The products described in this manual are manufactured to the specifications prescribed by SCUBAPRO Research & Development team.

NEOPRENE ACCESSORIES ERGONOMICS

SCUBAPRO offers various design and thicknesses (1.5mm to 6.5mm) accessories for dry and wetsuits to meet divers needs in a wide variety of water temperatures and conditions.

MATERIAL

Your new SCUBAPRO accessory is manufactured from 100 percent pure neoprene made from Limestone. A unique solution called X-Foam, petroleum-free and the only neoprene formula that complies with the very strict P.A.H. (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) test requirements.

FIT OF ACCESSORIES

Neoprene accessories are designed to fit your body like a “second skin.” However, they must not be overly snug. Too-tight boots, gloves or hoods are uncomfortable, limit range of motion and can restrict breathing, and could cause panic. At the same time, they should not be too loose, to prevent water to pool inside, flushing away your body heat. Neck, ankle and wrist seals must be able to reduce the flow of water, but not be tight as to restrict circulation to the hands, feet and head. A restriction of blood flow to the extremities can result in a loss of feeling, nitrogen build-up and a lack of oxygen to the brain, which can cause you to lose consciousness while under water. On the other hand, too loose seals allow water to flow in and out which accelerates thermal loss.

DONNING OF ACCESSORIES

Hood: The hood might have a face seal section lined with super extensible fabric for flexibility and comfort. The warm lining will retain the warmth of your head and is also very quick drying. The air vent system allows trapped air to escape and its placement prevents outside water from entering. The neck section is designed to lay over top or under top of the neck seal on the suit for extreme protection. When adjusting the hood should be taken to ensure that it does not nestle too tightly around the head to ensure a pressure equalization under water and the neck cuff is only on the neck on the skin. It should by no means be uncomfortable against the carotid artery. If you donning the hood, please take care with longer hair. Fix your hair in this way, that it is comfortable to wear under the hood. Make sure that there are no hair at the face section.

Gloves: Depending on their strength and diving conditions, gloves are made of different materials for maximum flexibility and thermal comfort. Depending on the design, a cuff may have to be folded down, a zipper opened or a Velcro fastened to make it easier to put on. The glove must lie comfortably against the skin without any movement restrictions of the fingers. It is also important to ensure that the wrist ending is not too tight. Please take care when donning the gloves that you have enough space around you. If the glove slips you could hit and injure somebody. If your glove should have a zipper, take care that no skin or hair is inside when closing.

Boots: Depending on the design of the booties, it may be necessary to open first a Velcro or a zipper or both. As with a normal shoe, putting on must be easy. Although it should fit tight, it is important to ensure that you do not directly with the toes front abut, it does not press on the ankles and the ankle should not be too tight. Please take care when donning the boots) that you have enough space around you. If the boot slips you could hit and injure somebody. If you close the zipper, take care that no skin or hair is inside.

WARNING
BLOOD FLOW CAN BE RESTRICTED BY SEALS THAT ARE TOO TIGHT, WHICH CAN ULTIMATELY LEAD TO INJURY OR DEATH. DO NOT WEAR SEALS THAT ARE TOO TIGHT!

POSSIBLE ALLERGY RISK

A small percentage of people have an allergic reaction to natural latex or neoprene, the material from which the accessories are manufactured. This allergy can range from mild to severe skin rash and itching. It is the responsibility of the user to predetermine if she or he has latex/ or neoprene allergy, or to recognize it during use, and discontinue usage of the accessories until the problem can be rectified.

RISK ASSESMENT

Possible risks when using these accessories.

Hyper/hypothermia

Gloves, Hoods and Boots are often used in extreme temperature conditions, where there may be combinations of cold surface conditions and cold water, or hot surface conditions and cold water. It is important to know your own personal thermal safe range, to avoid overheating, or becoming chilled. While the accessories have excellent thermal protection, they do have limits and your safe & enjoyable time in the water is variable based on water temperature and condition, workload, and your own body type. Hypothermia is the cooling of the body core to unsafe levels. Hyperthermia is the overheating of the body core to unsafe levels. Hyperthermia in accessories use is most often experienced during surface intervals in hot weather, or during periods of excessive workload in warm, shallow water. Because of this, during any warm- water diving activity you need to constantly monitor your workload to prevent excessive gas consumption, fatigue, stress or overheating. On the other hand, when diving in cold water, always wear gloves, boots and a hood to minimize the risk of hypothermia. By properly protecting your body and its extremities, and by being aware of your own limitations and comfort range, you will be able to recognize a potentially dangerous situation before it’s too late. Hypothermia and hyperthermia can be harmful and possibly fatal conditions.
When choosing the right thickness of neoprene accessories, you should make sure that the same neoprene strengths (or higher) are used as for the suit used. If the variants differ, the goals for protection against cold on feet, hands or head may change to a negative result or no longer exist.

