Original care instructions for Petromax cast iron products
We are pleased that you have chosen a product from our company. To ensure that you have a lot of fun with your Petromax cast iron product, we would like to inform you in detail about the typical product and product properties of cast iron. If you want to enjoy your Petromax cast iron product for a long time, proper use (not misused) and regular maintenance care of your Petromax cast iron product must be a matter of course.

IMPORTANT : The Petromax cast iron product is supplied with a seasoned finish (pre-treated surface), i.e. it does not need to be baked before first use. These care instructions will help you to preserve your product for a long service life.

Information on these instructions

Read the care instructions completely before using the Petromax cast iron product. The instructions form the basis for the safe handling of the Petromax cast iron product. Improper use can lead to personal injury and damage to property. The instructions must also be handed over when reselling the product! Therefore, keep all documents for later use or for the subsequent owner.

These instructions are a supplement to the imprint on the packaging or the insert of your Petromax cast iron product. There you will find more detailed information on the description of the individual parts. You can recognize which product it is by the article number that can be found on the packaging or is attached to the Petromax cast iron product, e.g. „ft9“ on the lid of your Dutch Oven ft9 as a relief or „fp20“ on the handle of your Fire Skillet fp20.

Intended use of the Petromax cast iron product

Possible applications
The Petromax cast iron product is known for its durability, heat conductivity and versatility. Here are some typical uses:

  • Roasting and braising: Cast iron pans and pots are ideal for roasting and braising meat, poultry, vegetables and other ingredients. The even heat distribution helps to achieve consistent cooking.
  • Baking: Some Petromax cast iron products are suitable for use in the oven. They can be used for baking bread, cakes, casseroles and other oven dishes.
  • Deep-frying: Due to their heat resistance, cast iron pans are well suited to deep-frying food. The high heat storage capacity enables even temperature control.
  • Grilling : Cast iron grill pans and grill plates can be used on the stove or in the oven to prepare meat, vegetables or other grilled dishes.
  • Soups and stews: Large cast-iron pots are ideal for preparing soups, stews and other dishes that require a longer cooking time.
  • Heat retention: Cast iron retains heat very well, so Petromax cast iron products can be used to keep food warm on the table or when serving.

It is important to note that the Petromax cast iron product must often be baked or oiled in order to improve its non-stick properties and extend its service life. (see chapter „Baking“)
Care instructions, such as avoiding harsh cleaning agents and regular oiling, should be observed in order to maintain the quality of the Petromax cast iron product.

Specifications for the intended use and restrictions

  • Types of food that should come into contact with the Petromax cast iron product: All types of food (aqueous, alcoholic and fatty foods as well as dairy products), except acidic foods.
  • Duration and temperature of treatment and storage in contact with the food/ conditions of use: High temperature applications for heating, cooking and baking or serving food. Petromax cast iron products are not suitable for storing food.
  • Information on necessary treatments or restrictions on the use of the food contact material: Before first use, clean with hot water and then dry thoroughly. Do not use washing-up liquid. Store in a dry place. Due to the pre-treated surface, baking is not necessary. Avoid acidic foods during use. Cast iron can rust and requires special care to maintain its food-safe properties. It is therefore unsuitable for storing food.

Suitable firing types
The Petromax cast iron product is versatile and you can use the Petromax cast iron cookware, which has no feet, on all types of stoves.

  • Hob : Cast iron pans and pots can be used on conventional hobs, whether gas, electric or induction. The even heat distribution of cast iron ensures good cooking results.
  • Oven : Petromax cast iron products are ovenproof and can therefore be used in the oven. This is particularly useful for stews, roasts or for baking bread and desserts.
  • NOTE Do not place the Petromax cast iron product in the oven on the floor, but on a grate!
  • Grill : Cast iron grill pans or grill plates are ideal for grilling meat, vegetables or other grilled dishes. They can be used on an outdoor grill or on the stove.
  • Fire pit/campfire: The Petromax cast iron product can be used over open flames in a fire pit or over a campfire. This makes it ideal for outdoor cooking when camping or barbecuing.
  • Outdoor cooking areas: Cast iron pots and pans can also be used on special outdoor cooking areas, such as camping stoves or fire pits.
  • Induction stove: Petromax cast iron products are suitable for use on induction stoves.

