Maretron VDR100 Vessel Data Recorder
Introduction
This document describes how to update the complete system image on the VDR100 – Vessel Data Recorder. This procedure is necessary if upgrading from VDR100 software version 1.x.x.x or 2.x.x.x to a new version of software or recovering from an inoperable status. If the VDR100 is already at software version 3.x.x.x or newer, you may have the option of upgrading using Maretron N2KAnalyzer. Please refer to the Maretron N2KAnalyzer® User’s Manual for details.
USB Flash Drive Update Instructions
To perform this firmware upgrade on a VDR100, you will need an additional USB flash drive. This USB flash drive will be called the Upgrade USB flash drive to distinguish it from the USB flash drive normally used to record data on the VDR100, which will be referred to as the Data Recording USB flash drive. Once you have the Upgrade USB flash drive, please follow these instructions:
- The upgrade process will restore all VDR100 settings to the factory default values. If you have changed any settings on the VDR100 from the factory default settings, use N2KAnalyzer® to save the VDR100 configuration to a file, which you can use to load the settings back into the VDR100 after the upgrade. Please refer to the Maretron N2KAnalyzer® User’s Manual for details.
- Ensure that your Upgrade USB flash drive has been formatted in Windows with the FAT or FAT32 file system, has available space of at least 64 MB, and is inserted into your Windows computer.
- Download the file VDR100 System Image Installer from the VDR100 product page on the Maretron website (http://www.maretron.com/files/VDR100/VDR100 System Image Installer.exe) and execute it. When the window appears asking, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, click “Yes”.
- The installer’s “Welcome” screen will appear. Click “Next”.
- The “Select Destination Location” window will appear. Select the drive letter of the Upgrade USB Flash Drive and click “Next”.
- The “Ready to Install” window will appear. Review the settings and click “Install”.
- The “Installing” window will appear while the files are being copied to the Upgrade USB flash drive and will show you the progress of the file copy operation. This will take one or two minutes.
- Once the files have been completed, an “Information” window with a set of instructions (which are repeated in this document) will be shown. Review the instructions and click “Next” to continue.
- The “Completing” Screen will appear. You can check “Read Installation Instructions” to read (and optionally print) this document and “Eject USB Flash Drive” to prepare the Upgrade USB flash drive for removal. Click “Finish”.
- If you didn’t select the “Eject USB Flash Drive” option in the final Setup window, use Windows to safely eject the Upgrade USB flash drive. Remove the Upgrade USB flash drive from the Windows PC.
- Unplug the NMEA 2000® connector from the VDR100. This shuts off the power to the VDR100.
- Remove the Data Recording USB flash drive, if installed, from the VDR100.
- Plug the Upgrade USB flash drive into the VDR100.
- Plug the NMEA 2000® connector back into the VDR100. This restores power to the VDR100.
- The VDR100 will detect the Upgrade USB flash drive and begin applying the upgrade. This process will take about 2½ minutes. During this time, the NMEA 2000® light will be red and the Upgrade USB flash drive LED (if it has one) will blink.
- Once the upgrade process has completed, the VDR100 will restart and the NMEA 2000® light will begin blinking green, while the USB LED on the VDR100 will begin blinking the INCOMPATIBLE sequence of 6 flashes.
- Remove the Upgrade USB flash drive from the VDR100 and plug in the Data Recording USB flash drive used for recording NMEA 2000® data. The VDR100 will perform any required initialization on the Data Recording USB flash drive and will then begin recording data normally.
- If you saved the settings of the VDR100 to a file using N2KAnalyzer® earlier, use N2KAnalyzer® to load the saved settings back into the VDR100.
- NOTE: If you wish to use the same Upgrade USB flash drive to update another VDR100, please first plug it into a Windows PC and execute the “update_another_vdr100.bat” script in he root directory of the Upgrade USB flash drive to enable it to be used to update another VDR100.
