WINNCARE MI0440 Mangar Bathing Cushion
Ensure that you read and understand this instruction manual before using this product. Failure to follow the instructions and safety precautions in this manual can result in damage and/or serious injury.
Please keep these instructions in a safe location for future reference
WARNINGS (Risk of possible injury or other serious adverse reactions)
- Ensure that you feel completely confident to use the Bathing Cushion either on your own or with assistance if required. You may be at risk of drowning or injury if you are uncertain or not confident in using the Bathing Cushion or if a medical condition prevents you from using the Bathing Cushion as laid out in these instructions. If you have any concerns about an existing medical condition affecting your ability to safely operate the Bathing Cushion, consult a health professional.
- The independence that the Bathing Cushion provides does not negate the need to ensure that adequate assistance is on hand in case it is required. It is advisable that a telephone or other means of communication is taken into the bathroom when bathing without assistance. As with all mechanical and electrical devices, unforeseen breakdowns can occur and so whilst in the unlikely event that there is a malfunction of the Bathing Cushion, a method of summoning adequate assistance should be available.
- Do not operate the Airflo 12 compressor in the presence of flammable anaesthetic mixtures with air, oxygen or nitrous oxide, as these mixtures can create a combustible environment leading to the potential for fire or even an explosion in the presence of a spark.
- Do not use the Bathing Cushion if under the influence of alcohol or if taking medication which may affect your ability to exercise judgment, coordination or motor control.
- The Bathing Cushion should only be used as a bathing aid, NEVER use it out of a bath. NEVER use the Bathing Cushion to climb in or out of the bath. NEVER use it as a step, stand or as a device for lifting items.
- Do not use the Bathing Cushion as a support to steady yourself when cleaning the bath or when reaching into the bath to retrieve items, as doing so may place an uneven or unbalanced load on the Bathing Cushion causing it to become unstable.
- The Bathing Cushion should only be used for its stated purpose and should not be modified in any way.
- ALWAYS INFLATE THE BATHING CUSHION AND USE THE BATHING CUSHION TO LOWER YOURSELF INTO THE BATH. This allows the micro processor in the Airflo 12 to calculate the required battery power to raise the Bathing Cushion and if it calculates that there would be insufficient power, it will not allow the hand control to operate the down function.
- NEVER lower yourself into the bath by disconnecting the Bathing Cushion air hose from the Airflo 12 compressor. Doing this will make the Bathing Cushion deflate in an uncontrollable manner and also the micro processor in the Airflo 12 will not have calculated if there is enough battery power to raise the Bathing Cushion when reconnected.
- Ensure that when in use, the Airflo 12 compressor, the hand control lead and air hose are laid out in such a way as to avoid any risk of tripping or strangulation.
- Do not allow children to play with the Bathing Cushion or Airflo 12 as operation of the equipment in an uncontrolled or unsupervised situation may lead to personal injury and/or damage.
- To avoid personal injury during use and/or damage to the equipment, keep animals away from the Bathing Cushion and Airflo 12 compressor.
- Before each use, ensure that there are no obvious signs of damage or lose suction cups. If in doubt, do not use and seek advice from your supplier.
- To ensure full stability when in use, make sure that the sides of the Bathing Cushion touch the sides of the bath when fully inflated.
- Remove any non slip mats from the area where the suction cups will be positioned.
- Ensure that any oil and soap residue is removed from the Bathing Cushion and bath. Pay particular attention to the suction cups and floor of the bath. Ensure that the suction cups adhere firmly to the bath before each use. The suction cups may not adhere to the surface in baths that have been re-enamelled or that have rippled or textured surfaces. Do not use if the suction cups do not adhere to the bath.
- To maintain stability, DO NOT try to lower yourself into the bath or raise yourself from the bottom of the bath until you are IN AN UPRIGHT SEATED POSITION CENTRALLY AND RIGHT TO THE BACK OF THE SEAT SO THAT YOU ARE TOUCHING THE BACKREST (see figs. 6 & 9).
- To avoid the risk of electric shock, NEVER recharge the battery in the bathroom, outdoors or in a damp environment.
- Do not use any other air supply to inflate the Bathing Cushion.
- The suction cups contain Latex. Users with an allergy to Latex should take particular care to avoid prolonged contact with the suction cups. The suction cups are situated at the base of the seat and are not normally in direct contact with the user during use.
CAUTIONS (Risk of possible problems including device malfunctions, device failure, damage to the device or damage to other property)
- Only recharge the battery with the Mangar battery charger supplied with the Airflo 12 compressor.
- To prevent damage, always release the suction under each suction cup before lifting the Bathing Cushion from the bath. Do not attempt to release the suction by pulling up on the seat, backrest or ‘handle’.
- Never use hot air to dry the Bathing Cushion following cleaning as this may affect the integrity of the welded seams and fabric and lead to premature failure of the cushion resulting in an inability of the cushion to raise you from the bath.
- Disconnect the Airflo 12 compressor from the Bathing Cushion before transporting so as to avoid accidental inflation of the cushion.
