Jumbo 19959 Disney Stratego Junior Game
Product Information
The product is Stratego Junior, a junior version of the famous game Stratego. It can be played in two ways: Stratego Quest (4+) and Stratego Triumph (6+). In Stratego Quest, players try to find dinosaurs of the correct color using a memory game. In Stratego Triumph, players move their game pieces on the board to outsmart their opponents while avoiding obstacles. The goal of both games is to reach the opponent’s last row and retrieve the stolen dinosaur egg.
Product Usage Instructions
Assembling the Playing Pieces
- Refer to image 1 on page 2 to see how to assemble the playing pieces.
- Slide the 3 cards at the bottom of page 2 into the orange eggs with the front facing outward. Do the same for the 16 cards into the orange dinosaurs.
- Repeat the process for the purple eggs and purple dinosaurs.
Game Setup
Stratego Quest! (for players aged 4 and above)
- Place the game board on a flat surface within reach of both players.
- Each player chooses a color: purple or orange.
- Set up your game pieces on your side of the game board. Ensure that the other player cannot see the pictures on your game pieces.
How to Play Stratego Quest
Note: All eggs and dinosaurs remain in their placed positions throughout the game and do not move.
- The purple player starts.
- On your turn, roll the dice. The dice will reveal a color and a dinosaur.
- Try to remember which dinosaur it was, as you may roll the same color again later in the game.
- Now it’s your opponent’s turn, and the game continues in turns.
- You can pick available dinosaur pieces during your turn.
- If you pick a dinosaur piece with a rock block marked with an X, the path is blocked. Rocks cannot be removed from the game board. Remember this for future games and think of clever ways to hide them.
- To conquer the nest and retrieve your dinosaur egg, choose the egg with an empty nest. Remove it from the game board and choose another egg on your next turn.
- If you choose the egg with a meteorite, it is removed from the game board. Additionally, your opponent must place all their previously removed dinosaur pieces back on the game board. You’ll have to start over!
- You win by choosing the egg with the stolen dinosaur egg.
Stratego Triumph
Stratego Triumph is perfect for players who have already played Stratego
Quest and serves as a stepping stone towards playing the original Stratego. It
uses the same game pieces as Stratego Quest, but does not require the dice.

The first time you play
Take a good look at Figure 1 on page 2 to see how to assemble the game pieces.
Slide the 3 items shown at the bottom of page 2 into the orange eggs, making
sure the correct side is facing upwards and outwards. Do the same with the 16
items that go into the orange dinosaurs. Repeat the assembly for the purple
eggs and dinosaurs.
Aim of the game
This is the same for Stratego Quest as it is for Stratego Triumph: be the
first player to reach the last row on your opponent’s side of the board and
retrieve your dinosaur egg!
Stratego Quest! (For players 4 years and up)
Set up:
Place the game board on a flat surface within reach of both players. Each
choose a colour team, purple or orange. Take your pieces and place them on
your side of the game board. Make sure that the pictures on your pieces cannot
be seen by the other player.
Secretly set out your pieces as follows: place your 3 egg pieces on the 3 volcanos on your side of the board. You can decide which egg goes on which of the 3 volcanos. Then place your 16 dinosaur pieces on the four rows in front of your egg pieces. You’ll see that the four spaces in the middle of the board stay empty. Make sure you place all of your pieces so that you can see the card pictures on the back but your opponent can’t. Have a look at Figure 2 on page 3 to see what your board should look when you’re ready to play.
Playing the game:
All the eggs and dinosaurs will stay on the spaces where you put them
throughout the game. They will not move about. The purple player goes first.
On your turn, roll the dice. It will show a colour and a dinosaur:
Now choose one of your opponent’s dinosaur pieces in the front row. Pick it up, turn it around and have a look at the hidden character.
- If it’s a character that matches the colour on the dice, remove that piece from the board.
- If it’s not a match, place the dinosaur piece back on the board, as you found it. Try to remember which character it was, as later in the game you might roll that colour with the dice!
Your opponent goes next and the game continues with players taking turns.
Which piece can you choose?
- At the start of the game, you can only pick up one of the 4 dinosaur pieces in your opponent’s front row.
