Inspect all shipments carefully for damage. The purpose of this manual is to aid in the proper installation and operation of the Canarm Jet Fan (CJF). These instructions are intended to supplement good general practices and are not intended to overwrite local codes and ordinances.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PURCHASER TO ENSURE THAT THE INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THIS EQUIPMENT IS HANDLED BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.
Inspect all shipments carefully for damage. THE RECEIVER MUST NOTE ANY DAMAGE ON THE CARRIER’S BILL OF LADING AND FILE A CLAIM IMMEDIATELY WITH THE FREIGHT COMPANY.

GENERAL SAFETY

  1. The CJF units come prepared with motor electrical leads extended in a liquid tight conduit & a side mounted box. Motor leads will be marked. Wiring diagram provided.
  2. All electrical work must be done in accordance with all applicable electrical codes by a qualified electrician.
  3. Do not install or operate this fan in an environment where combustible materials, gases, fumes, or heavy moisture are present.
  4. Caution: The unit contains rotating parts, electrical components and is heavy and ceiling mounted. Use appropriate caution when installing and servicing it.
  5. Before starting the unit, carefully remove the inlet guard, and ensure all parts are secure and that the wheel rotates freely.
  6. Check and tighten, where necessary all screws, nuts, bolts, etc. prior to starting the unit. (As some may have loosened during shipping)
  7. NOTE: Check and tighten all hardware after 2 days of initial operation.
  8. Make sure there is no foreign debris in the fan compartment or lodged in the wheel itself.
  9. Inspect electrical components prior to completing electrical connections. Make sure everything is tight and free of damage that may have occurred during shipping.
  10. Always wear appropriate safety equipment when installing or servicing the unit.
  11. Please follow all applicable national, state/provincial and local codes. They will supersede this manual.
  12. Failure to follow the safety instructions in this manual may cause serious injury or death due to electrical shock, high speed rotating parts or falling weight.

INSTALLATION

  1. Carefully remove the jet fan and associated parts from its crate.
  2. The unit will be very heavy. Use appropriate hoists, gantry, lifts and all safety equipment as required by local codes.
  3. DO NOT wire and power the unit until all required inspections are complete.
  4. To avoid damage to the unit, ensure the unit is cleaned out and free of debris, i.e. loose packaging or foreign matter.
  5. Inspect the unit and make sure the fan wheel rotates freely. Inspect all hardware and fasteners as some may have loosened during shipping.
  6. Carefully remove the crate from around the unit and prepare it for mounting to the ceiling. Figures 1 & 2
  7. The ceiling should be structurally prepared to mount the unit in advance. Ensure the structure is adequate to bear the load of the unit hanging in place. Do so in accordance with local codes under the approval of structural engineers.
  8. Lift the unit to the ceiling using appropriate and approved lifting devices. Figure 3
  9. If surface mounting directly to the ceiling, provide a neoprene or rubber membrane to prevent direct contact of the CJF with the ceiling. Figure 3
  10. Complete mechanical connections to the mounting flanges provided using qualified professionals only.
  11. Remove the faceplate of the side mounted electrical box. Wiring diagram(s) will be provided within. Figure 4
  12. Wiring must be completed by qualified personnel only and done in accordance with local code.
  13. AC motor units may come with two speed, or two voltage options. Ensure the motor is wired appropriately for the available site power. AC motor units will have its wiring diagram provided in the attached wiring box.
  14. EC motor options may also come with variable speeds or voltages. Remove the inlet guard and remove the onboard electrical covers to access the power connections or 0-10v control connections. Figures 5, 6 & 7
  15. Once electrical connections are complete, replace inlet guards, or electrical box covers as required.
  16. Inspect the unit with qualified personnel prior to energizing the unit.

  1. All wiring should be completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with National & Local Electrical Codes.
  2. Ensure power supply is disconnected and the unit is locked out prior to performing any electrical work.
  3. The unit will have all power wires routed to an externally mounted wiring box. Should any components need service, refer to the wiring diagram provided inside the electrical box cover.
  4. Excess wire as a result of service to the unit must be restrained cleanly and safely within enclosures or conduit provided.
  5. If excess wire needs to be cut, ensure you label all wire extensions prior to cutting.
  6. In the case of the ECsmart, if you are connecting a control cable (remote or local) make sure to use a proper water tight bushing in the control box side of the motor. See Figures 6 & 7 or contact Canarm Ltd. for more information.

VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL
The CJF with EC motor can be easily equipped with a variable speed control, or other 0-10v control system. Refer to Figures 6 & 7 for input locations. Always use water tight fittings to prevent moisture from entering the motor’s control compartment.

PRE-START INSPECTION

  1. Set the main power breaker switch to “OFF” and lockout the power supply.
  2. Check all fasteners on the unit and those that mount the unit to the ceiling. Some may have vibrated loose during the units’ move or mounting.
  3. Remove the units’ inlet guard screen as shown in Figure 5. Make sure there is no foreign debris in the inlet/motor/wheel assembly. If any is found, carefully remove it.
  4. Rotate the wheel to ensure that it rotates freely and nothing comes in contact with the housing.
  5. Inspect the unit’s internal space to ensure it is free of debris.
  6. Once fully inspected, replace the inlet guard screen.
  7. Verify branch power – make sure your motor is wired and suitable for its supply. Failure to do so may damage or cause the motor to fail prematurely.
  8. With the units’ hardware and power supply verified, you may proceed and test the unit.
  9. Remove power lockouts and proceed with unit activation

START UP
Turn the fan on and inspect for any unusual sound or vibration.
If a problem is encountered, shut off the fan and refer to the section on troubleshooting. The fan should be inspected after 30 minutes, 8 hours and 24 hours of operation to ensure all fasteners are tight and that the unit is operating correctly.

MAINTENANCE

  1. All maintenance and wiring should be completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with National & Local Electrical Codes.
  2. Ensure power supply is disconnected and that the unit is locked out prior to performing any work on the CJF.
  3. The unit will have all power wires routed to an externally mounted wiring box. Refer to the wiring diagram provided inside the electrical box cover or in this manual for further instruction.
  4. It is recommended that all maintenance is done on the ground and NOT on the ceiling. There is a significant risk of falling weight. See Figure 8
  5. With the unit safely on the ground remove the guard screen as per Figure 5
  6. The CJFs are designed for easy maintenance. Once you remove remove the 12x bolts securing the service panel, and the electrical box, secure the motor core and then the whole assembly may be lifted out for service. See Figures 9 & 10. Make sure to use proper lifting methods as some motor cores are very heavy.
  7. When maintenance is complete, replace the core into its housing, reversing the steps shown in Figures 10 & 9, replace the guard screen (Figure 5) and prepare to lift and re-attach the unit to the ceiling.
