PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION, FIGURE CAPTIONS

Slings and lanyards should not be fastened, shortened, or extended by means of knots. Choke hitching can also significantly reduce the load-bearing capacity and should therefore be avoided. Slings and lanyards must be fastened to a reliable attachment point only using connectors (karabiners) to EN 362, to a full body harness or other components of the fall arrest system. Lanyards and anchor devices according to EN 354/EN 795-B should not be used as a fall arrest system without a shock absorber as per EN 355 – the dynamic forces acting on the user must be reduced to max. 6 kN. Attention! The total length for systems with energy absorbers (including terminations, shock absorber, and connectors) must not exceed 2 m. The attachment point and the anchoring must be capable of withstanding the loads occurring in the worst conceivable case. Even when energy absorbers (to EN 355) are used as required by EN 363 (fall arrest systems), the attachment points must be designed to bear arrest forces of min. 12 kN; also see EN 795. Two individual lanyards with an energy absorber each should not be used side by side (arranged parallel to another). The free end of a double-stranded lanyard used in combination with an energy absorber should not be fastened to the harness. Length adjustments shall be made in a safe location, where there is no fall hazard and should be checked regularly during use. In order to reduce the height of the free fall and thus avoid high loads or pendulum falls, anchor points for belay purposes must always be as vertical as possible of the belayed person. Before using a fall arrest system, it must be ensured that the required free space at the workplace (clear height) of 7m below the user is guaranteed. The lanyard connecting the attachment point to the secured person must be kept as tightly tensioned as possible. Avoid sagging of ropes! Sharp edges, burrs and pinching may substantially impair the loading strength. Spots causing such damage may have to be covered with suitable auxiliary materials. Moisture and icing especially may substantially impair the loading strength of textile products! If the hazard assessment performed prior to the work shows that a fall load might occur across an edge, be sure to arrange for suitable precautions/rescue operations and include these in training:

  • check whether fall across the edge may be prevented somehow
  • install an edge protector.

In any case, before and during use, plan for rescue procedures that are effective and safe. To avoid a strangulation hazard, be sure to never hold the head between two parallel lanyard branches or sling sections. If the lanyard is used as an anchor device to EN 795-B, it is recommended that date of next or last inspection is marked. PPE products are exclusively meant to secure persons, not to lift equipment. If the lanyard is used with an anchor device to EN 795, class C, the deflection of the horizontal, movable guide must likewise be considered when determining the clear height below the user. If the lanyard is used individually for working at height (e.g., aid climbing), only anchor points  according to EN 795 should be used. Products marked with CEN TS 16415 are approved for use by more than one person at a time (attention: see marking for max. number of persons).

USE LIMITATION

  • a) The minimum breaking strength is min. 18 kN for EN 795-B or min. 22 kN for EN 354 and EN 566, or higher – see label.
  • b) Girth hitching the sling reduces its strength to approximately 75%, basket hitching the sling approximately double its strength.
  • c) Tying a knot in the sling reduces its strength about 50%.
  • d) Do not ring load the sewn loop.
  • e) If an Antitwist is used, ensure that the connector is clipped into the sling. An Antitwist should not be used with open slings.
  • f) Both strands of adjustable slings should be loaded simultaneous. Do not take the risk of a fall into the self-securing slings.

INSTALLATION AND TESTIN

  • a) How to thread the Ancora Pro for use around structures.
  • b) How to adjust the Match Sling.
  • c) 1-3: How to thread the Multichain for use around structures.c) 4-5: How to thread the Multichain for the use on a Belay Stadion. c) 6: How to use the Multichain as a Self-securing sling. d) 1: Always aim to use and angle less than 90° when using a basic connector.
  • d) 2-3: Be careful to not exceed 90° angle as this may cause the connector to fail. Only use multi-directional connectors (min. 20 kN) when the angle exceeds 90°. Never exceed 120°. Tibor: If used as hitch knot, the following things need to be given attention: number and position of the windings and the condition and diameter of the working rope! FALL ON THE LANYARD

Avoid any slack of rope between the user and the anchor point. Potential fall factor should never exceed 0.3.

CLIMATE REQUIREMENTS

SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT

Maximum service life in years:

Corresponds to the time from the date of manufacture to discard state. Products made of synthetic fibers (Polyamide, Polyester, Dyneema®, Aramid, Vectran®) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic conditions they are exposed to. Aramid fibers have a low resistance to UV radiation and should therefore not be exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.High-strength polyethylene fibers have a lower melting point (140 °C) than other synthetic fibers and a much lower coefficient of friction, which can make such textile products more difficult to control during use.

Maximum useful life providing proper use and no detectable signs of wear showing as well as under optimum storage conditions. The useful life of the product corresponds to the time from first use to discard state and mainly depends on the type and frequency of use as well as external influences. At the end of the useful life or latest at the end of the maximum service life, the product must be removed from use.

Frequent use or extremely high load may substantially reduce the service life. Therefore, before every use, check the device for possible damage and correct function. If any of the following points apply, immediately remove the product from use and turn it over to an adequately qualified person or the manufacturer for inspection and/or repair (we do not claim this list is complete):

  • if there are doubts concerning safe use;
  • if the edges of webbing are damaged or if fibres have been pulled from the webbing;
  • if visible signs of abrasion show on seams;
  • If the product has come in contact with chemicals (e.g.; battery acid);
  • if sharp edges are located on the metal parts;
  • if the abrasion is extensive on the metal parts, i.e.; loss of material;
  • if corrosion is present on the metal parts;
  • if a hard fall load has occurred;
  • if the sheath is badly damaged (core is visible).

Inspection and documentation

In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly or at least once a year by the manufacturer, a qualified person or an approved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or removed from use. Legibility of the markings must be checked. Such inspections and service must be documented for each product. The following information must be recorded: Product identification and name, manufacturer’s name and contact details, unique identification, date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use, date of next regular inspection, result of inspection, and signature of the qualified person responsible. A suitable specimen is found at www.edelrid.de In case of commercial use, the relevant information contained in this user manual must be made available to each user before using the product.

STORAGE, MAINTENANCE AND TRANSPORT

Storage

Store cool, dry, and protected from daylight outside transport containers. Prevent contact with chemicals and store without mechanical stress.

Maintenance

Clean contaminated products in hand warm water and rinse properly. Dry at room temperature, never in dryers or near heaters / radiators! Commercial disinfectants based on alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if necessary.

Transport

The product must be kept away from chemicals, dirt and mechanical damage. For this purpose, a protective bag or special storage and transport containers should be used