- As soon as you remove one or more dinosaurs, you can pick up any piece that is exposed during your next turn.
- If you remove a dinosaur from your opponent’s back row, you can choose one of the 3 egg pieces during your next turn.
If at any time you pick up a dinosaur piece that hides a rock marked with an XX, your path will be blocked! Rocks do not appear on the dice and can never be removed from the board. Keep that in mind when you set up your next game! Think of a clever place to hide them!
Capturing the nest and retrieving your dinosaur egg:
As soon as you have removed any dinosaur piece from your opponent’s back row,
you can choose to pick up and look at one of the egg pieces during your next
turn.
It doesn’t matter where your path finished on the back row, you can pick
any one of the 3 egg pieces:
If you pick the egg with the empty nest, remove it from the board and during
your next turn, you can pick another egg.
Bad luck! If you pick the egg piece showing the meteorite, it is removed from the board AND any of your opponent previously removed dinosaur pieces must be placed back (by your opponent) onto the board. You’ll have to start all over again!
If you pick the egg with the stolen dinosaur eggdinosaur egg, you win the game!
Who wins?
The first player to retrieve their stolen dinosaur egg wins the game!
Stratego Triumph! (For players 6 years and up)
Ideal for players who have already played Stratego Quest, Stratego Triumph is
a natural stepping-stone towards learning how to play Stratego Original. You
will play Stratego Triumph using the same pieces as Stratego Quest, except for
the dice which is not required. In this game, you get to move your pieces
around! Your mission is to outflank your opponent in battle and reach their
back row. Once there, try to discover where the stolen egg is hidden, just as
you did in the Stratego Quest game.
The first time you play
Preparation and set up are the same as for Stratego Quest.
Playing the game
Players take turns, starting with the orange player. On your turn, you must
EITHEREITHER move one of your playing pieces OROR attack one of your
opponent’s playing pieces. You cannot do both on the same turn.
Moving
You can only move your dinosaur pieces – all except the rocks (marked with an XX) which must stay on the spaces where they were placed at the start. You can move forwards, backwards or sideways to an adjacent free space. You cannot move diagonally. You cannot move the same piece repeatedly back and forth. Imagine this situation: you make a move. During your next turn, you move back to the space you started from. The turn after that, you will not be able to repeat the same move. Try moving in another direction if you can, or move another playing piece.
Attacking
The object of this game is to knock your opponent’s dinosaur pieces out of the
game. Look carefully at the dinosaur illustrations on your playing pieces.
You’ll see that most of them have a number (11 – 66). This tells you their
strength.
When you are on a space next to one of your opponent’s pieces at the start of your turn, you can attack it (but you don’t have to).
Compare the two dinosaur ranks:
- If the challenging dinosaur has a higher number, it wins and moves onto the space left free by the defeated piece.
- If both strengths on the dinosaurs are the same, both are removed from the game.
- If the challenging dinosaur loses, it’s taken from the board and the winning piece stays put.
Remember! You can challenge a dinosaur piece on a space either side of you, in front of you or behind you, but not diagonally
Any piece that tries to challenge a rock will lose and be removed from the
game. There is one exception:
Triceratops (marked with a 33) are not the strongest dinosaurs on the
board. However, their horns are hard and they are the only ones that can
remove the rocks.
Pterodactyls (marked with a 11) are the weakest dinosaurs on the board. That’s
why they will lose almost any encounter. But they attack in groups and have
the ability to fly. That’s why they can defeat the strongest character, the
Tyrannosaurus Rex (marked with a 66).
Retrieving the stolen egg
If you reach the last row in your opponent’s half of the board, then during your next turn, you can take on one of their 3 egg pieces:
If you pick the egg piece with the empty nest, you can remove it from the
board and during your next turn you can pick another egg.
Bad luck! If you pick the egg piece with the meteorite, it is removed from the
board and so is your dinosaur piece. You will have to reach your opponent’s
last row with another one of your pieces and try again.
If you find the stolen dinosaur eggdinosaur egg, you’ve displayed great
gallantry and skill and you win the game!
Who wins?
The first player to retrieve their stolen dinosaur egg wins the game!
