FAQs

What is the difference between the smart sensor and the room sensor?****

The smart and room sensors do not use WIFI. They use an RF connection with the thermostat. Company descriptions indicate a 65′ range for the smart sensor vs. a 45′ range for the room sensor. The company stated in a pro training session that the actual distance can be farther depending on material (walls, etc.) attenuating the sensor signal to the thermostat.

Has anyone used both the old sensor (came with Ecobee 3) and this new one and noticed a difference? What is better during real world use?****

I have both the room sensor and the smart sensor, 2 each. First the difference, room sensor cannot detect occupancy but smart sensor does, if you have follow me setup you’d have better results if you use just the smart sensor. Battery life is about the same given smart sensor uses the more expensive and higher capacity CR2477 VS CR2032 on the room sensor.

Does this model work with ecobee3 lite?****

I also had issues updating the firmware on the 3 lite. Customer service was able to push and I was then able to pair without any problems.

Do we need more sensors to place 1 in each bedroom or 1 is enough?****

We have a 3 bedroom home but since it’s just me and my wife, mostly only one bedroom gets used. However, one of our adult children visits about once a month and uses one of the bedrooms a couple nights while he’s here. So, we have a sensor in that bedroom as well. But, that sensor only participates in “sleep” in the schedule, so it only pays attention to that sensor at night. If you use every bedroom in your house, you may want a sensor in each. Or, you may determine that generally speaking, whatever the temp is in your room, the other rooms may have the same temp, so you don’t need the extra sensor(s).

Will this work with ecobee4?****

Yes.

What firmware do I need on my Ecobee3 lite to add smart sensors?****

The firmware version should be 4.5.13.47

Will this work with ecobee4?****

Yes.

Will this help the my ecobee “decide” when it might be more efficient to turn the furnace fan on to circulate air vs. turn on AC?****

It will not. Although if you have an IFTTT system, then you may be able to do it.

Will those works with ecobee3 lite?****

Yes, the smart sensors will work with the ecobee3 lite.

Where do I buy the batteries ? can’t find a reliable source for the cr2477 Panasonic which came along.****

It can be any CR2477 battery. Panasonic, Duracell, Sony, Murata. You can buy From Amazon
Panasonic CR2477 3V Lithium Cell Battery (Pack of 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VAZSO2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Lex7Eb9T2MHEW

What’s the return policy

All about the response time of the sensor and animal detection.

Does sensor monitor humidity?****

No. Temperature and presence.

Is this the same sensor that comes with Ecobee 4?****

It looks the same but I have no way of knowing for sure!

Can you buy just one sensor?****

They come in a two pack unless you buy the Ecobee 3 thermostat with the one sensor included. If you have the Ecobee installed without sensors now, then you will have to settle for the two-sensor pack to add to your system.

Can I set it to alert me when a room reaches a high temperature?****

Yes, you do have the ability to set a high-temperature alert using the Smart Sensor.
