Welcome to the unit Use basic drawing techniques. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create a basic visual representation of objects or ideas. It does not relate to drawing as an art form. It applies to individuals in any context where a basic sketch or drawing of objects, ideas or layouts is required.
No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment types

In this unit, you will complete the following assessments:

  • Assessment Task 1 : Written Answers
  • Assessment Task 2 : Portfolio of drawings and project

Assessment Task 1: Written Answers

Instructions for this task:

Answer all questions below.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. list materials and tools commonly used for drawing and explain how to use them safely
  2. describe different types of drawing techniques.

Benchmark

You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

You need to have access to the following:

  • Pen and Paper
  • Access to learning materials
  • Access to the internet
  • Access to a PC and word-processing software
  • Drawing materials and equipment
    Location : Classroom/Computing Lab

Submission

Submit your responses by the due date and in accordance with the general instructions at the beginning of this unit of competency. Attach the Assessment Agreement and the Assessment cover sheet for thisassessment task. Store all your designs in one portfolio together with all documents (work samples) produced.

Assessment Task 2: Practical Project

Instructions for this task:

You are to produce three drawings for the client. Once you have decided on the ideas and completed all tasks, submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet.

Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated. Record all data, information, and sketches in your visual diary.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Identify tools, materials, and techniques required to produce drawings
  2. Use a range of basic drawing techniques to produce and refine drawings that represent objects or ideas.
  3. Clarify the purpose of drawings with the appropriate people
  4. Select appropriate tools and materials for basic drawing techniques
  5. Apply a limited range of techniques to represent objects or ideas
  6. Follow safety instructions when handling tools and materials
  7. Seek feedback on drawings from relevant people and refine drawings

Benchmark

Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 2 by the assessor to be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all tasks in full and to a high standard.

You must demonstrate that you are able to use limited techniques to complete drawings.

All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.
Location :  Classroom/Studio with equipment and materials suited to drawing.
