DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT
Padded limb restraints with double-security closure. For bed and stretcher use only.
INTENDED USE
- To protect patients assessed to be at risk of disrupting life-saving treatments (e.g., chronic tube pulling) or in danger of injury to themselves or to others by limiting limb movement in a bed or stretcher.
- Follow your hospital’s restraint policies and procedures that comply with USA CMS guidelines, state laws, or other governing agencies outside the USA.
CONTRAINDICATIONS : None
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
The order of either application or removal of the straps to the bed OR the cuff to the patient is to be determined by the clinician. Use method a. or b. below to attach straps to the frame. Follow these steps to apply the device (repeat steps 1-3 on each side):
- Triangulation process; to restrict the patient’s range of motion: separate the straps and attach them at different points along the frame that move with the patient (Fig. 1) out of the patient’s reach (do not attach to side rail or head/footboard) (Fig. 2).
- To increase the patient’s range of motion: place the straps together and attach to a single point along a part of the frame that moves with the patient, out of the patient’s reach.
- Bring the ends of the strap down through the inside of the side rails so they do not interfere when the side rails are raised. Make sure that the straps are attached to the frame that moves with the patient (Fig. 1) (do not attach to side rail or head/footboard), out of the patient’s reach.
- 2790: Thread the end of the strap over the top, around the frame, at least once, and through the two D-rings. Bring the strap back over the first ring and through the second D-ring (Fig. 3), or attach it with a quick-release tie. To limit unwanted adjustment, tie an overhand knot with the excess strap directly below the D-ring. 2790Q: Thread the end of the strap over the top, around the frame, at least once, and close the quick-release buckle. Listen for a “snapping” sound. Pull firmly on straps to ensure a good connection (Fig. 4). If the buckle does not fit an opening, use the alternate method in Fig. 5 by looping the webbing through the frame opening, inserting the buckle through the loop, and securing the male buckle to the female buckle to secure. Close the quick-release buckle by sliding the male end into the female end (Fig. 4). To limit unwanted adjustment, tie an overhand knot with the excess strap directly below the quick-release buckle.
APPLYING THE CUFFS: (Repeat steps 1-3 for each side)
- Wrap the neoprene piece around the wrist/ankle so the buckle and connecting strap is on the ulnar side of the wrist or lateral malleolus of the ankle. Attach the black hook-and-loop pieces and pull back the black pull tab on the blue fuzzy piece, followed by the blue hook-and-loop pieces. The fuzzy piece should be sandwiched between the two pieces of hook (Fig. 6). Be sure to overlap at least one inch (3 cm).
- Press the hook-and-loop closure together firmly and make sure it adheres securely. Slide ONE finger (flat) between the cuff and the inside of the patient’s wrist/ankle to ensure proper fit (Fig. 7).
- 2790: Pass the end of the limb strap over the top of the cuff and through the two D-rings on the cuff. Bring the strap back over the first ring and through the second D-rings on the cuff. Slide ONE finger (flat) between the cuff and the strap.
2790Q: Close the quick-release buckle on the cuff. Insert ONE finger (flat) under the buckle and pull the strap snugly, but not so tight as to restrict circulation (Fig. 8). Release the quick-release buckle, twist the buckle 180°, and reconnect (Fig. 9). Listen for a “snapping” sound.
POSEY TWICE-AS-TOUGH LIMB HOLDER:
- 2790 D-Ring Cuff (double strap with D-Rings), Regular/Blue
- 2790Q Quick-Release Buckle Cuff (double strap with quick-release buckle), Regular/Blue
ADJUSTING STRAP LENGTH
Adjust the connecting strap(s) length from the frame to allow desired freedom of movement without compromising patient or caregiver safety. To limit unwanted adjustment, tie an overhand knot with the excess strap directly below the quick release buckle and D-ring. Ensure the remaining strap end(s) are secured and out of the reach of the patient.
TO REMOVE: Release the cuff from the patient. Release the anchor strap from the bed frame.
TO LIMIT LOWER LIMB RANGE OF MOTION FOR LEGS (FIG. 10): The clinician applying the strap’s criss-cross application method can determine which is applied first (cuff or strap) and which end of the restraint is criss-crossed.
- Attach the cuff that is secured to the bottom right side of the frame, which moves with the patient, out of the patient’s reach to the left ankle.
- Criss-cross the straps and attach the cuff secured to the bottom left side of the frame, that moves with the patient, out of the patient’s reach to the right ankle.
- Adjust connecting straps as necessary.
PRECAUTIONS
- When used with monitoring lines or if the patient has a wound or dislocated/fractured limb, a clinical assessment and decision are required.
- Check the patient regularly to ensure that circulation is not impaired. Serious injury may occur if the cuffs restrict circulation when the limb holder is applied.
WARNING: Additional or different body or limb restraints may be needed (visit tidiproducts.com):
- Some patients may require additional interventions in conjunction with a restraint to prevent injury to themselves or others.
- If the patient pulls violently against the bed straps.
- To reduce the risk of the patient getting access to the line/wound/tube site.
- To prevent the patient from flailing or bucking up and down and causing self-injury.
- It is a clinical decision to decide when a restraint is no longer deemed safe.
BED SAFETY: Refer to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or other governing agencies outside the USA, for the most recent Hospital Bed Safety Guidelines and the bed manufacturer’s instructions for use.
