Useful information

Intended Use

The Wohler GS 220 Gas Sniffer is a gas leak detector for the tightness control and for the leakage testing of gas tubes. The meter shows the concentration of methane and propane on a bar graph display from 0 ppm to 1200 ppm. It is suitable for the leakage detection of gas lines carrying combustible gases. The meter is not suitable for the measurement of the exact gas concentration. The meter can be used indoors only. Do not use the meter for any other use than set out in this manual.

Information on disposal

Electronic equipment does not belong into domestic waste, but must be disposed in accordance with the applicable statutory provisions. You may hand in any defective batteries taken out of the unit to our company as well as to recycling places of public disposal systems or to selling points of new batteries or storage batteries.

Important notes

WARNING!
The Wohler GS 220 may never be used in an environment where there is the risk of explosion. If the environment is suspected to conglomerate potentially explosive gases, in no case you must use the Wohler GS 220. Batteries may not be taken from the device and/or be changed.

ATTENTION!
The Wohler GS 220 indicates the approximate concentration of gas in a 5-level LED.
However, the indication may be rather imprecise, according to the sensor, age, ambient conditions etc. The Wohler GS 220 is a gas leak detector, and as such it detects leaks, but it does not measure the exact concentration of gas.
High-density exposure to corrosive materials such as H2S, Sox, Cl2, Hall, etc. may cause corrosion or breakage of the lead wires or heater material.
Sensor drift may occur when the sensor is contaminated by alkaline metals, especially salt water spray.
Sensor drift may occur due to soak or splash the sensor with water.
If water freezes on the sensing surface, the sensor would crack and alter characteristics.
This meter requires to operate under around 21% ambient oxygen environment in order to function properly. This meter cannot work well in zero or low oxygen atmosphere.
Light condensation under indoor usage should not be a problem for sensor. However, if water condenses on the sensor‘s surface for a while, the sensor characteristics may  still drift.
Sensor performance may be also affected if exposed to a high density gas for a long time, regardless of the powering condition.
When meter is off for a long time, the sensor may show a drift in resistance according to the storage environment. So, the meter should be stored in a sealed bag with clean air.

Function Check

We recommend to carry out a Function Check of the gas detector before each use. To do this, proceed as follows.

  • Switch on the gas detector.
  • Check the external condition of the device, the function of all operating elements, the display and the charge status of the batteries.
  • Hold the sensor in fresh air. The display must now read “0”.
  • Check the sensitivity of the gas detector in a ventilated room as follows:
  • Let gas flow out at a gas lighter (do not ignite!).
  • Bring the probe of the gas detector close to the escaping gas.
  • The gas detector must now display a clear signal.

Power ON/OFF

  • Press ON/OFF key more than 0.2 second to turn on the meter. While the meter is on and electrical power is enough, the BAT. OK LED will stay on.
  • To ensure the accuracy, users must perform the warm-up period in the clean air.
  • The meter will be automatically switched off in 10 minutes. Or you could press ON/OFF key again to turn off.

While the meter is powered on but the „ready“LED is off, the sensor is under warm-up process. The warm-up time is approximately 60 seconds. While „ready“- LED is on, the meter is ready to measure. Even you turn off the meter for a short time and turn on again, it is always necessary to wait for 60 seconds warm-up time..

NOTE!
If the Wohler GS 220 has not been used for a long time, we recommend to repeat the warm up/calibration phase several times to achieve a higher sensitivity and accuracy. To do so, switch on the meter 2 or 3 times and off again, then the „ready“- LED is on.

  • The meter beeps every one second to assure the meter is in normal working status. The beeps frequency will speed up while the detected gas concentration becomes higher.
  • While user use earphone, the meter will automatically mute but user could hear the beeper through earphone.
  • While not using earphone, user could mute the beeper by switching the mute to ON position.

Leakage Checking

  • To check the pipe leakage proceed as follows:
  • Approaching the sensor to the pipe, slide slowly the sensor along the pipe; repeat the procedure from the other side of the pipe.
When the sensor is near to a leak, the LED will light and beep frequency increased.

After the Leakage Checking

  • It takes at least 2 min. to wait for sensor recovering after removing the sensor out of leak point.

Battery Replacement

  • While the Low battery LED is on, it is suggested to always have fresh batteries to ensure the accuracy. Open the battery compartment from the meter rear side and replace 4 new AA alkaline batteries.

Troubleshooting

The meter does not turn on.
Ready LED is not on after 60 seconds warm up.

  • Make sure the time of pressing „ON/OFF“ key is more than 200 ms.
  • Check the batteries are in place, good contact and correct polarity.
  • Replace a new battery and try again.
  • Check the sensor is in good contact. If LED is still off, please return the meter to the dealer for repairing.