NOTE
It is important to note that the handling of cast iron pans and pots may require some specific considerations depending on the firing method. For example, cast iron should rest flat and stable on induction stoves, and a suitable surface is important when using over open flames. Always follow the manufacturer‘s instructions and recommended care instructions for the specific firing method!

For your safety

  • Always work with caution and only when you are in good health: tiredness, illness, alcohol con-sumption, the influence of medication and drugs are irresponsible, as you can no longer use the Petromax cast iron product safely.
  • Before use, check the Petromax cast iron product for damage. Do not use damaged cookware. As soon as a part is defective, it must be replaced before the next use.
  • Select the optimum hob size for your Petromax cast iron product. To avoid injuries or material damage, observe the load capacity of your stove type (e.g. grill, stove) specified by the manufacturer and adapt it to your cookware.
  • For sensitive surfaces: Note the weight of the Petromax cast iron product. Do not drop the product, but set it down carefully. Do not push heavy cookware as this can scratch sensitive surfaces.
  • Do not heat your Petromax cast iron product when it is empty, otherwise it could overheat.
  • Do not leave the hot Petromax cast iron product unattended on a heat source.
  • Do not extinguish burning fat with water. Cut off the oxygen supply with a lid or blanket. Remove the source of ignition. If burns occur, apply first aid measures and seek professional medical help.
  • Use cooking utensils made of wood, heat-resistant plastic or silicone instead of metal. This, as well as abrasive sponges or metal drip scrapers, could damage your Petromax cast iron product. Do not cut directly into the Petromax cast iron product with a knife when using it.

| Warning! Hot surface!

Cast iron cookware becomes very hot during use. To avoid injury:

•      Keep children and animals away when using the Petromax cast iron product.

•      Protect your hands with a heat-resistant cloth or protective gloves and use a lid lifter.

Transport and storage instructions

  • Ensure safe and damage-free transportation.
  • Never store your Petromax cast iron product when it is wet and untreated. Always dry it thoroughly and spread a thin layer of Petromax Care Paste over the entire surface.
  • Store your cast iron in a dry place. For optimum ventilation, you can place a piece of thin cardboard, wood or the Petromax silicone trivet between the pot and lid or between the two halves of the sandwich, waffle and burger irons.
  • Should small rust spots nevertheless form: Remove light rust with a wire brush and grease your Petromax cast iron product with Petromax Care Paste. Baking is necessary. If your Petromax cast-iron product develops heavy rust spots, we recommend that you burn in your Petromax cast-iron product again.

Before first use
Rinse the product with hot water, rinse with cold water and dry well. All Petromax cast iron products are already baked at the factory and therefore ready for use.

Operation

Only touch your Petromax cast iron product with fireproof gloves or oven mitts. The handles can become very hot. Alternatively, use the Petromax Aramid Handle Cover for your Fire Skillet (Art.: handle300) for protection. To remove the lid, you can use the Petromax Lid Lifter (Art.: ftdh) or Professional Lid Lifter (Art.: ftplus) for the Dutch Oven.

After removing your Petromax cast iron product from the stove, grill or fire, place it on a heat-resistant surface. Heat-sensitive surfaces can otherwise be damaged. We recommend the silicone trivet for Dutch Ovens (Art.: slx-c). This is temperature-resistant from -40°C to 230°C. You can also use the aramid potholders with grip (art.: t300-e) or without grip (art.: t300) as trivets.

Cleaning

If you care for your Petromax cast iron product correctly, it will last for generations. You should observe a few important basic rules:
Let your Petromax cast iron product cool down after use before you clean it and then rinse it by hand with hot water only, dry it thoroughly and grease it.

Use the Petromax care paste for cast and wrought iron (Art.: ft-care) or a neutral oil, such as rapeseed or pumpkin seed oil, or vegetable fat. Do not use olive oil, as it cannot be heated as much as other fats. Do not use abrasive or corrosive products or metal scourers. For encrustations we recommend the Petromax scraper (Art.: os or os-z) or the Petromax ring cleaner for cast and wrought iron (Art.: scrub or scrub-xl).

Caution! Risk of material damage!
Do not drop the Petromax cast iron product and do not pour cold liquids onto the still hot cast iron during cleaning, as it is a brittle material that can crack!