- Do not use bath additives containing peanut oil as this can damage the suction cups. If such additives have been used, ensure that the suction cups are thoroughly washed and rinsed to remove residues.
Intended use
The Bathing Cushion is intended solely for use as a bathing aid to assist a
person to lower themselves into and out of a bath. Users should have
sufficient upper body strength to be able to hold the sides of the bath for
added support if required. The Bathing Cushion is not intended for any other
use and should never be used outside of a bath. When properly maintained, the
Bathing Cushion will give many years of trouble-free service.
Construction
The Bathing Cushion is constructed from a very strong polyurethane-coated
nylon material which has been precision cut into panels and then joined
together by high frequency welding. This produces a very strong light weight
and air tight construction. The Bathing Cushion incorporates an air pressure
relief valve which will not allow the cushion to be over inflated by the
Airflo 12 compressor.
Power is provided by the Mangar Airflo 12 battery powered compressor.
PLEASE READ the separate Airflo 12 compressor instructions before using your
Bathing Cushion.
Standard product contents
1 x Bathing Cushion
(c/w): Bathing Cushion User Instructions.
Before fitting the Bathing Cushion in the bath
- Remove any non slip mats from the area where the suction cups will be positioned.
- Ensure the bottom of the bath is clean and smooth, with no oil or bath cleaner residues that will prevent the suction feet from sticking. WARNING: The suction cups may not adhere to the surface in baths that have been re-enameled or that have rippled or textured surfaces. Do not use if the suction cups do not adhere to the bath.
- Pass the air hose through the loop in the corner of the backrest (A fig.1), on the side that you propose getting into and out of the bath. The air inlet valve (B) can be rotated, allowing the hose to be led to the appropriate corner.
Fitting the Bathing Cushion in the bath
-
Fold the backrest over onto the seat as indicated in fig. 2. Lightly place the deflated Bathing Cushion in the middle of the empty bath with the ‘handle’ (C) aligned with the centre of the bath.
-
Hold the ‘handle’ and pull the Bathing Cushion towards the slope of the bath until there is a gap of approximately 25mm between the bath slope and ‘handle’
(C figs. 2 & 3). -
Firmly press all four suction cups down and check that they are securely stuck to the bath. Wet them to help them stick if necessary.
-
Fold the backrest out so that it rests on the slope of the bath.
Connecting the air hose and hand control
- Connect the air hose from the Bathing Cushion to the Airflo 12 air outlet socket (D fig. 4).
- Connect the Hand Control (E) to the Airflo 12 hand control socket (F).
Dry trials (without water in the bath)
- Select ‘Up’ on the hand control (G fig. 5) to inflate the Bathing Cushion. The compressor will stop automatically once the Bathing Cushion is fully inflated. Press firmly down on the Bathing Cushion to secure the suction cups to the floor of the bath. Check all four suction cups are securely stuck to the bath. Wet them to help them stick if necessary.
- Whilst still clothed and with the help of an assistant if required, carry out some dry ‘practice runs’ according to these instructions until you are totally confident using the product.
Note: During a ‘dry trial’ the Bathing Cushion may make a noise when being lowered and raised due to the fabric rubbing against the dry sides of the bath, this is normal and the noise will disappear when the bath is full of water.
Using the Bathing Cushion
WARNING: ALWAYS INFLATE THE BATHING CUSHION AND USE THE BATHING CUSHION TO LOWER YOURSELF INTO THE BATH. This allows the micro processor in the Airflo 12 to calculate the required battery power to raise the Bathing Cushion and if it calculates that there would be insufficient power, it will not allow the hand control to operate the down function.
Note: We advise that the best place to secure the handset is on the inside side of the bath as if it becomes displaced or knocked for any reason it will drop into the water and not onto the floor, which may make it difficult to reach.
to get into the bath
-
With the Bathing Cushion in the bath, ensure that all 4 suction cups are adhering to the floor of the bath, fill the bath with water at a suitable temperature (Maximum 50°C/120°F).
-
With the Bathing Cushion fully inflated, sit on the seat and then swing your legs into the bath (fig.6).
-
To maintain stability, ENSURE THAT YOU ARE SEATED CENTRALLY AND RIGHT AT THE BACK OF THE SEAT SO THAT YOU ARE TOUCHING THE BACKREST (fig. 7).
WARNING: Do not sit further forwards as shown in figure 8, as you may slide off the front of the seat and sustain possible serious injury. -
Select ‘Down’ to lower yourself into the bath. KEEP YOUR KNEES BENT AND FEET FLAT ON THE FLOOR OF THE BATH AS YOU ARE LOWERED SO AS TO AVOID SLIDING FORWARDS ON THE SEAT. Hold the sides of the bath or grab handles for added support if required.
You can stop at any time by releasing the ‘Down’ button.
Note: you may find it more comfortable to leave a small amount of air in
the Bathing Cushion, to cushion yourself on the bottom of the bath (fig. 9).
to get out of the bath
You can stop at any time by releasing the ‘Down’ button.
