The included Mounting Plate has two adjustable screw-holes that can be repositioned as needed. Use the two screws from the thumbturn, and insert it through the screw-holes.

Optional: Determine if you need the Cover Plate

For oversized deadbolt holes, an optional cover plate is included with your smart lock. If your smart lock’s mounting plate does not fully cover the hole left by the removed thumbturn, you may want to use the included Cover Plate.

Attach the Mounting Plate

  1. If using the optional Cover Plate, place it over the deadbolt hole.
  2. Take note of the DOOR SIDE and UP arrow.
  3. Pass the mounting plate screws through the larger opening in the Cover Plate, taking note of the UP arrow.
  4. Tighten the screws until the mounting plate is settled securely against the door.

Select your adapter from the Compatibility Chart. If your lock brand is not in the chart, slide each adapter onto the tailpiece to find the right one. The correct adapter will have one of the teeth pointing up.

Place the adapter onto the tail piece. One of the triangle shaped teeth should be facing up if you have the correct adapter. Make sure the non teeth side of the adapter goes in through the tail piece first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this lock function when there is no wifi connection?

To make the preceding response clearer. You COULDN’T remotely control it if there was no WiFi. Bluetooth connection is only used for near proximity.

Does the August app need to be open in order to unlock the lock, or will it do so automatically when the phone is near the lock using bluetooth?

I’ll elaborate on the other response. Mine is set to unlock automatically when I go home. For a while, it was operating flawlessly and would automatically unlock when I got home. After that, it ceased to do so. I continued reading the app’s instructions. It was stated that in order for the August app to learn your behaviours, you should use it at least once every day. I therefore lock the door using the app before I leave for work in the morning. It has been functioning continually ever since.

How far away from the entrance may the keypad be?

To my understanding, the August WiFi does not include a keypad. The operations of the remote are controlled via a phone app. The outside of the door has a keyed lock.

Will this take the place of a dedicated dead bolt or will I need to drill a new hole for the position of the dead bolt?

The deadbolt is changed from the inside. August will then function as an automated system, but a key will still be required to access the building. Neither did I drill.

Can the door be manually opened from the inside?

Yes, you can lock or unlock the door by just grabbing the August unit’s outer ring.

Can you lock the door so that the key won’t work to open it?

No. The door can still be opened by anyone who has the appropriate key. Only the section of the lock set positioned on the interior is replaced with this lock.

Does the fourth generation lock require a separate purchase of the connector?

No, it has everything you require.

Is my key still valid if the Wi-Fi isn’t functioning properly?

Yes, the inside key lock remains the same; hence, the original key still functions.

Do visitors need to download an app in order to enter without a key or keypad?

The guest would need to install the app to open the lock if you did not purchase the add-on keypad. An automated text message with a link to the app’s download will be sent when you add a guest.

Why does the black cost more?

The WiFi variant is available only in black. The WiFi variant is more recent, more affordable, and smaller than the Bluetooth ones!
