Application Tips
The fence voltage can be measured from any position on the fencing system and
can be used to measure the output voltage directly from the electric fencing
unit. Voltage pulses between 200 and 9,900 volts can be measured. Voltage
pulses over 10,000 are indicated with “HI”.
The tester works with a 9 volt battery (included in delivery) and switches
itself on and off.
To use the tester place it between the earth (earth post) and fence (contact
ear)
According to VDE voltage results >2000 volts are considered safe. The higher
the voltage the more effective the fencing system.
High voltages and impulses rich in energy, demand a special voltage resistant
constructed fence. Here iron posts should not be used, only in conjuction with
special insulators. Arking on insulators and iron posts causes the voltage to
go down. Therefore the power consumption rises and some voltage will go to
earth.
Voltage to the earth post
Here, heavy currents which flow back to the earth post produce at the earth
resistance a noticeable voltage working in steps.
ATTENTION: If voltage can be measured at the earth post, there are
- drains in the fencing system and
- the earth conductivity near the earth posts could be better (drill several earth posts into humid ground)
Therefore: In case of voltage at the earth post one has to elimate the conductance at the fence and the grounding has to be improved !
Damaged isolators on iron posts can also be found. The post with none or with the lowest indication is damaged. The arking of the spark works as a voltage limitation. The voltage potentials at both measuring points is almost equal so that you get none or only low voltage data.
