GENERAL APPLICATION NOTES

This product is part of personal protective equipment for protection against fall from a height and should be assigned to one person. These instructions for use contain important notes. The instructions must have been understood by the user before actual use. The reseller must provide this document in the language spoken in the country of use and it must be kept together with the equipment during the entire service life. The following instructions for use are important and help ensuring proper practical application. However, they cannot replace experience, responsible action and knowledge required for mountaineering, climbing, and working at a height or depth; and they certainly cannot free users from bearing their personal risk. The product must be used exclusively by trained, experienced persons or by instructed persons who are being supervised. Users must be aware that poor physical and/or mental health can jeopardise safety under normal conditions and in emergencies. Attention: If these instructions for use are not carefully observed, the life of persons may be at risk!

GENERAL SAFETY NOTES

Mountaineering, climbing, and work at a height or depth often entail hidden risks and hazards from external influences. Errors and carelessness may cause severe accidents, injuries, and even death. If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safety.

Use only CE marked components as personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against falling from height.

If original components of the product are modified or removed, the safety properties may be influenced adversely.

The equipment should not be altered, modified or adjusted by use of additional parts in any way not specifically recommended by the manufacturer in writing. Before and after use, check the product for possible damages. Ensure correct function and suitability for use. If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately. In case of abuse and/or improper use, the manufacturer refuses any liability. In such cases, the responsibility and risk lie with the users or persons responsible for the operation. When using this product, we recommend additionally observing the applicable national rules. Personal protective equipment is exclusively designed for securing of persons.

PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION, FIGURE CAPTIONS

Before using the equipment, the user must draw up a rescue concept that ensures a person falling into a PPE is rescued immediately, safely and effectively. Motionless suspension in a harness may cause severe injury and even death (suspension trauma). The harnesses are meant for use in ropes courses and recreational facilities (EN 15567) and corresponding to their use must be used under supervision of trained personnel. Use must be monitored. During use, buckles and adjusting elements must be checked regularly

  1. Terminology:
    A – Tie-in point to EN 12277
    B – Adjusting buckles
    C – Adjustable rear link of thigh loops and hip harness
    D – Catch eye to EN 361 (for Radialis Air only)
    E – Back plate
    F – Washable back cushion
    G – Marking surface with mit RFID-UHF tag. For digital documentation the product can be linked with a unique TAG-ID.
    H – Suspension knob (Toggle) for stowage of the harness Pricipal materials: polyester, aluminium, steel

  2. Correct use of the adjusting elements and buckles.

  3. Stowing excess ribbons.

  4. Correct positioning of the thigh loops with the rear link of thigh loops and hip harness, if available.

  5. Correct application and adjustment of the harness. The harness should be applied with the aid of a trained person. If the thigh loops are adjustable, it should be possible to push a flat hand underneath the ribbon. Confortable fit of the harness is best checked by a short hang-in test at the tie-in points (Fig. 1 – A) performed in a safe place.

Instructions

  1. Correct position of the ventral tie-in point at the front.
  2. Seating of rear ribbon crossing or – if provided for – the dorsal catch eye to EN 361 (marked “A”)
  3. Correct fit and adjustment of all adjusting buckles must be checked by a trained person!
  4. The harness must be connected to the safety system (e. g., to EN 17109) or a structure using the tie-in  point/eye that is best used for the respective application. Lanyards or connectors must be selected to suit the specific application scenario and fastened appropriately. A figure-of-eight knot is suitable for direct tie-in to the rope (9c).

ANCHORAGE POINTS (EN 795)

For safety reasons, it is essential to choose the position of the anchorage device or anchorage point and the type of work to be carried out in such a way that free fall and fall height are kept to a minimum. In order to avoid high loads and swinging falls, anchor points for belay purposes must always be as directly vertical above the belayed person as possible. The lanyard/anchor device between the attachment point and the secured person must be kept as taut as possible. Avoid sagging of ropes. The anchor point must be designed in such a way that, when fixing the PPE, no effects can occur which reduce the stability and it is not damaged during use. Sharp edges, ridges and crushing can dangerously impair its strength. Edges and burrs must be covered, where necessary, using suitable auxiliary equipment. The anchor point and the anchoring devices must be able to withstand the expected loads in a worst-case scenario. Even when using shock absorbers (according to EN 355) the anchor points should be designed for a fall load of at least 12 kN, also see EN 795.

When using a lanyard (fall arrest system), ensure that the lanyard including its energy absorber and its connectors does not exceed a maximum length of 2.0 m.

SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT
The service life of the product mainly depends on the type and frequency of use as well as on external influences. At the end of the useful life or latest at the end of the maximum service life indicated, the product must be removed from use. Products made of synthetic fibres (Polyamid, Polyester, Dyneema®, Aramid, Vectran®) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic  conditions they are exposed to. When approaching the durability limits or the end of the maximum service life indicated, the product must be removed from use.

Maximum service life
With optimum storage conditions and without use: 14 years.

Maximum useful life
Providing proper use and no detectable sign of wear showing as well as under optimum storage conditions: 10 years

Frequent use or extremely high loading may substantially reduce the useful life.

Before every use, check the product for possible damages and correct function. If any of the following applies (list non-exhaustive), remove the product from service immediately and turn it over to a qualified person or the manufacturer for inspection and/or repair. A written confirmation from an authorised body must be issued before further use is allowed:

  • if there are doubts concerning safe use;
  • if sharp edges have the potential to damage the rope or hurt the user;
  • if visible signs of damaged material show (e.g., cracks, plastic deformation);
  • if the material shows deep corrosion;
  • if the product was subjected to extreme temperatures;
  • If the product has come in contact with chemicals;
  • if the load-bearing straps have come in contact with sharp edges;
  • if the product has been subjected to a hard fall load or the high shock loads occurring in a pendulum fall.

Webbing and webbing slings with integrated wear indicators must be replaced immediately when worn down to the indicator (interior fabric of different colour has become visible); otherwise a fatal accident may occur.

Inspection and documentation
In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly, at least once a year, by the manufacturer, an adequately qualified person or an approved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or removed from use. Legibility of the markings has to be checked. Such inspections and service must be documented for each product. The following information must be recorded: product identification and name, manufacturer’s name and contact details, unique identification, date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use, date of next regular inspection, result of inspection, and signature of qualified person responsible. A suitable specimen is found at www.edelrid.com

STORAGE, MAINTENANCE AND TRANSPORT (FIG. 11)

Storage
Store cool, dry and if stored outside transport containers, protect from sunlight. Prevent contact with chemicals and protect from mechanic strain. Icing and moisture may impair the loading strength of the harness.

Maintenance
Clean contaminated products in hand warm water (if needed, add pH-balanced soap). Rinse properly. Dry at room temperature, never in dryers or near heaters/radiators! Commercial, alcohol-based (e. g. isopropanol) disinfectants may be used. The joints of metal parts must be cleansed regularly and then be lubricated with acid-free oil or a lubricant based on Teflon or silicone.

11c: Temperature during use

Transport
The product must be protected from chemicals, dirt, and mechanical damage. For this purpose, a protective bag or special storage and transport containers should be used.