Important: Don‘t forget to burn in

  • The patina must be renewed if it has been affected. For example, it may happen that your Petromax cast iron product starts to rust in some places. If this occurs, you should brush off the rust mechanically with a steel wire brush and then carry out the stoving process.
  • Baking the Petromax cast iron product is an important step to create a natural non-stick coating and extend the life of the product. Depending on the size of your Petromax cast iron product, choose to bake it in the oven with a smoke outlet or outside on the grill.
  • To avoid injuries or accidents during the baking process, always follow the safety instructions.

Attention! Smoke development!

  • Make sure the room is well ventilated, as heating oil can lead to smoke and odors. Open windows or use a fan to ensure that smoke and odors can escape.
  • We recommend baking in an oven with a smoke extractor or alternatively on a barbecue in the garden. Note that baking on a barbecue is similar to baking in the oven, but the exact time and temperature may vary.
  • If your oven is not connected to a smoke outlet, move the baking outside.

NOTE
To strengthen the patina and achieve a better non-stick effect, repeat the baking process if desired. Allow the Petromax cast iron product to cool down completely after baking before touching or cleaning it.
The patina is often not black after baking, but can also look brownish or gray. The important thing is that the patina is not sticky after baking, but feels very smooth. It is therefore essential to follow the stoving process exactly.

5 steps to safe baking in the oven

  1. Cleaning : Remove any labels, residue or dirt from the cast iron product. Clean it thoroughly with hot water and a brush to remove dust, corrosion protection residue or dirt.

  2. Drying : Dry the product completely and allow it to dry for at least 2 hours so that no water residue remains.
    Stoving agent
Use the Petromax care paste, alternatively you can also use oils with a high smoke point from approx. 200 °C for burning in.

  3. Apply stoving agent/grease: Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil or preferably Petromax care paste to the inside of the product. Use an oil with a high smoke point such as rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil (not olive oil or linseed oil). Ideally, apply the oil with a brush or cotton cloth. Wipe off excess fat thoroughly before baking!

NOTE

To achieve an even, non-sticky patina, make sure that only a thin layer of oil remains on the product. If in doubt, remove excess oil and burn the cast-iron product again.

Heat : Place the product upside down on the oven rack in an oven preheated to 200 -250°C. Place a baking tray on the bottom shelf to catch any dripping oil. Keep an eye on the Petromax cast iron product in the oven! A slight amount of smoke may develop during the baking process. This is intentional. When it no longer smokes, the process is complete. The baking time varies depending on the product. Leave the product to bake for at least 30 minutes and watch out for smoke.
Allow to cool: Turn off the oven and allow the product to cool slowly in the oven after baking. Be careful when taking it out as it can be extremely hot and only take it out when it is cool enough to be handled safely.

Safety instructions for outdoor baking

If you want to carry out a stoving process outdoors, safety is the top priority:

  • Select a well-ventilated outdoor area that is not close to highly flammable materials or structures. Avoid excessively windy areas to prevent the fire from getting out of control.
  • Make sure that the surface on which you place the product is stable and fireproof. Use a barbecue, bricks or a sturdy metal stand, for example.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher, fire blanket or other suitable extinguishing agent nearby in case something goes wrong.
  • Keep your distance from the Petromax cast iron product during the baking process and make sure that no children or pets are in the vicinity.
  • Wear heat-resistant gloves and, if necessary, an apron to protect yourself from hot splashes.
  • Be careful when handling hot oil and avoid splashing or spilling the oil.
  • Keep an eye on the product during the baking process and be careful when removing it from the fire or moving it.
  • After baking, the product should cool down completely before you touch or clean it.

5 steps for safe searing on the barbecue (charcoal or gas barbecue):

  1. Preparing the barbecue: Preheat the barbecue to a high temperature. Make sure the grill is clean and there is no residue on the grilling surface.
  2. Prepare the Petromax cast iron product: Clean the product thoroughly and dry it well. Apply a thin layer of oil (rapeseed or pumpkin seed oil) or Petromax Care Paste to the entire inside of the product. Burning in the outer surfaces works in the same way. The outer surface of the Petromax cast iron product must face upwards.
  3. Positioning on the grill: Place the Petromax cast iron product upside down on the grill grate. Make sure that it is stable and level so that the oil is evenly distributed.
  4. Grill and bake: Leave the product on the hot grill for about 30 to 60 minutes. Make sure that the grill is well ventilated, as oil can smoke during searing. If present, close the grill lid to ensure even heat distribution.

Allow to cool down: Switch off the grill and allow the product to cool down slowly. Avoid touching the hot product until it has cooled down to a safe temperature.