WARNING
LEARN YOUR OWN LIMITATIONS AND LEARN TO RECOGNIZE DISCOMFORT AS A DANGER SIGNAL. AVOID HYPERTHERMIA & HYPOTHERMIA AS BOTH CAN BE HARMFUL OR FATAL. MONITOR YOUR WORK RATE DURING ALL DIVING ACTIVITIES TO AVOID EXCESSIVE AIR CONSUMPTION, FATIGUE, OVER HEATING AND OTHER SYMPTOMS.

CHANGE OF BUOYANCY WITH DEPTH

All neoprene products used in scuba diving incorporate closed cell foam to provide thermal protection. Under increasing pressure as depth increases, these bubbles diminish in size, resulting in a loss of buoyancy as the diver descends.

THERMAL INSULATION LOSS AT DEPTH

The neoprene material becomes thinner under pressure (see above) and loses not only buoyancy at depth, but also some insulation value. Divers planning to spend time at greater depths must account for the diminished thermal protection at depth by wearing added protection.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Zipper

  • Slider not closed all the way. Check carefully for full closure.
  • Zip has failed – inspect for split in closed teeth.
  • Zipper material failed – can either be punctured or damaged by abrasion.
  • Foreign material caught in teeth – dirt, sand or debris are the most reasons.
  • The zipper is old, worn out, or damaged in some other way – have it replaced.

Seals

  • Seals leak for two reasons, damage or interference.
  • Check the seals for holes or tears caused by sharp objects, nails, wear & tear, or chemical damage.
  • Check there are no foreign objects presence.
  • Check they are adjusted properly and do not have folds that can create leaking channels, especially around the wrists tendons.

Damage to Fabric

  • The fabric may leak due to wear, abrasion, puncture or tearing.
  • Avoid sharp and abrasive objects such as watches and jewelry.
  • Divers exposed to corrosive chemicals must take extra care cleansing & rinsing the accessories after each exposure. Some chemicals can degrade or delaminate the materials to the point of failure.

INSPECTION BEFORE DIVING

Before EVERY dive, make sure the accessories are in good condition by checking the following:

  • No visible damage to materials anywhere on the accessories.
  • Check neoprene seals for small tears or holes.
  • Inspect zipper and Velcro for excess wear or any damage.

INSPECTION AFTER DIVING

After EVERY dive, complete all the pre-dive checks listed above, and inspect them for any possible new damage. Repair any damage immediately, or take the parts to an authorized SCUBAPRO dealer for repair.

INSPECTION INTERVALS

In addition to the checks listed above to be performed before every dive, they should be inspected and serviced by an Authorized SCUBAPRO dealer on an annual basis.

MOD OR MAXIMUM DEPTH

The European Norm EN 250 norms restricts the depth to 50 meters for recreational diving. For technical diving the MOD is well beyond the recreational diving limits.

THERMAL RESISTANCE

Materials thermal performance classes are based on their immersed thermal resistance at 1 bar and 6 bar. See the following table. It shows the CE Thermal classes for neoprene for different water temperatures.

Class A From 7°C to 12°C
Class B From 10°C to 18°C
Class C From 16°C to 24°C
Class D > 22°C

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

Before storing, inspect your accessories to make sure all components – zippers, seals and stitching – are sound and in working order, and that there’s no damage on the accessory itself. If any damage is detected, have your accessory serviced only by trained personnel and/ or a SCUBAPRO authorized dealer. Store them all in a dry, cool place (between + 5° ÷ + 20° C) and out of direct sunlight. Transport your accessory in a bag designed for SCUBA gear to avoid creating creases and excessive neoprene compression. Always clean excess dirt and sand from your hood, gloves and boots before putting it into any bag.

DISPOSAL

When that day finally arrives and you need to replace your current SCUBAPRO accessory with a brand new SCUBAPRO products, be sure to dispose of your old products according to local regulations and prescriptions.