Note: you may find it more comfortable to leave a small amount of air in the
Bathing Cushion, to cushion yourself on the bottom of the bath (fig. 9).
to get out of the bath
-
When you have finished bathing, PLACE YOURSELF IN AN UPRIGHT SEATED POSITION CENTRALLY AND RIGHT TO THE BACK OF THE SEAT SO THAT YOU ARE TOUCHING THE BACKREST, WITH FEET AND KNEES DRAWN BACK (fig. 10).
NOTE: Partially inflating the Bathing Cushion will allow the backrest to inflate and assist you in sitting upright. Hold the sides of the bath for added support if required. -
Select ‘Up’ on the hand control when you are ready to get out of the bath.
-
You can stop at any time by releasing the ‘Up’ button.
-
Select ‘Up’ again to continue raising yourself. If necessary, hold onto the side of the bath or the grab handle to steady yourself as you are being raised (See figs. 10 & 11).
-
With the Bathing Cushion fully inflated, rotate your upper body and swing your legs over the side of the bath.
To remove the Bathing Cushion from the bath
- After use, drain the bath water and release the suction cups from the floor of the bath. Do this by lifting the rim of a pair of suction cups (fig. 12) to release the suction between suction cup and bath.
- Tilt the Bathing Cushion so that the released suction cups do not re-adhere to the surface (It helps to place a small towel beneath them to stop them re-adhering to the bath).
- Release the remaining pair of suction cups by lifting their rims as before.
- Remove the Bathing Cushion from the bath and disconnect the air hose.
NOTE: To deflate the Bathing Cushion when not sitting on it, disconnect
the air hose. The Airflo 12 compressor will not suck air from the Bathing
Cushion. To speed up deflation, apply some weight to the Bathing Cushion by
pressing down on it.
For ease of carrying and hanging up for storage, fold the Bathing Cushion as
indicated (fig. 13) and pass the ‘handle’ (C) through the slot between the
seat and backrest.
Cleaning
Routine cleaning
- Drain the bath water and fully inflate the Bathing Cushion for cleaning whilst it is still in the bath. To clean between the seat and base sections, partially deflate the Bathing Cushion.
- All components can be cleaned with a proprietary non abrasive mild liquid cleaner or disinfectant. Always follow packaging instructions for using mild detergent products. NOTE: Before using proprietary cleaners, always test on an inconspicuous area.
- Use a soft cloth when cleaning.
- Do not wash the product in boiling water.
IMPORTANT: Following cleaning and after each use, rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap deposits. Wipe dry or leave to air dry. Never store the Bathing Cushion when it is wet or damp. It is recommended that the Bathing Cushion is left inflated in-between uses to allow air to circulate around it and reduce the risk of mould forming on the surface of the product. Do not leave in bright sun light. Do not dry using hot air.
Disinfection
The Bathing Cushion should be fully inflated and pre-cleaned by washing
with detergent and water, thoroughly rinsed and then disinfected using a 1:10
solution of household liquid bleach and water (1 part bleach to 10 parts cold
water). Leave the solution on the Bathing Cushion for approximately 10 minutes
before thoroughly rinsing off with clean cold water.
WARNING: Never mix bleach with any other cleaning product as doing so can result in the formation of harmful acids and poisonous gasses which can cause serious breathing problems. Thick bleach should not be used for disinfection purposes (other than in toilet bowls and drains) as it contains potentially poisonous additives. Always read the safety information on the label before using any bleach product.
Maintenance
- Clean the Bathing Cushion after each use. NOTE: It is especially important to thoroughly clean your Bathing Cushion after each bath if ‘Dettol’ or similar products have been added to the bath water.
- Regularly check that the suction cups are secure and undamaged; these are screwed onto threaded studs on the underside of the Bathing Cushion and should only be hand tight (fig.14).
- Check that the air hose and connector are not damaged.
Winncare recommends that your Bathing Cushion is inspected annually by either your supplier or other suitably qualified person. If required, Winncare can provide the above inspection within an annual service contract (UK only). Please contact our Customer Service Department for further details on Freephone 0800 2800 485.
Transportation / Storage
Disconnect the Airflo 12 compressor from the Bathing Cushion before
transporting so as to avoid accidental inflation of the cushion.
Ensure that the Bathing Cushion is clean and thoroughly dry before storing.
Failure to thoroughly dry the Bathing Cushion before storage may result in a
build-up of mould on the surface of the product leading to a weakening of the
fabric and consequential invalidation of the product warranty. Store in a dry
environment.
To maintain the Airflo 12 battery when being stored for long periods, put the
Airflo 12 on charge for 16 hours every 3 months.
Disposal / Recycling
When the Bathing Cushion has reached the end of its working life, dispose of
it at your local household waste recycling centre (civic amenity site).
When the Airflo 12 has reached the end of it’s working life, remove the
batteries for safe disposal in accordance with your local council guidelines,
and dispose of the Airflo 12 at your local household waste recycling centre
(civic amenity site).
