S15 Microdrive Motors Drives
Product Information
The product is the S15, a startup guide for version 1.8.0. It is
a device used to setup and program the basic parameters of a motor
system.
Startup Checklist
Before starting the setup process, the following checks should
be performed:
-
Visual Inspection:
- No foreign materials (metal shavings, hardware)
-
Input and Output Wiring:
-
Input leads are not wired to output terminals
-
Input, output and control wires are in separate conduit
-
Motor leads do not share conduit with any other motor
leads -
Verify input and output wire tightness and condition
(continuity, frayed wires, loose connections, pinched
insulation)
-
-
Motor Terminal Box:
- Verify no power factor correction capacitors are installed
- Verify wire tightness and condition (continuity, frayed wires,
loose connections, pinched insulation)
-
Drive to Motor Ground Connection (ASD chassis to motor
chassis):- Verify wire tightness and condition (continuity, frayed wires,
loose connections, pinched insulation)
- Verify wire tightness and condition (continuity, frayed wires,
-
Record the Electrical Distribution System:
- Delta/Wye with Grounded Secondary
- Grounding Capacitor: Enabled or Disabled (Note: Disable on
Ungrounded, Corner Grounded or High Impedance Grounding Systems to
avoid VFD failure)
-
Voltage:
- Verify voltages
-
Blower/Cooling Fan(s) Check:
- Verify fans operate and air flows in correct direction (bottom
to top)
- Verify fans operate and air flows in correct direction (bottom
-
Digital Inputs:
- Verify digital input operation
- The S15 has seven digital inputs available and one Safe Torque
O (STO) input. Four of the digital inputs can have more than one
function assigned. Digital inputs can be monitored on the keypad in
Monitor Mode, refer to S15 Application Note 1.1.0 Navigating Menus
& Parameters.
-
Digital Outputs:
- Verify digital output operation
- The S15 has three outputs available; two relay outputs and one
digital output. Two of the outputs can have more than one function
assigned. Parameter f139 determines if both functions are required
to be true to change state or only one function is required. Refer
to Section 11.7 of the S15 Instruction Manual E6582175 for more
details.
Product Usage Instructions
To use the S15 startup guide, follow these steps:
-
Perform a visual inspection to ensure there are no foreign
materials present, such as metal shavings or hardware. -
Check the input and output wiring:
-
Make sure the input leads are not wired to output
terminals. -
Ensure that the input, output, and control wires are in
separate conduit. -
Motor leads should not share conduit with any other motor
leads. -
Verify the tightness and condition of the input and output
wires, checking for continuity, frayed wires, loose connections,
and pinched insulation.
-
-
Inspect the motor terminal box:
-
Ensure no power factor correction capacitors are
installed. -
Check the tightness and condition of the wires, looking for
continuity, frayed wires, loose connections, and pinched
insulation.
-
-
Verify the drive to motor ground connection:
- Check the tightness and condition of the wires, ensuring
continuity, and looking for frayed wires, loose connections, and
pinched insulation.
- Check the tightness and condition of the wires, ensuring
-
Record the electrical distribution system information,
specifically whether it is Delta/Wye with Grounded Secondary. Also,
determine if the grounding capacitor is enabled or disabled. Note
that on Ungrounded, Corner Grounded or High Impedance Grounding
Systems, the grounding capacitor should be disabled to avoid VFD
failure. Refer to Section 1.3.3 of the S15 Instruction Manual
E6582175 for more details. -
Verify the voltages.
-
Check the blower/cooling fan(s) to ensure they operate and air
flows in the correct direction (bottom to top). -
Verify the operation of digital inputs:
- There are seven digital inputs available on the S15, along with
one Safe Torque O (STO) input. Some of the digital inputs can have
multiple functions assigned to them. Use the keypad in Monitor Mode
to monitor digital inputs. Refer to S15 Application Note 1.1.0
Navigating Menus & Parameters for more information.

Verify the operation of digital outputs:
- The S15 has three outputs available, including two relay
outputs and one digital output. Some of the outputs can have
multiple functions assigned to them. Parameter f139 determines if
both functions are required to be true to change state or if only
