Sharpening the Mortise Chisel

Warning icon

  • Mortise chisel and bit sets have very sharp edges. Use extreme caution when installing, removing or handling the chisel and bit.
  • Always make sure the drill press or mortising machine is turned off and unplugged before removing the mortise chisel insert and bit.

Caution:

  • If you elect to mount the sharpening cone in a handheld drill or drill press, do NOT exceed 250 rpm. Excessive speed will create high temperatures that can ruin the mortising chisel or bonding of the diamond abrasive to the cones.

    1. Remove the auger-style bit from inside the mortise chisel. Secure the mortise chisel in a bench or drill-press vise so that it is perfectly vertical. This is especially essential if you are using a drill press to sharpen the chisel.

    2. Mount the appropriate sharpening cone for your application in the handle that came with the 3-Piece Mortise Chisel Sharpening Set, making sure it seats fully in the quick-change chuck. (To release the cone, pull back on the handle collar.)

    3. Lower the sharpening cone, tip first, into the center of the cutting end of the mortise chisel. The cone should be in perfect vertical alignment with the chisel so that the diamond abrasives sharpen all of the chisel’s inside bevels equally. This will result in cutting edges of equal height for the most efficient boring action. Fig. 1

    4. Slowly hone the chisel until any nicks are removed and all cutting bevels are sharp. Do not force the cone into the chisel; use a light touch, especially for final honing. This will allow the diamond abrasives to cut more efficiently and prevent damaging heat buildup. Fig. 2

    5. If you started out with the 220-grit cone for initial sharpening, switch to the 600-grit cone and repeat Steps 3-4 to complete final honing.

    6. Remove the mortise chisel from the vise and use an extra-fine honing stone or micro-abrasive on a honing plate to lightly touch up and remove any burrs on the outside flats of the chise.
