INTRODUCTION
We would like to congratulate you on the purchase of our flow switch. We
appreciate your trust. That‘s why functional security and operational safety
stands by us on first place.
To prevent damage to persons or property, you should read this user manual
carefully. Please observe all safety precautions and instructions for proper
use of the 6-2-1 Failure to follow the instructions and safety precautions can
result in injury or property damage.
Please keep this manual with the instructions and safety instructions
carefully in order to at any time you can restore them. Please always download
the latest version of the user manual of www.profi-pumpe.de under „downloads“. This shall always prevail.
IN GENERAL
- The flow monitor 6-2-1 is a control unit for the automatic operation of electric pumps that generate a delivery pressure of at least 2.5 bar. The flow monitor 6-2-1 switches the pump „ON“ and „OFF“ according to demand. The flow monitor 6-2-1 switches the pump off when there is no water in the line and thus protects it from damage due to dry running. The control unit can automatically restart the pump via an integrated timer to check whether there is water again (only for the versions with automatic reset). A pressure gauge ensures control of the switch-on pressure and the system pressure. In addition, possible leaks can be detected in good time by means of the manometer.
- The flow monitor 6-2-1 is to be used exclusively for non-abrasive clear water without deposits and other dirt. If this is not the case, an effective pre-filter with a mesh size of no more than 0.2 mm must be installed upstream of the unit. The unit contains opto-electronic components that may malfunction if exposed to water containing iron or iron oxide.
- It is not advisable to install the unit in wells or in localities where heavy condensation could occur. This will cause damage within a short time due to voltage flashover in the unit. If there is a risk of ice forming due to low ambient temperatures, it is recommended to protect the 6-2-1 control unit and the pump accordingly.
IMPORTANT!
-
The flow monitor 6-2-1 has 2 different operating modes. Switching from operating mode 1 (Quick-Stop) to 2 (Normal-Stop) is done by pressing the “Start“ key for a longer time (>6sec). In operating mode 1, the “Mode“ LED lights up in “green“, in operating mode 2, the “Mode“ LED lights up in red. Switching is only possible when water is flowing through the unit.
-
The switchgear has an integrated non-return valve. The flow monitor 6-2-1 must be installed vertically in the direction of flow, so that the check valve can work reliably. Another
non-return valve between the pump and the flow switch 6-2-1 can lead to malfunctions and is not permitted. -
After unpacking, make sure that the data on the type plate correspond to the intended
operating conditions. In case of doubt, do not operate the unit. In case of damage caused by non-observance of the operating conditions, the claim to legal warranty is void. Transport damage must be reported to the shipping company and to us in writing without delay.
INSTALLATION
The installation must be performed by a qualified professional.
-
The unit can be installed at any point between the pump outlet and the first outlet of the pump and the first consumer. The direction of the arrow on the side between the two connections must correspond to the direction of flow of the liquid in the pipe. All water-carrying pipes and connections may only be sealed with sealing thread, better with
adhesive. The use of hemp or other sealants, the residues of which can come loose on the inside and impair the
function of the non-return valve, is prohibited. -
Make sure that the connections on the suction and pressure sides are completely tight. If a pump with a maximum
pressure of more than 10 bar is used at the installation point of the switchgear, a pressure reducer must be installed at the inlet of the unit. The pump control unit is only to be used for pumps that generate a minimum pressure of 2.5 bar at the point of installation of the unit. -
The electrical connection of the unwired version is to be made according to the electrical diagram (see Fig. 4). If a consumer with a power of more than 1.1 kW is used and the room temperature is higher than 25°C, the wiring must be cables with a heat resistance of not less than 99°C must be used for the wiring. For wiring, use only the pliers designed for this purpose. Make sure that the earth cable is connected in a functionally safe way. In the case of the factory prewired version with plug and socket, it is sufficient to the mains plug of the pump to the socket of the 6-2-1 and connect the mains plug of the 6-2-1 to a mains socket of the mains supply.
-
The centrifugal pump and the suction pipe must be filled with water
manually. In the case of deep well pumps, wait until the air has escaped from the pump. Before connecting the flow monitor
6-2-1, check the function of the pump. Once you are satisfied that the pump is functioning properly, you can proceed with the installation of the pump control 6-2-1. When voltage is applied, the LEDs “Mode“ (“green“ for mode 1 or “red“ for mode 2) and “Status“ light up in “yellow“. Press the “Start“ button to start the pump for the first time. The pressure line fills with water. After the residual air is displaced from the water pipes, pressure builds up. When starting up for the first time, it may be necessary to repeat the procedure several times in succession and to start the pump by pressing the “Start“ button. Once the pressure has built up and no more water is being pumped, the pump switches off automatically. If mode 1 (mode LED in green) is selected, the pump is switched off approx. 3 seconds after the shut-off pressure is reached and the yellow “Status“ LED goes out. If mode 2 (mode LED in red) is selected, the pump is switched off approx. 8 sec after the shut-off
pressure is reached and the yellow “Status“ LED goes out.
Switching from operating mode 1 (Quick-Stop) to 2 (Normal-Stop) is done by pressing the “Start“ key for a longer time (>6sec).
