIONAL
MOUNTING HOLES WILL BE REQUIRED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE HINGE. USE A CUT-OFF
PIECE OF HINGE TO MARK AND PREPARE HOLE LOCATIONS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE HINGE.