- There must be no pressure drop when the tapping points are closed (water tap). If a consumer is opened, the pump must start automatically. The pressure at which the unit starts is usually preset; this switch-on pressure of 1.5 bar is optimal for most applications. It can be changed by a specialist. When setting the cut-in pressure, the highest water tapping point must be taken into account, as this determines the static pre-pressure through the water column. The highest water extraction point must not be greater than X m (specific data as shown in Fig. dure 2). For specific installation see figure 1. To set the cut-in pressure, please proceed as follows: When the pump has switched off automatically, the pressure gauge shows a certain value and this value does not change, carefully and slowly open a consumer (water tap). The pressure display on the manometer slowly moves towards “0“. When the water pressure reaches 1.5 bar, the pump switches on and the original pressure value is reached again. Now carefully turn the screw “START PRESSURE SETTING“ a little clockwise to the right with a screwdriver. Now carefully and slowly open the tapping point (water tap) again and observe the manometer display. The pump will now switch on automatically at a higher water pressure. If the switch-on pressure is to be reduced, turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise (to the left). By repeatedly turning the screw “START PRESSURE SETTING“, you can now set the desired switch-on pressure. Proceed in the same way if you want to set the cut-off pressure. Now, however, observe the shut-off pressure and turn the “SHUT-OFF PRESSURE SETTING“ screw until the desired shut-off pressure is reached.
Warning: no additional check valve should be installed between the pump and the 6-2-1, as it sometimes causes problems.
Starting pressure (bar)
| Height difference (Xmax.) between the highest water tapping point and the installation point of the pressure switch|
Minimum delivery head / Minimum pump pressure
---|---|---
0.8| 8 m| Greater than 20 m / 2 bar
1.2| 12 m| Greater than 22 m / 2,2 bar
1.5| 15 m| Greater than 25 m / 2,5 bar
2.2| 22 m| Greater than 32m / 3,2 bar
- Connect to single-phase 220V, the maximum power of 1.1 kW pump wiring diagram.
- Due to the pump controller connected to a 220V single-phase, the power is greater than 1.1 kW water pump of the circuit diagram. Contactor coil specification for AC 220V control capacity should not be less than 4 kW.
- Due to the contactor controllers connected to a 380V three-phase, power is greater than 1.1 kW water pump of the wiring diagram. Contactor coil specification for AC 220V control capacity should not be less 4 kW.
OPERATION
Regular pump operation:
Fill the centrifugal pump and the suction pipe with water. In the case of deep
well pumps, wait until the air has escaped from the pump. The pump is started
for the first time by pressing the “Start“ flow monitor (DW) 6-2-1 key. The
pressure line fills with water. If no more water is delivered, the pump is
switched off.
- The consumer is open: The pump remains switched on, water flows.
- The consumer is closed: The pump builds up the water pressure in the line and switches off depending on the set operating mode “Mode“.
For proper operation, the max. pressure of the pump must be at least 0.6 bar above the set switch-on pressure. The switch-on pressure is usually preset at the factory to 1.5 bar, an optimum value for most applications. Make sure that the distance between the cut-in and cut-off pressures is not too small. Otherwise, this may cause the pump to cycle and possibly damage it.
Mode 1-“Quick-Stop“:
When the switch-off pressure set on the DW is reached, the DW switches off
after approx. 3 sec. The yellow “Status“ LED goes out. When the consumer draws
off water and thus the pressure in the line and DW drops, the DW switches the
pump on when the switch-on pressure is reached. The DW will always try to
maintain pressure in the consumer-side line. The cut-off pressure in mode 1
can be set almost to the max. pump pressure. However, it should be approx.
0.3-0.5bar lower than the maximum pump pressure. E.g. if the max. pump
pressure is 4bar, the cut-off pressure can be set to approx. 3.5-3.7bar.
Mode 1-“Normal“:
After the DW detects that the water is no longer flowing, the pump stops
operating after approx. 8 sec. and the yellow LED goes off. The shut-off
pressure in mode 2 is set significantly lower than the max. pump pressure. It
should be approx. 0.5-0.8bar lower than the maximum pump pressure. E.g. if the
max. pump pressure is 4bar, the cut-off pressure can be set to approx.
3.2-3.5bar.
Mode 2 is always preferable to mode 1 as the unit will operate more safely
under all conditions.
Dry run protection:
The dry run protection function protects the pump from running dry without
cooling. The flow monitor (DW) registers when no water is flowing through the
unit. This can happen if no water is available “suction side“ or if air is
drawn “suction side“ due to a pipe leak. When this problem is detected, the
“Status“ LED flashes in yellow. This indicates a fault and the DW switches off
the pump. Since there is a fault, it must first be eliminated and then the
pump restarted by pressing the “Start“ button on the DW.
The 6-2-1 control is able to detect pump faults, leakages and pump failures as well as pump cycling. If the “Status“ LED flashes, this is an indication that there is a problem in the pipe or with the pump. The DW can also detect when the water pressure in the piping system decreases or increases. If no water is being pumped in the system or there is another problem, the “Status“ LED flashes. The DW 6-2-1 switches on automatically when water is present in the piping system again. Alternatively, the user can click on “Restart“ to switch on the control.
protection function against frequent switching on / cycling of the pump
If the water pump is switched on and then switched off almost immediately
afterwards, this is registered and evaluated by the 6-2-1 control. If the
stop/start time interval is less than 15 seconds, the cycle counting starts.
After 30 cycles (start/stop), the pump is switched off and only switched on
again automatically after 30 minutes. The corresponding “MODE“ LED flashes.
The main purpose of this function is to prevent damage caused by improper use,
which can lead to overheating of the pump.

SERVICING
It may happen occasionally that dirt is retained in the internal check valve
and this is no longer seals 100%. The first remedy should be always trying to
flush the check valve free. For this pur-pose, eg. As the Garden side faucet
on full blast, so that the pump at full rated power promotes about 30 minutes
water. Is then the timing is not clear, the unit must be replaced. Prior to
installati-on of the new device, the pump is in, free to flush any case, as
previously described. Opening the device on non-return valve is prohibited and
always results in the loss of any existing warranty. In addition, persons
could be dangerous when Operating a clocking pump occur, so that the pump may
be operated under any circumstances continue. Until the device replacement,
the pump must be taken out of service. For abrasive materials such as sand,
shortening the Maintenance period and the device lifetime.
